Q. I am having a dust up with a home painting contractor. I told him I wanted the place that's going to be painted cleaned and stripped before he applies the new paint. He said if I wanted that done, I'd have to do it myself, otherwise he just paints over the area "as is." The contract doesn't mention anything about the prepping. In High School: How important to the student is a decorated class room and visually enhanced bulletin boards?

Q. B. If I don't have time to devote to room decorating or bulletin boards how will the lack of, effect the students?

C. What is your opinion of how the student feels about a decorated room or bulletin boards?

D. What does a student take from the visual stimulation of a decorated classroom?

A. Let the students decorate the classroom and bulletin boards. It is a great creative outlet for the students and eliminates you having to come up with something. You just have to set the ground rules!
A classroom that is well decorated does have a more positive effect on the students. The next time you are returning to your home, pause at the door, open it, step in and look around the room. Is everything neat or a mess? How does that make you feel? How would you feel if it was different? The students react the same way when they enter a classroom only it is not always conscious. Why do you think kids put posters and pictures up in their own rooms? They are visually stimulating, make a statement, and gives a sense of belonging. In the classroom it is pretty much the same but it also adds a sense of ownership and pride.

What are engineering challenges to develop solar energy for comfort/home uses?

Q. What are engineering challenges to develop solar energy for comfort/home uses?

A. Solar is an old technology now and is fairly developed. Cost is a bit of a barrier but that is coming down quickly. Production scale could also be considered a barrier, as the industry can't yet make enough solar panels to satisfy demand. The panels themselves are limited in how much energy they can take out of the sun's rays, but they are getting better at this. Materials are a big thing now, mostly in trying out different materials and structures in the cells to bring down the cost and boost the efficiency.
I came accross a new, proven and tested home made wind power system and solar power system which eliminates our electricity bills. It was written by a Renewable energy enthusiasts Michael Harvey the diy called Earth4energy. You can get your copy to save energy and help environment while eliminating your power bills. how do I find manufacturers for designs of home decor?

Q. I design jewelry and ceramics and recycle items into useful but decorative home decor items. I just don't know how to find manufacturers of home decor that would buy my designs or how to submit them.
Can anyone out there clue me in on how to do this?

A. interior design magazine would be a good resource, especially the annual buying/ merchandise guide, as it has the vendors broken down by category, incl. home decor. This or any other magazine aimed at the trade would be a better bet than, say, magazines aimed at homeowners, because trade pubs will have more manufacturers and fewer distributors. Good luck!

What is a good sewing book for beginners who want to make clothing, not home decor?
Q. I have next to no experience sewing so i am looking for a beginner's book. But most of them are focused on making home decor which im not into. Looking to make my own clothing.

A. Reader's Digest Complete Book of Sewing is recommended by many fashion schools for prospective students. It covers almost everything you need to know. Tim Gunn of Parson's and Project Runway says everyone should have a copy. The older book is better than the newer editions, whatever edition you choose it is considered one of the classics: http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Guide-Sewing-Readers-Digest/dp/B000CQ2THY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1266502826&sr=8-2

For a book with even more, from beginner to advanced level skills the Vogue Sewing Book has information on embellishments, tailoring, hand sewing, linings, and more. The older Vogue book from 1975 is far superior to the newer ones and easy to find in used book stores, so it's also a thrifty choice. Similar but not quite as complete is the "Vogue Butterick Step By Step guide to Sewing Techniques." This book explains pattern instruction sheet instructions in greater detail. http://www.amazon.com/Vogue-Butterick-Step-Sewing-Techniques/dp/1573890049/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1266502935&sr=1-5

And also look into sewing patterns designed for beginners. Kwik Sew brand has a line of absolute beginner patterns called "Kwik Start" and with these you learn by doing. They have simple t-shirts, skirts, tops and jackets and as you use them you learn all the basics of garment construction. The Kwik Sew website has a message board where you can ask for help if you run into problems

After you feel comfortable with these you can move on to any of the other pattern lines such as Simplicity, Burda, Vogue, McCalls and Butterick.

One reason why home dec is often taught first is because it is considered easier, it's almost all straight line sewing, there's little to no turning from wrong side out to right side out and most pressing is flat, not shaped. Of course if you don't need ten yards of curtains it's not very useful.

Finally, there are a few places on line that offer sewing help for beginners. About.com's sewing site is packed with tips, tricks, useful lessons for beginners and a forum where you can ask questions and they will be answered by one of the experts who post regularly on the board. or irregularly, like me. Simplicity pattern's website has lots of useful information for beginners and they have the "It's so Easy" line of patterns that are also good for beginners.

