Kitchen renovation - suggestions for microwave cooking?
Q. My relative is planning a kitchen renovation for the summer. Most meals will be cooked either on the grill or in a microwave. Can anybody recommend a book on microwave cooking that is GOOD!? I've had a couple of microwave cooking cookbooks in the past, but the results were less than great, so got rid of them. Suggestions welcome. They can't grill when it is raining or windy because it is an unprotected area.

A. We just finished (well almost) a complete kitchen rennovation. We did a lot of the work ourselves so it took a lot longer than we expected. We moved our old regrigerator to the laundry room, and we had an old electric frying pan, an outside grill, a crockpot and a microwave. We eventually bought a toaster oven and a 2 burner butane hotplate. Basically, we cooked about everything that we would normally cook in a real kitchen on those few appliances.

Other than corn and popcorn, I really didn't use my microwave for much except reheating leftovers. I used the crockpot a lot which was quick and easy, but the toaster oven and hotplate were the two things I used the most.

Tell your relative to invest in a toaster oven with temperature controls. We baked everything in there, from baked potatoes to small roasts. Also, tell her to add at least 2 months to any renovation project...it always takes longer than you think it will. Tell her it will all be worth it in the end. I still have a concrete floor, but I LOVE my new kitchen.

Best of luck!!

What is usually the average cost of remodeling a kitchen? I have a small kitchen. ?
Q. My kitchen has enough room for a 2 seated table. I am interested in getting new cabinets above the stove and below the sink. Just getting advice.

A. there is really no average cost. It depends on how many cabinets you order, the quality of the cabinets, how much of the work you do and how much you hire someone else to do. One idea is to check with the kitchen design showrooms or lumber yards in your area to see if they have discontinued displays they are getting rid of...these can be a pretty good deal. Be sure to double check your measurements and maybe bring digital pics of what you have and show someone who knows what they are doing. Good luck!

Can you go to jail for pawning something from buddys home furnishing?

Q. I am wondering if I pawned something that I rented from buddys home furnishing and now the pawnshop sold it. I have been paying them even though, BUT now I am really hard up for money and cannot make the payment. Can they press criminal charges on me for not paying them?

A. Selling Rental Property is a felony and on top of that if you stole it from your friend which you obviously did that also is a felony. You know many people steal and pawn and are hard up for money because they use drugs. Is that an issue-maybe getting clean would help the situation

My friends are moving to a new apartment soon and for X-mas i want to get them a giftcard for home furnishings
Q. They are expecting a new baby and moving to a new apartment and I want to get them a giftcard to a home furnishing store, but I cant think of a good one all of a sudden. Any ideas??

A. Target is great for these occasions and they have online gift cards available too.

Is it better to show an empty house or furnished house when selling a home in an estate?
Q. If furnished, keep in mind that the contents of the home will be that of the deceased. Creepy? Or is it better to have the home furnished and looking "homey"?

A. I like to look at them vacant, but not everyone does.

Remove all personal items, all clutter and keep it simple. Remember that you want people to be able to visualize themselves living there. If they feel like they are intruding on someones home they may not be able to do that.

How can an Interior Decorator get a Designer or Trade Discount?

Q. I am curious if it is possible to get a Designer or Trade Discount from home furnishing stores as an Interior Decorator (not an Interior Designer). Does anyone know if this is possible, and if so- what kind of proof (certificate/professional membership/etc.) must an Interior Decorator show to the stores in order to receive the discount? In general, do most home furnishing stores offer discounts if you are an Interior Decorator versus and Interior Designer? Thanks for any info.

A. You can register at big box stores ( Home Depot, Rona, Lowes etc.) as a contractor, with a business licence and business cards showing proof that you are a designer. Wallcovering, paint, furniture and flooring stores will also do the same if you are an acknowledged professional. Smaller operations will have their own system of passing on discounts, or not, to designers who frequently purchase product from them. They will then subsequent mark it up realistically to their client, as designers do have to earn a living, and the client will still probably benefit by a somewhat discounted product, better than what they would have gotten.
If you are in business, I don't believe the difference between a decorator or a designer effects your discount. Keep in mind though that retailer's are wary of people posing as such to simply get a deal. Hope this helps.

How can i sell goods to the large builders?
Q. HI i work at a Home furnishing manufacturer company and i wanted to see if anyone know how does the building process work and how can i get into the big builders business to sell them my goods.
For example we sell moldings. Is it stupid to approach the builder with my moldings or the architects are the one who i have to tackle?

A. start with construction supply companies. your nearest supplier. give them good prices to stock your materials so they can resell them at a good profit margin is a place to start and build quality rating from there, then others will look to get your products in there supply stores also.

How should I arrange my comforter set so that it looks picture perfect?
Q. I have various comforter sets. I want to acheive a look that makes my bed look like those in home furnishing magazines. Does anyone have any ideas and tips?

A. Don't be afraid to mix and match patterns, as long as colors coordinate with one another.

Buy Euro pillows and shams, along with small pillows in various shapes.

I have a king bed and use king pillows, euro pillows and standard size pillows. I like the contrast of sizes.

Browse websites that sell bedding for inspiration. Also watch and go online and look at HGTV. Lots of inspiration there.

Good luck!

Once a baby is birthed, is it necessary to cut the umbilical cord right away?

Q. I was watching 'I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant' and a woman had her baby on her bedroom floor. She was instructed by the the 911 dispatcher to get a shoe string and cut the umbilical cord.

Would it have been detrimental to the child's health had she waited for the paramedics to arrive so they could do it?

A. Leaving it on for a while will do no harm, some people belive you should leave it until it stops pulsating, so that baby gets all the rest of the nutrients.
When the cord touches the air it starts to dry up.
Baby can breath while still attched to the umbilical cord.

Which part from Insidious was frightning to you or creeped you out?
Q. The part that creeped me out more was when the mom was hearing voices in her babys bedroom from the baby monitor. Then when she gets closer to the stairs a voice screams really loud like " I WANT IT NOW". That really creeped me out. So what about you?:)

A. best movie of my life! its so hard to choose but i would have to say when the demon face was behind the dad, or when that man was walking outside the window near the mom and grabbed her haha!

Best way to change room color without damaging walls?
Q. I want to change my baby blue bedroom to black and orange but I'm 20 and should move out in a couple years and my parents don't want either color on the walls because they are hard to paint over. I was wondering if there was an easy way to change the color without doing anything to the drywall? Are there cheap temporary wall panels I can put up and paint?

A. Sounds like you have bold taste, and it is definitely time to get rid of that baby blue. One option might be to promise to paint the room back to whatever color your parents choose when you leave, but I think you may be happier implementing your bold choices in a different way to create more focus and impact to your design.

Suggest painting the walls a dark or light gray that your parents could approve, and then incorporating the bold black and orange colors in furniture, linens and accessories. If you take a look at the following websites, you can see that the bold colors you love really "pop" against the more neutral, contrasting background.