We live on a boat, and have carpeting on the walls. There is moisture constantly inside the boat, and mildew stains have grown. I need a home made remedy, as we are traveling on the Meditterean sea, currently in Spain. So USA store products are not available here.
We live on a boat, and have carpeting on the walls. There is moisture constantly inside the boat, and mildew stains have grown. I need a home made remedy, as we are traveling on the Meditterean sea, currently in Spain. So USA store products are not available here.

A. There are commercial mildew stain removers available. Before moistening the carpeted walls with any product, check to be sure that under the carpet is not wood. Moisture soaking into the wood and not drying will compound your problem.

Can anyone answer a question about the installation of new carpeting?
Q. Just had new carpeting put in and began to notice when walked on you can see the shoe tracks. Is this a characteristic of "cheap" carpeting or is it just a characteristic of new carpeting and something that will go away over time?

A. Just new carpet. When it gets worn they won't show. Enjoy it while it lasts.

What do you think of black walls and grey carpeting?
Q. I have next week off for vacation time and I am considering having my condo painted and new carpeting installed. I want the ceiling and carpeting grey and the walls black. I think that it will go good with the lava lamps and my furniture.

A. I like Black I have black carpet in my daughters room with black and cream bedding. Your choice seems ok.

How do you make fleece bedding for a Guinea Pig?

Q. I've heard that fleece bedding is cheaper thank regular Guinea Pig bedding. How do you go about doing this? Do you put twoels underneath the fleece or something? Also we have several fleece blankets already at our home. Will thoes work?

A. The first response is extremely incorrect. The only way hay can be used as a bedding, is if it's changed daily. Hay molds very quickly.
Fleece is an excellent and inexpensive bedding.
For my fleece, I use fleece with an under bedding of matress pads.
This is an excellent article on fleece how-tos.

How often should i clean the bedding of my snake?
Q. I have aspin bedding on the bottom and im getting him soon so how often should i clean it? Its a ball python btw and how would i bathe him or is it not required?

A. Ball pythons only need to eat once a week. The packaging on most bedding says to change it every 2 weeks, but I only change my once every month. The aspen bedding collects the snake's waste easily so you can just take the waste balls out. You should change it immediately; however, if you ever notice mold or anything that shouldn't. That is possible since you need to spray the bedding often with water to keep the humidity up.

What kind of bedding is good to use for my rabbit?
Q. I got a rabbit and we are moving him outside. I use care fresh bedding now but would like to change it to something more cheaper and better for outside. If you can please include specific details on how to use this bedding or where to get it from. All information is helpful.

A. I use to use straw with ASPEN bedding underneath which is dust free with no harmful chemicals like pine and cedar have. But now my bunny is inside so he has fleece :D But you can use fleece outside too if he is litter trained.

how can I convert my home air condition system into solar energy?

Q. i want to convert the electrical system in my home air condition into solar energy. I have central air at this time.

A. Depending on your location, the size of your home and cooling capacity of your central A/C unit it might be hard to covert 100% of the power use of your central A/C to solar. Not to mention very expensive.

Now if you have a 2,500 sq-ft house and use a 3 ton standard A/C unit at 16 EER it could draw as much as 25amps at 220v you would need about 5.5KW of PV plus a large battery bank to handle surges at (start up, blower, ect.) 250w PV panels are about $1000 each and figure about 2x the PV costs for batteries, inverter, installation, wiring, ect. You can see how this gets expensive quickly.

Living in different part of the US may require even more PV panels. Plus, you will need to put the PV panels on a tracking system (a mount that tilts the panels to be perfect aligned with the sun's path) There are always cloudy days, so if the humidity is not too bad you can hopefully shut the A/C off and credit your electric bill by turning your electric meter backwards.

A better option might be to sell your central A/C and replace it with a heat pump system. A heat pump uses the ground temperature to cool and heat. It may seem more complex but is rather simple can be far less expensive than a full blown PV system. The heat pump can run 24/7 cooling or heating as needed and can provide 4 times the amount of energy they consumes.

Info on Solar energy in a home?
Q. Where can i find information about building a home that uses mostly solar energy? Are there websites for this?

A. Google search "solar builders" for a good start.

Can solar power really be cost effective in the near future?
Q. In the next year or two, Will consumers choose to power their homes with solar energy based on saving money alone?

A. Solar energy is definitely an alternative to wasteful and harmful burning of fossil fuels. Now I will admit solar panels used to produce energy is a bit costly but in the long run it pays for itself by cutting your energy bill dowm drastically

How much does it cost to finish an attic?

Q. Okay so it doesn't need heating, air, or plumbing. It already has electricity. It already has stairs going up to it. I just want it insulated, drywall up, flooring finished (the ply wood stops about 3 deet from the edge on 2 sides.), and maybe a closet put in.

A. Depends on how large it is and to a lesser extent what kind of flooring. You can probably get it insulated, drywalled and painted for roughly $4500, maybe a little less if you find an out of work handyman on Craigslist etc. to save on labor or a bit more if it has a high ceiling.

Add another $1200 if the floor only needs to be extended on the boarder with plywood and putting down cheap linoleum or carpet, more for hardwood or tile, or for a mix of these. Add another $1000 if the existing plywood is not sufficient for regular travel, needs to be replaced with some that is thicker.

The rate will also vary based on your location, the only way to get an accurate estimate is to get a contractor to come and make a bid after you've decided the particulars of how it is finished.

What do i use to prepare a basement floor for finishing?
Q. I have a Superior Wall basement. When they finished it had expansion seams in the floor and a 2"x2" hole in each of the four corners. Most of my moisture is coming from these holes. I want to prepare the floor for finishing but i need to adress these holes and seams but just don't know how.

A. The joints can be caulked. A flexible caulk will still allow for expansion and contraction.

What were the holes in the corners for? Might they be for a drainage system? Did the installer say anything about that? How deep are the holes, are they filled with dirt? Does water stream into your basement through the joints or those holes? Are the walls and floor dry, damp or wet? Did the basement floor get poured over foam insulation or gravel or just dirt? Is the basement heated and air conditioned?

The simple answer is to caulk the joints and fill-in the holes with cement. Then lay down a heavy gauge plastic vapor barrier and build a 2x4 framed, 3/4" thick plywood subfloor. Then you could install whatever flooring you wanted on top of that.

However, if there is regular moisture on the floor then you run the risk of mold growth and that woul dbe a bummer.

You might want to get some estimates from several contractors and see what issues they might have with the current foundation/floor. You may want one of them to do the job if they are a reputable company and will provide some sort of warranty against moisture entering through the floor.

How do you get cat urine out of a hardwood floor?
Q. After we came home from vacation, we discovered that one/both of our cats had taken up urinating on the rugs in the room where their kitty litter box is. They are pretty old and moody cats and I am not completely surprised, although the behavior is new. We did not leave them alone. In fact someone was living in the house just to take care of them.

Anyway, with other material (the rugs themselves, carpeting, etc) I know how to remove it or can easily discard it, but with bamboo flooring I am at a loss! We discovered the spot originally after they had been doing it for some time. Am I out of luck and have to replace my new flooring or is their something that can be done. Most treatments I think would ruin the flooring/finish itself not to mention what seeped through the cracks.
Has any one had luck with Urine off?

A. the urine itself probably already ruined the finish, due the it's acidic nature.

Try bleach, then refinish the floor

or get a new floor

Sorry

What type of floor finishes would you recommend for the following cases?Justify your answer please...?

Q. What type of floor finishes would you recommend for the following cases?Justify your answer.
a) A chemical laboratory
b) A hospital
c) A garage
d) A bath room

A. a) Chemical resistant coating on a concrete floor.
This will allow for a variety of spills without degrading the concrete's strength

b) Jointed flooring system
This will allow for an easy installation on a large surface area. It will also allow spills to be cleaned up easily without any seeping through.

c) Concrete floor with a standard sealant
This will keep the dust down and allow for easy cleaning or such things as oil spills. It will help prevent permanent staining of the concrete,

d) Ceramic tiling
With the large amount of moisture that this flooring will be subjected tom you need a material that is impervious to moisture. Ceramic deters the growth of mold and mildew as it is a nonporous surface.

Hope this helps!

how do can i repair a deep scratch in my hardwood floor?
Q. we recently moved some furniture and scratched a long gouge in the hardwood floors right in the middle of living room. the floor finish is varathane. can i do a touch up job over the existing finish and if so, how do i do that or will i have to sand down the entire area and refinish the entire room?

are there any good quick fixes to this type of problem?

A. A quick fix is wood putty and sand paper, then use an Old English that matches the wood.

Can anyone estimate how much it costs to finish an attic? About 1200 sq ft.?
Q. The attic is unfinished, not fully insulated, unwired, unventilated... but quite large - with floor finished covered. A couple of windows, maybe 8 feet in the center, but fairly steep roof with rafters. Decent staircase up - but would also need a spiral or other additional staircase. Bathroom upstairs would be bonus, but not required. Any estimates? Anyone have anything similar done?