I noticed that several of these photos have a feature wall, or portion of a feature wall, that is painted orange. You could get the same impact by making a large headboard covered with orange fabric or out of wood, painted orange. Have attached a website with simple ideas for headboards.

Hope this helps!

Should I order home design software or have an architect draw my 3d plans?

Q. My wife and I are building a house this year. We've come up with a rough sketch of what we want. Our architect is going to turn our idea into plans for $3000. I want to see a 3d version of our design. He charges $1000 to add a 3d version of the plans via disc. I can buy the most elite home design software for less than $200 and sell it for almost as much when I'm done. Which should I do? The house we are building is a simple 2000 sq ft ranch with a finished basement.

A. no just order home designs only then it's cool

Q. Something similar to the HGTV Home Design software would be great. I want to be able to design the floor plan and the architecture of the home.

A. Hi there! There are a lot of design software you can download online, but the only ones I know of are those from IKEA, Google (Sketchup), and Alljoinery Solutions. When it comes to kitchen floor plans, living room floor plans, and even home architecture design, these ones are the best, at least based on my own experience.

Can you use ceramic floor tiles for shower walls and around the tub?
Q. I am planning to redo my bathroom and my contractor introduced me to a friend selling floor ceramic tiles. They were telling me that I can also use it for the shower walls. Is this correct? Can I really use ceramic floor tile around the bath tub and shower area?
Isn't there such a thing as impervious tiles, semivitreous tiles that are good for the bath tub? I am just worried that if I use the floor tile that it does not have the right quality in the shower area? I do not want to redo the bathroom again after a few years.

A. Yes you certainly can as long as the tile has a trim pc call a SBN ( surface bull nose) to finish off the edges in a neat and professional way. Other wise you need to treat the edges in a special way that can be ugly or down right hidious (sp?) looking.
Always use a 1/2" backer board recessed into the wall so the dry wall and the backer board is flush, Again to give you a professional look.
I ve done this 100s of times.
Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL

What is the easiest way to go through doorways when laying ceramic floor tile?
Q. What techniques and tools would make it easier to go through doorways when laying ceramic floor tile

A. When installing ceramic tile, great care should be taken when measuring around your doorways. The doorways are the hardest place to apply tiles, as the area has many sizes to take into consideration. Cutting and installing ceramic tile around doorways should not be seen as a daunting task. Before you begin, you will want to first take careful measurements at your doorway.

Once you have the proper measurements, you will then want to cut your tile using a masonry saw. Cut your tiles to fit the measurements of your doorway and lay them in the doorway as you cut them to help you keep track of where each tile should go. you can find some good tile saws in my source site.

What color dining room table should I get for my nook?

Q. My entire kitchen cabinetry is oak wood that is stained a medium-mojagany. In my nook area, I have a ton of cabinetry in there, so I'm thinking if I try to match the table to the cabinets, it may be too much. I was thinking a lighter color table... does anyone have suggestions? It cannot be glass of any sort because we have 5 young kids that will use the table for each meal. Thanks in advance!

A. Go with something painted that coordinates with your kitchen outside of the cabinet color/grain -- cream, blue, green, yellow, red, or black. Or change materials -- get a metal and slate/tile table. Or, mix light and dark wood tones so it breaks up the look, but looks deliberate, not mismatched. Or go ahead and match your cabinets for the top of the table, but have the rest be metal or painted another color.

I have a split level home built in 1986. What changes can I make to update it and increase my resale value?
Q. Upper Level - 1 master with small 3/4 bath; 2 guest bdrms; 1 full bath
Mid Level - front room and kitchen
Lower Level - office; 3/4 bath; and family room with fireplace.

We recently had a new roof and siding put on and plan on landscaping the front for "curb-appeal" in the spring. In the meanwhile, we were hoping to get some ideas on how to spruce up the house DIY style.

Initial thoughts are:
1) Replacing vinyl flooring in all bathrooms with ceramic tile.
2) Refinishing kitchen cabinetry (their all wood)
3) Putting in laminate wood flooring in kitchen.
4) Replacing appliances (they're all probably 10 years old) if there's money left.

Any advice or other suggestions.

A. Kitchen remodel is your best "bang for the buck" people really look at the kitchen when looking for a home a up to date kitchen is your best option!

How do you match hardwood floors to exsisting cabinets?
Q. What would be the best color or type of hardwood flooring or other material to match to existing walnut Kitchen cabinetry?

A. most of the time if the cabinets are dark, then the flooring is light and so on. Basically you want a little contrast between the two so the whole kitchen doesn't disappear into a one tone black hole.

Is it possible to bypass door sensor of a GE Simon Home alarm from the inside?

Q. I originally purchased my GE Simon for home safety. Now, with a 15 year old daughter who has become fond of sneaking out at 2am, itâs become more of a child safety tool. As soon as I set it back up, I caught her trying to bypass the alarm on the front door by sticking a magnet between the piece on the door and the piece on the wall. This did not work, but I am not sure why as its only a magnet inside the plastic piece on the door. Is there any other way she could bypass the alarm?

A. This is not an electronics issue. If your 15 y/o daughter is sneaking out of the house at 2:00AM, you need to be in the child care area asking for help in remedying a problem that started a long time ago. Take your daughter to the doctor for a full physical exam, including drug screen & pregnancy test. Find a family counselor, and drag her there.

What is your favorite weapon of choice for securing your home? I'm about to make a purchase.?
Q. I'm about to purchase a Mossberg 500 Tactical Persuader and a Glock 21 .45 or M&P45. Let me know if there are any better selections for personal and home safety.

A. Moss 500 is excellent with either pistol grip only or fold out stock. Glock in .40 S&W is tops. a S&W M&P .45 is a good choice too.

However, I personally prefer a standard Gov't 1911A1 and for a long arm, nothing makes them think twice like racking back an L1A1.

What kind of gun is not lethal but can stun/immobilise a victim? (specifically i'm thinking of home security)
Q. It is specifically meant for personal and home safety. Should not be lethal - hence free from hassles of licensing but have power to stun or immobilise victims; it should be simple and cost-effective enough to make, preferably on our own; it may use chemicals, minor explosives or electronic devices etc but should not be dangerous to keep it; also handy enough to carry around
It should have a reach of at least 30 meters.

A. The very first thing that you need to think about is your safety and the safety of the others in the house that you live in. That also includes any small children that may get a hold of such a thing. Then why non-lethal? Because you would rather not kill a person, if that is your view I completely respect that, or is it the permit issue? Tazers and other non lethal devices can kill or seriously injure a child as easy as a gun. You will need to think about where to store it, how easy it will be for you to get to it, and how effective it will be. They make guns that shoot rubber bullets, or nets that are very effective, but they cost a lot. The cheapest and most reliable device you could use is a 12 gage shotgun. Typically there is no permit issues because they are primarily used for hunting. You can get them with shorter stocks and barrels so they are easier to maneuver in your home. Remember what ever is dangerous to intruders is dangerous to you. If this device is not strong enough to keep them under control until help comes then you only have an angry, injured, criminal which is not a good thing to have in your house.

How expensive,on average, does it cost to build your own basic home bar?

Q. hey, moving towards a house on campus and want to build a bar at my new place. Just kinda want to know what i'm getting myself into.

A. It really depends....if you go to home depot and buy the materials you can get great materials for 400-500 dollars (small bar)or you can go cheaper. Or you can go really cheap and look over thrift stores and antique malls for an older piece of furniture and re-purpose it for $100-200 dollars. This assumes you have the tools you need to get this done. But a major factor is what you want. Somewhere to store drinks and set them on will be a lot cheaper than your very own "cheers" style bar.

Where is a good place to buy a home bar?
Q. I am looking to buy a bar for my house. Nothing huge just a nice small bar. Few shelves, storage and such. Any ideas where to find one?

A. I work for Durham Bookcases (www.thebookcaseshop.com) and we build various kinds of tables and have built host stands and other furniture for restaurants before.

Depending on the kind of bar you are looking for you could get a table and cut a hole in it for a bar sink and other fixtures. If you want a closed bar, then you could add some panels between the legs to enclose it. As far as shelving, if you could either add a small bookcase or cabinet under the table or have it built into the bar. If we built what i described it would probably be around $360 plus the cost of finishing ($135 for stain $176 for painting), and the sink and other fixtures.

Buying or building a home bar?
Q. I want to install a bar in my new "MAN CAVE" basement. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to buy a nice one? I have just moved to an area about an hour north of Atlanta, GA. Or, if buying is not an option, can someone direct me to a website, book, person, or instructional DVD to help me out?

Thanks

A. Sam's Club and Costco often carry bars that are made like a piece of furniture. You might also check with a local kitchen shop--a bar would probably only require two, maybe three cabinets and a top, and might not be expensive.

What home security system do you recommend?

Q. I am looking in to getting a home security system for my home. What do you all recommend. The only really that I know of is ADT, but I know there are more out there.

What do you recommend?
What do you NOT recommend?
What have your experiences been?

Please help me make a good choice for the safety, security, and peace of mind of my family.

A. My family and I use
LifeShield home security, and it's GREAT!
3 forms of protection, and you can set up video cameras, and activate and deactivate from your mobile device.

you can find the nearest location to get one at:
http://local.lifeshield.com/USA/

Is a cheap home security system really sufficient to prevent a burglary at my apartment?
Q. I don't want NO monitoring fees, AND NO Install fees. I want a DIY alarm, but I don't want the lowes or walmart or home depot home security system. I just want a cheap home security system. Are they really effective?

A. It is said that we get what we pay for. Does this mean that when you buy a cheap home security system, you donât get the right protection you need? And on the same token, does a really high dollar home security system assure you that your home or apartment is already immune to burglary? While the expensive home security systems are nice, let us not disregard common sense when picking out a home security system. Remember, there is just no such thing as total security so no matter how much cash you spend for electronic security devices, the risk is still going to be there. What you should do is to carefully select the security devices you actually need and get the best out of your budget. Several factors should go into your consideration with one main benefit is the DIY factor. You want at the least a DIY home security system that is easy to install. The rest of the story is in the source below.

How to choose home security cameras?
Q. I live in a town that many burglaries have happened lately. I would like to install home security cameras in my house. Does any of you know where I can find some information about this issue?
I'd appreciate any help.
Thank you.

A. Hi,

I had the same problem in my area and was looking for some information about home security cameras. I found a great website which gives tons of information about various types of home security cameras and helped me a lot to buy what I was really needed. The website is http://homesecuritycamerasinfo.com/. This website will give you all the information you need and will help you to find the home security system that you need.

How to remove exterior paint from clothes?

Q. I got exterior paint on some clothes, and I was wondering if there is a way to remove it without damaging (bleaching) the fabric.

A. If it's a water based paint, then soap and water should remove it.
If it's a spirit based paint, then you'll need something like Turpentine (turps) to remove it.

DON'T put them in the washer until the paint is out as the hot water will 'set' the paint.

Good luck

How much does it cost on average to have a 2 story house (exterior) painted?
Q. We just bought a house and need to get the exterior painted. Should we do it ourselves, or hire a professional? It's a basic 2 story house. Not big at all.

A. Hello,
I am a contractor and I might be able to answer this question more acurate. There are a few aspects to determine a price of an exterior job.
1) how big is the home? ( yours though is a small home)
2) How much damage is done to boards( If wooden exterior) and/or paint).
I usually charge somthing between $1000- $3000 depending on the scope of the job.
Some people feel uncomfortable to work on the ladders; If you have worked on the ladders before and feel comfortable you can do it, if not you should look for scaffolding systems. Make sure that you prime and caulk boards property to prevent early water damage/decay to the bords. recently home depot ( BEHR) offers a new product that one coat of it does the job for prime and paint( Two in one).
If you decide to hire a professiional contractor, make sure he or she is licensed and have liablety insurance.
if you have any questions do not hesitate to e-mail me.
Best Regards
Nima

how to get rid of cigarette smell in furniture?
Q. I bought some dining room furniture and the previous owners were smokers. It is glass and wood. I have cleaned all surfaces but everything still smell the smoke. What can I use?. Air freshners, Fabreeze and plug ins just mask the smell. It is still there.

A. You can get rid of the smoke smell with White Vinegar.

Vinegar destroys cigarette smell on a molecular level. It doesn't just cover it up, like air fresheners do. It destroys it.

Pour undiluted White Vinegar into a spritzer bottle and spray the furniture with this.

The vinegar works best at 100% strength.

Yes, vinegar stinks, too, but unlike cigarette smell, it dissipates within hours. And once it does, the cigarette smell will be gone, too. It works every time.

Do my dining room furnitrure have to match the colors of my living room furniture?

Q. My dining room is part of my living room (its a combo). Do u think my dining room furniture has to match the colors of my living room furniture, or can it be a different color scheme?

A. Since it is one room there should be something similar in the design or colours. Example..if you have espresso coloured tables in the livingroom, then a dark or espresso dining set would be nice with the same lines as the livingroom furniture. You can use the same curtains in both ends of the room, or pick up similar colours in art or photos on the wall, or use the same runners on tables..that sort of thing. You can be different, but if you are doing that, then make it a colour for example of the chair upholstry that will match well with the livingroom. Just keep something uniform between the two rooms to unify them.