A. with wiring, insulating, ventilation, finishing windows and trim, hanging sheetrock and finishing drywall and painting, and carpet you are probably looking at twenty thousand or so.

How to go about painting interior of home?

Q. Hi,

So I recently bid on an interior home painting job. This job only requires walls done, no ceilings and no trim. It is a 3 bedroom, 2 bath home, no painting in kitchen required. I will be doing a small amount of patch work and sanding to prep for paint. Once neutral color is what owner is wanting, Certain walls will require two to three coats as the existing color is quite dark. That about covers it. I am new to this so was hoping for a few suggestions on how to tackle job. Obviously i will be taping off all trim however do I also tape ceiling area where wall meets at the top? I have a good cutting in brush which I am confident I can use here however want to be sure. Any other recommendations for job. Perhaps cocking along trim of baseboards which are white for nice leveled finish? I am doing the job for $500.00 dollars plus owner is paying for materials. I feel this is an extremely good deal for him and the house is fairly new, so perhaps cocking is unnecessary. This is my first true interior paint job so please help me with the fundaments including materials needed for patch work, sanding grit paper intensity, anything i've missed, etc. It is a 2000 square foot home, and remember walls only. I would really appreciate any type of guidance here as i really need to leave a solid job to obtain future work. Thank you

A. As you know that today fashion is changing day by day and paint is now old idea and expensive also .I am giving you my personal idea as i tried it and it was very effective,,
You should try some home furnishing fabrics like herringbone, printed, wide stripped, dobby, jacquard and solid home furnishing fabrics .As these create a very expensive look to your home ,The good thing is that you can change these fabrics according to your need in different different rooms i know some online stores which are manufacturer and suppliers of these fabrics at affordable rates ,,see more on kochartex website try this and see the difference.

How do you keep your home smelling good?

Q. I am always going into homes where everything smells so fresh and even sweet, what do you use to keep your home and linen smelling so good and long lasting?

A. Dryer sheets, lysol, and carpet powder are your best friends. Potpourri and candles do good to mask the smell, but that's not what you want. It's artificial. It's nice for a scent, but it's not a clean smell, really.

After cleaning, sprinkle some scented carpet powder on the floor and let it set for a couple of minutes, then vacuum it up. The scent remaining is very faint and fresh. Put a dryer sheet between your linen to keep them fresh smelling. You can also stick a bar of soap or dryer sheet in your closets to keep them fresh smelling. You can even rub a dryer sheet over your furniture (test it first) to give a nice scent AND reduce any static cling. Dryer sheets also clean and de-static-ify (LOL) tv and computer screens. AAAANNNDDD you can put a dryer sheet wedged or taped into an air conditioning vent in every room to spread the fresh scent around. No one will even know it's there.

How can I keep my dog off the furniture?
Q. she is a 5 year old lab and she won't do it when we're home but the minute we leave she makes herself at home! I've tried laying kitchen chairs on the couch but she just knocks them off!

A. This is an issue of obedience. Do NOT spank the dog as another person suggested. This does nothing and may hurt your relationship with the dog more than help. Plus, it is cruel and unnecessary. All it does is show that you are NOT in control.

Your dog has learned that she is barred from the furniture as long as you are there. Once you are gone, it's free game. That's because in her mind, she recognizes the "command" to stay off the furniture being associated with your presence.

Here's a trick to use - and it will take a bit of patience and a few tries, but may work well. Get a can (soda can is fine) and place about 20 pennies in it. Seal the can well. Then leave the area (room or house) in such a way that she thinks she can now go on the furniture, but stay within site of both her and the couch (you may need to trick her or use another person). As soon as she leaps on the couch (or starts to get on the couch), toss the can right at her feet. Do NOT hit her with the can. The goal is to scare her. After she leaps up frightened, walk into the room with a open arms, warm smile and comfortingly say, "come here girl - oh you poor thing, it's scary on that bad couch, isn't it?" What you are trying to do is make it seem like the couch is the one "barking" at her to get off, not you. She will associate going on the couch as "bad" and listening to you as good. As I wrote, she associates the "off" command with you. You want her to associate the command with the couch. So if she sees the couch, she remembers that it "barks" or makes a loud noise when she hops on. So she'll be more likely to stay off the couch.