Any ideas for area rugs in my living and dining rooms, please?
Q. My living and dining rooms are in an open L shape. The walls are pale cream. Dining room furniture is cream lacquer with brass trim. Living room furniture is a cream background with a narrow old rose stripe and a wide delicate leafy floral stripe in pale green/old rose/blue. I have two slate-ish blue chairs. The floors are oak hardwood (I just ripped up cream wall to wall). I need area rugs, but I'm baffled by trying to get something to go with the floral furniture. I thought to get a green in the living room and the same rug but lapis in the dining room. I don't want anything dark, my whole house is airy and light colored. I'm looking at Milliken border rugs. I like the Remington but am afraid it's too severe. I looked at one with an Ionica border, but am not sure about the floral border with my floral furniture even tho they are both delicate. Oriental style is not an option. I have grandsons who are often here so a too light color might not be good. Any help is greatly appreciated.
What I really need is suggestions on patterns.

A. Go into your local carpet store and select a really nice carpet that suits your style. Have them order a large enough piece and have it bound to the exact size you want it.

Then you can get a really nice, well wearing rug and not spend an arm and a leg on it.

A. About a year ago, We painted the laminate sink cabinet & mirror in my bathroom with a red primer, and then a light layer of black on top (done with a foam brush). It looks great, almost like mahogany. Perhaps you could try that technique.

What's the normal length for Window Valance to fit most Windows?

Q. How many do you need to buy in order to cover two windows in your childs bedroom?

A. The size of the valance should be printed on the package. Measure the window and add a couple of inches on each side to find out the minimum size you need. You should only have to buy one per window, unless the windows are inordinately large.
Windows vary a lot in size, so there are several "standard" sizes. If in doubt, buy the larger one and you can bunch it up on the drapery rod.

How long do i keep my turtles lamps on for?

A. I leave the lamp on for 12 hours and off for 12 hours; this simulates day and night.

How tall should bedroom table lamps be?
Q. I have great table lamps in the livingroom which is in the process of being redone. Would the lamps be too tall for the bedroom? Is there a formula of height requirements for table lamps? For a swag over the kitchen table, what is the clearance?

A. The lamps are not required to be any height...just make sure they are proportioned correctly with your bed post...lamps that are seen as too tall are normally those that are taller than the bed posts!

how best can I use floor lamps to light living room and bedroom with no ceiling lamp?
Q. I am moving into an older apartment and there are no ceiling lamps in the bedroom and living room. I bought a floor lamp from Walmart and 75W 'daylight' energy saving bulb from Home Depot. I find the lighting dull and not good enough to read with-I'm a student. This is really bothering me, how best can I light the rooms using lamps and have adequate light in them? I want them well illuminated and don't want to ruin my eyes either.

A. I had the same problem with lighting.
I ended up putting a big floor lamp in one corner and little lamps in the other corners on my dresser and night table.

How can i get home building materials at builders cost?

Q. all home building supplies at the best price and home blueprint

A. The idea of material suppliers giving wholesale or discounted prices has to do with perceived volume of business. If you are building a house, take the total material list to a couple of lumber yards for a bid on the total package. Most of the time, a lumber yard will bid a complete house material package at or near the wholesale price. Builders who buy half a million dollars a year from a lumber yard are going to get the best prices and likely have an assigned salesman to cater to him. Having an apartment building or a contractor's license is not going to give someone the right to demand any significant discount. If you are a high volume buyer with the money to pay, that will the only credential you will need for the best service and the best prices from any business you walk into.

If you are just wanting wholesale prices on small quantity odds and ends, your best bet is to go to a place like Home Depot. I have found the level of service at Home Depot to be in line with the volume of my business there, which is minimal.

Where to begin the custom-home building process?
Q. Can someone point me to a good consumer-oriented website or offer advice on the steps toward getting a custom home built? My wife and I have a couple lots in mind, we're narrowing down a list of floor plans. We could use some guidance as far what tasks â and in what order â we should be planning for.

A. the process is going to be different for different areas. i would recommend going to amazon.com and buying a few books on how to be your own general contractor, and how to build your own home. (i have i think is called "building your own home on a shoe string") some go into more detail than others. but read a few and get aquainted with some of the terms and such. they will also go through the steps.
but here are the basic steps.
1) find /buy land. make sure it meets all of your requirements, and the local requirements for building. consider a perk test, septic planning, access roads, frontage, any minimum size requirements.
2) site planning. where is the septic located (or are you on town sewer and water). where is the house going, where is the well going (if not on town water) where is the electric going to come in from. and which way will the house be oriented (stake out the corners)
3) excavation and foundation (this will go off the plans that you have decided on) (be prepared for the unexpected, who knows what they will find when they dig)
4) framing
5) skinning (roof and exterior walls and maybe siding, windows) inside is now protected from the elements)
6) electric, plumbing, hvac
7) insulating
8) interior walls, floors, ceilings
9) appliances, painting, finish electrical and plubing fixtures.
10) final walkthrough, cleanup, touchup.

those are the basics

Info on learning how to make wall decor signs with lettering?
Q. I would like to learn how to make those wall decor signs that always have some quote, phrase, name or word on it. For example I have seen some that say "cafe" or "this is where our story begins". Does anyone know if there are places that have classes for this or a book or magazine that teaches you how?

A. I think you need special machines for that. They arent that expensive and I know of a company that can customize what you want and at fairly cheap. You should email them. I had a friend who put cool quotes throughout the ceiling with their vinyls... looked great.

What color accents works well in a bedroom with turquoise and brown walls?

Q. What kind of accents, furniture, etc. will work well with the color of my bedroom walls? They are a turquoise/aqua and brown color, but i'm not sure what color accents to use - i was thinking of something like black picture frames for a modern look, or funky white lamps. Any ideas?

A. usually natural colors and black and white look good with those colors

Hardwood floor, lavender colored walls, and white accent furniture?
Q. I'm making my room right now and the room has dark mahogany color floor, and I added white accent furniture and my walls are a light lavender. I am given the option of getting a carpet put in or leaving it as it is. Should I leave it as it is, only based on the looks! Not the difficult maintenance of the hardwood floor, I've lived with those types of floors my whole life I know how to maintain them! Thanks(:

A. I think you should leave it as it is. You can always put area rugs down if you want too, and hardwood floors (in my opinion) give the room more character. Plus, I think it will look really good with the mixed wood colors! Good luck, and I really like the wall color you're thinking of by the way. (:

Not Registerting and asking for gift certficiates at a house warmong party?
Q. I am having a house warming party at the end of January and all of my friends are telling me to register for gifts. I pretty much have a handful of kitchen appliances and really only need big stuff like bedroom furniture and accent furniture. I really dont want to enforce gift giving at my party but I feel like I should. I honestly would just rather recieve gift certficates rather than picture frames and 5 of the same kitchen appliances. I know that is tacky to talk about gifts in an invitation but how can I go about it the right way? HELP!!

A. Etiquette dictates that YOU do not ask for gifts in an invitation. Tell your friends if someone asks them what to get you that a G.C. at certain stores would be great. Otherwise, you get what you get, or don't get for that matter.

What paint colour will look best with my livingroom furniture?

Q. I am trying to decide what color to paint my livingroom. I have a black leather couch & love seat, dark walnut floors and teak coffee table. What paint colors will compliments my furniture and floors?

A. I'd like to give you a different idea. On one of the walls in your living room, place a mirror with a kind of designed grill in front like in this picture - http://www.luxuryfurnitureandlighting.com/furniture_images/living/deco/Y02%20sofa-1.jpg

Or paint the walls a light grey colour. see this - http://www.3dm3.com/forum/attachments/f48/14067d1200848748-living-room-interieur.jpg

Since you have dark colour in you living room, try to balance it by painting the walls a very faint yellow or off-white. Or one main red wall and the rest beige colour could also work. You decide. :)

Bad smell from new furniture in nursery-how do i get it out?
Q. About 2 months ago my husband and i bought a crib and dresser combo for our baby who is due in about 2 weeks. Got it home and out of the boxes and it smells bad. I cant explain the smell. It doesnt smell like hard wood, its more like a chemical-ish odor from the finish or laquer it has on it. It's making all of his cloths in his dresser small the same way. It's really annoying to me. I feel like ill be putting him in a room full of fumes. Anyone have any idea HOW i can get rid of the smell naturally? I have heard of taking it out in the sun everyday over long period of time to let it breath out and get the fumes out but is that the only way. I dont have alot of time really.
By the way, this isnt a smell that would be easily covered up. Its not one of those- dog pissed on the carpet type of thing- and its hard wood so if i spray something like air freshener it doesnt work.. but thanks

A. I would open the windows in the nursery to air it out. Point an oscillating fan on them as well w/the drawers open (remove the clothes so they don't absorb the scent-give them a wash if they don't air out on their own in a few days). If you have a ceiling fan, turn that on too. The air circulation will help get the smell out quicker than anything else. If you are running your air condition, close the door to keep it out of the rest of your home. This isn't exactly energy efficient, but it's the easiest. The 12 week waiting period for a new crib won't be helpful to because the new one will have similar issues, unless you get a wrought iron crib-but those have their own issues (significant cost, danger of getting hurt on bars, etc).

Volatile compounds (VOCs) used in staining products tend to take longer to dry/cure especially when they are in oil based products. (Also why people shouldn't use oil based paints to paint interior spaces if they are sensitive to smells.)

I assume that you have allowed the mattress to air out also. Most mattresses have a smell to them as well. This also goes for newly installed carpets.

If you plan on using a bassinet/pack-n-play w/included bassinet then, I suggest using that (not in the childs room) in the interim. Your momma super smeller is working, which is a good thing in this case. When you can no longer smell the "new" smell, it will be safe to put baby in the crib.

Congratulations! I hope you have an easy delivery with your son. Btw, I found out w/mine that when they say "bouncing baby boy", they mean when he gets old enough to start bouncing on furniture or whenever they get excited about something :-)

How do you keep your home smelling good?
Q. I am always going into homes where everything smells so fresh and even sweet, what do you use to keep your home and linen smelling so good and long lasting?

A. Dryer sheets, lysol, and carpet powder are your best friends. Potpourri and candles do good to mask the smell, but that's not what you want. It's artificial. It's nice for a scent, but it's not a clean smell, really.

After cleaning, sprinkle some scented carpet powder on the floor and let it set for a couple of minutes, then vacuum it up. The scent remaining is very faint and fresh. Put a dryer sheet between your linen to keep them fresh smelling. You can also stick a bar of soap or dryer sheet in your closets to keep them fresh smelling. You can even rub a dryer sheet over your furniture (test it first) to give a nice scent AND reduce any static cling. Dryer sheets also clean and de-static-ify (LOL) tv and computer screens. AAAANNNDDD you can put a dryer sheet wedged or taped into an air conditioning vent in every room to spread the fresh scent around. No one will even know it's there.

What is the best outdoor lighting system to protect your house from burglars and crime?

Q. How have you set up your outdoor lighting system? Including the garage lights and the lights you might have in your flower beds which "spotlight" your house. Any tips would be helpful as there is an increase in burglaries and car thefts in my area (our cars have been broken into 2x in our driveway). Please HELP!
P.S. We have car alarms but the thieves are pretty clever here, no alarms ever go off when cars are broken into. I don't know how they do it, our cars are always locked & alarms off.
P.S. We have car alarms but the thieves are pretty clever here, no alarms ever go off when cars are broken into. I don't know how they do it, our cars are always locked & alarms on

A. I have a motion activated light by my back garage door. I installed lights on top of my patio cover that I can turn on if someone is on the hillside above my home. I have landscape lights in front, back and both sides. I use the spot lights to highlight recessed corners and the fence. I made it look like the spotlights on the fence are highlighting some decorative items I hung on it, but it is really so that burglars know they cannot get over the fence without being seen. I also keep the trees and bushes pruned under the height of the windows so that they do not provide an obscurity that criminals could use to enter. A very bright motion detecting light above the garage door not only gives visitors light to get up to the front entry, but discourages criminals from messing with cars in the drive. Finally, I replaced the fixtures the builder provided at the front entry because they could not accomodate a bright enough bulb to illuminate the entire front walk and porch.

Inside my home, I have lights on timers in several rooms so that it always looks like someone is home somewhere in the house. I set them to go off at different times so it also looks like there is more than one person home, but randomly enough that there is no regular schedule. I also make certain that neither mine, nor my neighbors, newspapers, ad circulars or any other stuff, accumulates so that no one knows when any of us are out of town. We rarely leave our garage doors open, even when we are mowing the lawn. We've had a lot of petty theft of tools, CDs out of cars, stored items in garages, in broad daylight. I think theives scope out the garages, pick out what they are after, get in and out in a flash.

What is the best time of day for outdoor lighting pictures in the summer?
Q. A friend requested I take pictures of her baby. She wants outdoor lighting, and I tend to favor it as well. What time of day has the best lighting for these types of pictures? I know the sun shouldn't be too high in the sky so it doesn't cast heavy shadows.

The sun rises around 6 AM and sets around 8 PM.

A. It's best to start early in the morning. Say around 7am. Because at this time light is rather soft and not too strong. And it doesn't create nasty shadows like the midday sun does.

Plus, the morning sun won't be too harsh on the baby.

Do they make a conducting gel or compound to put in my loose outdoor lighting sockets?
Q. I have Malibu outdoor lighting with pinch type pieces of metal that hold on to the little bulbs. I've tried pinching the 2 pieces closer, but this works for about a day before it loosens and the light goes out. Is there any type of product that conducts electricity I can put in this socket to make the connection more stable?

A. Yes go to your local electrician and ask for nolox. This is used to stop corrosion caused by the outside elements and the corosive effects of copper on aluminum. This will help a little with the warping effects of heat. If that doesnt work get a refund.

Where can I get fairly good living room furniture, for a good price?
Q. hey im 20 and getting ready to move out of moms for not twice but the THIRD time ;p anways this time im living on my own without roomates, we rented really nice leather furniture last time.....but this time i dont want to go down that route again, where can i get GOOD cheap living room furniture/tv stands etc.?

A. You are going to get your best furniture for the money second-hand.

I used to sell new furniture and I was surprised to find the $3000.00 bedroom sets I was selling were attractive veneer over pressed wood. (A corner chipped from the footboard of the bed and exposed the pressed wood.)

I used to be in the antiques and collectibles biz and your best furniture for the money will be from the 1950's and before. It will be solid wood. The dresser drawers will have solid wood sides, backs, and bottoms. The back of the piece will often be wood, also. They may even have dovetailed construction attaching the sides of the drawers to the front of the drawer. Check out drawers nowadays. The sides and back are not wood, and neither is the back of the piece. They use this cardboardish stuff a lot of the time.

The dining tables will be solid wood, as will the cocktail and end tables. Find a piece with the shape or design you like. You can always spray paint it and/or change out the hardware. One or both of those two steps can completely transform a piece.

I had an incredibly unattractive chest of drawers once-they were in brown and yellow. I was going to get rid of it but before I did that, I examined it. It was superbly constructed-I just hadn't paid much attention to it because I had found it at a great price and bought it for resale. I re-did it for a child in my family in blue and white with pewter looking Winnie the Pooh hardware (knobs). It looked great.

You can get armoires from the 1940's that are sturdy and can be used for your TV and other electronics. (Make sure the sides and back can support the strong shelving you need.) Since they are not that old or valuable you don't have to feel badly about drilling holes in the back (for the cords) or installing shelves. Dealers order this furniture from England in big shipping cartons. Find someone who does that-you can probably get the piece for $150 or less. You can change out the piece later and install bookshelves or as a hanging closet (it's original use) if you choose to.

Another TV stand option is a sofa table, cocktail table, or chest of drawers. The drawers can be used to store music and DVDs. You can paint it a flat black and put silver or pewter hardware on the drawers for a contemporary look. You can even put a piece of clear glass or mirror on top for more sparkle.

Thrift stores, garage sales, consignment shops and even the curb (you can't believe what I have found on people's curbs that they were discarding) are all good furniture options. Think outside the box, look at the lines of the furniture and what it can be, not what it currently looks like. (That's what paint is for). Avoid cheap furniture-anything of pressed wood or with pseudo wood grain on it.

Note: There are some specific techniques to spray painting:
1-Initially shake the can upside-down for three minutes. I know it is boring but it makes a difference.
2-Do not try to cover the piece in the first coat. Each coat must be light. The first coat will leave much of the original finish showing. Count on at least three coats. Four if it is a surface that will get handled or used a lot. Shake often. If you get impatient and coat it too heavily, it will run. Not attractive and easily avoided with care and patience.
3-Unless it is a small, inexpensive, decorative piece that will rarely get handled, don't buy the cheapest spray paint at $1.00 per can. There is a quality difference. The more expensive paints have more pigment and cover better.

Good luck with your new place.
You'll have more success if you don't worry about furnishing it instantly and take your time looking. Great things will pop up if you are patient.
It does not have to be done in one week or even a month.

If your room seems empty as you are looking for furniture, add a couple of large trees or plants to the space. Tell people you are going for the minimalist look :)

What are some questions I can ask about in home enviromental safety?

Q. I'm doing a video project for my mass media class. I will be intereview people and asking them questions. I need 2 more questions to ask concering about in home enviromental safety? can someone help me out please?

A. Is the house ventilated? This could be a clue for Carbon monoxide poisoning.
Do you notice any strange smells when you've been gone for a few days? Could be mold.
What kind of cleaners do you use? Some are quite toxic or caustic.
When was the house built? Older homes may have asbestos insulation or lead based paints.
Do you have pets or children? Both can leave little messes if they have accidents.

Would you recommend installing a home security in Wildwood, NJ?
Q. I am buying a house and it had not long ago back door glass broken as nobody lived there for a while. Is it exception or the rule that empty houses are often robbed? Would you recommend to install a home safety system? I mean it is good to have one, but DO I REALLY HAVE TO HAVE IT THERE?
Location - WW close to North Wildwood, between Park and New Jersey. Thank you.

A. Maybe, but I've vacationed at Wildwood for numerous summers and it seems like it's a fine place to be safe, although it is busy and crowded so maybe.
Wildwood is the best! Can I live with you? ;]

Do most youngsters get adequate guidance and discipline training from their parents?
Q. Esp on home-safety, fire-safety, vehicle-safety and other aspects of safety? Isn't this the right time for more family bonding and to nurture kids properly, for a better tomorrow?

Your valuable comments would be much appreciated!

A. From where I am, parents teach, guide and discipline youngsters on the basics of safety, good behavior and manners. We don't even spare the rod, so to speak, if a child does wrong. But we explain to him why he is being spanked - not because we love him less but because we want to instill in his young mind the importance of knowing what is right and what is wrong, that there are certain rules to consider and must be obeyed to make him a better person when he grows up and that includes thinking not only for his own self but to consider others as well.

how do can i repair a deep scratch in my hardwood floor?

Q. we recently moved some furniture and scratched a long gouge in the hardwood floors right in the middle of living room. the floor finish is varathane. can i do a touch up job over the existing finish and if so, how do i do that or will i have to sand down the entire area and refinish the entire room?

are there any good quick fixes to this type of problem?

A. A quick fix is wood putty and sand paper, then use an Old English that matches the wood.

Can anyone estimate how much it costs to finish an attic? About 1200 sq ft.?
Q. The attic is unfinished, not fully insulated, unwired, unventilated... but quite large - with floor finished covered. A couple of windows, maybe 8 feet in the center, but fairly steep roof with rafters. Decent staircase up - but would also need a spiral or other additional staircase. Bathroom upstairs would be bonus, but not required. Any estimates? Anyone have anything similar done?

A. with wiring, insulating, ventilation, finishing windows and trim, hanging sheetrock and finishing drywall and painting, and carpet you are probably looking at twenty thousand or so.

How can I get paint off of hardwood floors?
Q. We had a friend paint our house and now I have paint specs (like overspray) all over my newly refinished hardwood floors. How can remove the paint withour harming the floors finish?

A. First of all, do not use goof-off on your hardwoods, it will void the warranty and it smells. Secondly, water is the only thing necessary to remove latex based paint. Use a soft cloth and your fingernail. DO NOT use a butter knife or other implement which may scratch the floor. Be sure to dry the floor completely when finished.

What is a fair price for marble tile floor installation?

Q. I need to install marble flooring throughout the house, and I was wondering, what is the fair price per square feet for tile installation?

I already have the marble, so the installer just needs to provide the underlayment, thinset, and floor leveling.

Also, the tile would need to be installed in 45 degree angles, instead of straight rows.

Thanks!

A. For marble labor , floor prep ( unknown because it varies a lot with marble) your looking at 5.00$ a s/f and up.
The proper way to prep for marble is a mud job which gives the absolute best support for marble and will also provide ( when done properly) a flat level floor. That alone can go for 2.00$ a s/f and up depending where you live.
In the real world your looking at closer to 10$ a s/f ( and up)with the prep.
Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL

Starting a tile installation company?
Q. I want to start installing tile, and I am familiar with the process, but I have no "real" experience except for the DIY (peel and stick) tile. If I got a tile installation book and practiced on a few tiles on a small scale, how hard would it be to tile a floor good enough to get a positive referral from it?

A. I did a 20 x 18 foot room with 12 inch ceramic tiles. It was a snap really. I used a wide grout line because these were mexican tile. No spacers, just did it by eye.

Plan it so that you dont have "sliver" size peices on any wall , if possible. Rent a wet saw. Or buy one for $89, it will get you through the job.

Now if you are talking tiling a shopping mall thats something different. I have looked at some of that work , and man, those lines are straight for miles. But for homes, you will never see the errors after a week.

Cost of Ceramic tile installation?
Q. How much per sq foot should ceramic tile installation cost? I would like to get my kitchen and connected bathroom (260 sqft) done. I plan on spending 2 per sq ft on the actual tile.

A. Contact a ceramic tile installer or go to a showroom which sells ceramic, They will tell you the cost of material and the cost of installation. You can determine if you DIY.

describe how mature boulevard trees add curb appeal to residential neighborhoods?

Q. how do they work together with old homes and architecture to make a neighborhood 'appealing' to a homebuyer?

A. A large percentage of home buyers decide whether or not to look inside a house or take it seriously based on its curb appealâthe view they see when they drive by or arrive for a showing.
Trees add value to a home as well as being essential to a healthy community. The well-placed tree can:
Cut utility costs in half
Protect a home from wind
Cause people to spend more time outside
Act as a sound barrier/buffer
Add dimension to a home's landscape
Contribute to a lower rate of neighborhood crime,it's actually been proven that adding trees to a streetscape lowers crime!

Also, trees in front of an older home evoke a snese of nostalgia...summer days spent playing, the lemonade stand you were sure was going to make enough to buy that bike. They give a sense of the amount of time the house has been there, and the family that must have grown there. People want to feel that the home they are buying has a history, that it has been lived and loved in. Trees do this.

does nurse practitioner make good money in MA so afford a big house?
Q. ive always loved homes and architecture. i wish to become a either a doctor or nurse practitioner and i was wondering if a nurse practitioner in boston or MA in general make good money to afford a big house like 4 rooms , 3,200- 3,500 sq ft with a pool ?

A. A good friend of mine is a nurse practitioner. She makes close to doctor pay, and has a large staff of nurses under her. We are in CA, but her income is about 300k a year. I would think it is close to that in Boston, but of course it depends on the practice. My friend is in private practice...which Obama is trying to make illegal.

Looking for contemporary log home interior pics?

Q. My husband and I were looking to build a log home, but only if we can have a somewhat modern/contemporary look for the interior. Neither one of us are really into the primitive or Americana decor, but we do like the look of the lighter log home interiors like this one:

Can you help me identify and locate an old home interior picture?
Q. I can remember almost 30 years ago my mother bought me a home interior picture that was in a very heavy metal frame with a rounded glass, the print was a small boy kneeling and praying into a beam shining down on him.
I know that I have seen the picture in some bibles and I would like to know the name of the print. I would also know how I might be able to buy the picture, frame, glass etc. that was purchased for me. I have tried the homeco and the home int. web site but without the name of the print I'm having no luck.

A. http://www.sonyaharrisgiftsandcollectibles.com/images/tn_Boy_Praying.jpg

is that the picture? You may also want to go to art.com and search praying

Finding out how much home interior is worth?
Q. I have some 70's era home interior and need to see if it is worth anything. I can't find anywhere to figure that out.

A. Look around your local antique dealers....many are dealing in the retro items now..ask them..it will give you a start, then you can price the piece accordingly if you wish to sell them. You can also google searches for items similar to what you have to see what people are asking for them. Just remember, you can ask what you want, but you might not get it, so there can be a large variance in the prices you see...take the middle ground to be safe.

What's your best money saving tips?

Q. As a SAHM and just in general a frugal person, I am always looking for tips to save money. I will share a few of mine too. Here are my favorite money saving tips

Use a crock pot, it takes less money to run than your oves, saves tons of time, food turns out great, and it doesn't heat the house.

Use a Toaster oven. When I'm not cooking in the crock pot I'm cooking in my toaster oven. I bought one big enough to bake pies, bread, cake in square cake pan, cookies, chicken, steaks, etc..... I bought a regular toaster for making toast. I feel making toast in a large toaster oven is a waste of electricity.

Buy used when possible. I bought my sons loft bed for $150 the same exact bed sales for $1000 at our local kids furniture store. I bought his power wheels 2 seater jeep for $30. and I bought a Quadra Fire gas insert for $250, we were looking at the same one at a local store for $2500. These are just a few bargains I have found.

A. So many tips, so little room! I save plastic bowls from cottage cheese, yogurt, cream cheese, etc. They are great for organizing small items like nails and screws, or can be used when painting. Same for coffee cans. I save my daily newspapers and then wet them and roll into logs that I use in my fireplace in the winter. Freecycle is another great thing! I also clean and reuse plastic water bottles. I save my large plastic bottles for my greenhouse though. I will fill them with water, paint them with black spray paint and use them as a heat sink when the weather gets cold and my greenhouse needs warmth. When it warms up and the bottles are not needed, I use the water from the bottles to water my plants. Right now, I'm saving the caps from beer bottles to make a cool art project outside! It's my sister's idea! I mostly shop at thrift stores or consignment stores for clothing, and yes, I do hang my clothes outside on a clothesline!

How to make my bedrrom more like a teen bedroom!?
Q. Hi everyone! So im 14 and I want to make my room alot more like a teen bedroom, but i dont mean like posters of bands and all that stuff, i want like bright colors and cool stuff like that, somewhere where me and my friends can just hang out, right now my room is soo broing, the walls are a light pale purple white yellowish-white carpet and white furniture and my bed doesnt have a headboard, it has one of those white net-canopy things, I;v tried re arranging the furniture and everythign but it still doesnt work. Is there any way I could make a huge difference without having to paint the walls or buy a bunch of new stuff, I can buy some new stuff just not paint and new bed sets and stuff. Anyway, any help would be appreciated, Thanks! And by the way if anybody knows any sites with good tips for teen bedrooms that would help alot too! Thanks!By the way, my room isnt very big and the furniture is pretty outdated.

A. Don't worry, Mine is the same way...only i'm redoing everything.
Why can't you paint it? New paint is one of the best ways to make a room cool-looking.
I'll share what i'm doing, and you can take any ideas that could work for you :)
I'm painting my walls, three grey ones and a silver one. Taking out my carpet and putting in that wood stuff. I'm also getting plants, like bonsais and cool little ones for my desk. I'm getting a navy bedspread and navy curtains with lime green beads. Stereo, and pictures of all my friends and pets and family in cute picture frames, and all my old Tshirts that either got holes or too big/small I'm turning into pillows, in addition to buying some new pillows. lamps are also a great way of lighting up a place and making it look cool. I also need to get a cute little chest for my dog's toys.
Good Luck ffrom a fellow 14 year old! :)

How do I paint on textured walls and create a cute teen bedroom?
Q. I want a cute teen bedroom but my walls are all textured and its really hard to paint on them! I wanted to stripe my walls, but idk how to get a clean line. Also if anyone has any cute color ideas. thanks!

A. Have your mom or dad help you use a laser level and put up painters tape where you want the stripes. Usually it looks better to have them horizontal, rather than vertical.

As far as colors, it depends what theme you want in your room!

Beachy theme: go for a greyish/muted blue
Tuscan/Italy: A rich apricot color
Mexican/Siesta: Rich golden yellow or bold green

You can do whatever your favorite color is! Because your wall is textured it will take multiple coats, unless you want a more weathered look, then you can do a quick fast coat on the taped off area.

Good luck!

How to letter on ceramic tiles?

Q. Our calligraphy guild would like to letter on ceramic tiles. What kind of paint should we use? What kind of sealer? We'd also like to do some kind of photo transfer process. Can we layer the two on the tile without it smearing? Should we seal with plain ol' polyurethane or use epoxy resin? Thanks!

A. Here are some good instructions

How long do ceramic tiles take to dry after washing?
Q. I heard that ceramic tiles absorb water and we have ceramic tile in the downstairs bedroom. After I wash the tile floor how long do I wait until I can move our dressers and furniture back on the tile? Because once I bring in the dressers I don't think the tiles will have a chance to dry because it is fully covered by the dressers, right?

A. Natural tile that is not sealed can take up to 24 hours to dry. I recently re sealed my tile floors, and had this same question. I called a few contractors, and asked some questions. If you are not putting down some type of sealer or something that requires it to be EXTREMELY dry, a few hours, or overnight is fine. If you want to speed up drying time, turn up the heat in the house, and put a box fan in the room to circulate air. Also, is there airflow under the dressers (do they have legs?). If so, you won't run into as many issues. Here's an article on sealing floors that has some cleaning info. too. Good luck!

Installing ceramic tiles on wood floors, what adhesive would I use?
Q. I am putting ceramic tiles on wood floors, what should I use to keep them in place Thank you Barbara

A. I don't recommend installing ceramic tile directly to a wood floor. Wood expands and contracts a lot more than tile thus resulting in cracks in the grout lines, tiles coming loose etc. You should install a 5/16" tile backerboard first and use a flexbond thinset to install the tile.

How do I wire a new ceiling light and switch?

Q. I have a switch that goes to an outlet. I want to add a ceiling light and install a second switch next to the outlet switch. I'm pretty handy? Any helpful tips on the process?

A. get a bigger switch box if the current one is a 1 gang. switch to a 2 gang new work(remodel) box. you will then have to fish wire to the attic going from switch box to ceiling, through attic, and then to the hole where you will put the light. use a new work box (octagon or round) for the light or if the light is over 15 pounds, get a fan box. after that, just wire everything. you should be able to feed off the switched outlet's switch. remember to pigtail when necessary.

~~a holesaw is an easy way for cutting a hole for the light. make sure to use a studfinder before you drill.

How do I add ceiling lights in my house?
Q. Hello everyone. I had a question about ceiling lights. My living room definitely needs more light and I don't really want to have lamps or halogen lamps everywhere. I'd rather have a clean look with ceiling lights. However, I've never done this before. Someone told me that I would need to make sure that the house was prewired for that. Does anyone have experience with this? Where would I have to go to get this kind of work done? The house was built in 2001. Thank you

A. From your description I believe you're wanting recessed lighting and your house doesn't have to be prewired for it, though you will need to add the correct circuit(s) and wire to incorporate it. I incorporate it into just about every project I do and the key to achieving great aesthetics with it is using the correct size lighting and lighting balance. Where you place this lighting, types, and wattages is key to this balance.

Now, if you're not experienced in lighting or wiring I suggest you hire a professional to work with you on achieving the look and effects you want and this can be successfully incorporated into any decor, contemporary or more traditional.

If you contact me directly I may know someone in your area that can help you. What I can tell you is you need to budget approximately $200.00 per light which includes the light and installation. This is inclusive of ALL work, wiring, drywall/plaster, and painting, if the paint can be successfuly matched; if not, plan on an additional $350.00 to repaint the entire ceiling.

How do I get the bottom electrical outlet to supply power when the ceiling light switch is off?
Q. The bottom outlets in my bedroom supply power only when I have the light switch (that controls the ceiling lights) on. Is there a simple way for me to change this so the bottom outlets are always on? Thanks!

A. The room was probably originally wired that way, where the switch controls the bottom halves of the outlets. That is a good feature, and I would leave it that way. There was no fixture in the ceiling originally; someone else installed it. Now, what they did wrong was wire the fixture to the same switch as the outlets. Here's what you do to solve it:

Take all the wiring apart inside the switch box, and remove it by cutting the side brackets or nails with a reciprocating saw. Remove the box, and cut the hole larger, in order to fit a 2-gang box. In fact, if you have a ceiling fan, make it a 3-gang box. You will want an extra place to hold a fan speed control, to avoid having to use any pull-chains on your fan. Re-wire the new switch box, putting the grounds together, and the neutrals together, each with a wire nut. Take the always-hot wires, and add one pigtail per switch. Cap with wirenut. Attach each pigtail to a switch, then connect each switch wire to the appropriate switch. Everything will be switched separately then.

Where to buy living room furniture on budget?
Q. I am going to medical school and am buying my first condo. I have saved substantially for this moment, but I am by no means rich. I will be renting out a room in the condo to pay the billls. The point is, I don't have a lot of money. Where can I buy living room furniture on a budget? I've tried rooms-to-go. Any other suggestions??

A. Ikea often has very cheap but good and fashionable furniture. You could also try a local Salvation Army thrift store or one run by a similar charity.

Certain pieces can be got on the cheap from places like Target - they may not sell couches and armchairs, but they have cheap and durable coffee tables, shelves and TV stands.

I'd also suggest yard sales and a local classified ad section, and asking friends if they have any furniture to get rid of. Look also for estate sales.