This is a trick that I was taught by a professional dog trainer (over two decades of professional training) and one that I currently employ. If your dog is responsive to that can, it could be used for a variety of training issues. Do NOT shake the can as a rattle. Just give it one harsh shake - as if you just gave one loud "bark". So if she jumps on a person, shake the can once at her and say "down" or "off". This is just one example of how it can be used. Alpha dogs in the wild will give tiny nips at the neck and one loud bark to control the other dogs in the pack. This is even true for a group of dogs at play (when one will become the alpha). The goal is for YOU to become the alpha dog and then teach her "manners", like not jumping, not barking and staying off the couch.

Good luck!

Who are the best " green " commercial lighting contractors in the Midatlantic region? LEED accredited ?

Q. I am designing a LEED silver office building, and I have some questions regarding daylighting and other energy effecient lighting technologies, from a contractors practical point of view.
Thanks !

A. I don't have any suggestions for the best commercial lighting contractors. However, the U.S. Green Building Council's membership directory is a good place to start. You can access it online at no charge at http://www.usgbc.org/myUSGBC/Members/MembersDirectory.aspx?CategoryID=2&CMSPageID=140. You can retrieve results by category (Contractors and Builders) and State.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you need more information.

i figured, that the emergency lights would have to be connected to a 120 power supply from the building to be activated when power is cut. i just dont see how these emergency lights are triggered. unless they are connected to the buildings power?

A. Emergency lighting is always connected to the AC power, both to keep the batteries charged and to detect when to turn on.

If it were not connected to the AC power, how would you charge the batteries?

To repeat, the system is triggered by the AC power going to 0, probably by something as simple as a relay across the AC power leads.

Q. I am home Improvement company I really don't have alot of money to put adds out.I have put in yellow pages and handed out flyers what can I do 2 get more customers. If there anyway to get addeds in papers 4 little money please help in any way

A. Find out if there are any business groups in your area who trade referrals. I am in one group and we have representatives from a lot of diffferent industries (e.g. real estate, tile & granite, insurance, web design etc) and at the end of each meeting we trade referrals. Basically, if I know a person who is looking for home improvement or if the realtor in the group knows a home owner who needs work you would get their name and contact info so you can get the business. It has been great for me and most the members of our group see a significant imporvement in business. We did have a landscape person who eventually had to stop coming because he was too busy!!

You may also want to see about local chamber of commerce events like business after hours etc. It is a lot of work, but referrals are worth their weight in gold!!!

Can I use an AC wall light dimmer as a 12V voltage regulator?
Q. Hi. I need to reduce the voltage of a DC power supply from 16V (external laptop battery) down to 12V so I can use it as a power supply for my other 12 volts gadgets. Can I use an AC wall light dimmer for this? I've read that this works by reducing voltage so an incandescent lamp can be dimmed. I'd like to know your thoughts if it will work for my purpose.

A. You need to learn what regulation means. You might get it to reduce the voltage but that is NOT regulating it.

Replacing a wall light fixture?
Q. I am trying to replace a bathroom wall light fixture. My dilemma is the fixture I took out of the wall has a strip of light bulbs with 6 wires (3 white/3 black). The new fixture only has 2 wires (1 white/1 black). Which wires do I use? What do I do with the extra wires? Will the connection work without the ground?

A. Remove the extra white and black wires, they should be just jumpers connected to the main wires. Then it is white to white, black to black. The connection for a light will work without a ground, but it is safer and to code to use a ground. Usually there is a green or thin bare wire, from the fixture for the ground. It can be directly connected to the box the main wires come into.

How is rustic furniture built or joined together?

Q. How is rustic furniture built or joined together?

A. They use round mortise and tenon joints for most times to built or joined rustic furniture together. The joints are done by glued and sometimes backed-up with a screw or dowel. The mortise and tenon joint is already a very strong mechanical method of joinery; add glue and you get a very strong joint that is built to last longer.

im trying to find a picture of an Italian sidebar piece of furniture made in the 1800's?
Q. I have a piece of Italian furniture built in the 1800's and want to sell it so I need to see a picture of it to know that's what I have. Thank you.

A. It will be practically impossible for me to guess what does your piece of furniture looks like and be able to tell you the value/worth of it. However there are few things you can do to find out what is it worth.

You can take to an appraiser at an Antique shop, or you can take a photo to them. I would suggest that you see as many as possible. It would be important to them to know what is the condition of the furniture. Has it been broken, refurbished, repainted, are there any scratches, chips, etc. Every blemish will diminish the value of the piece.

I am not sure where do you live but I would go to a large city and find out on Google maps the addresses for different Antique stores that do appraisal and visit them.

If you have a photograph of the furniture I would try and post it to this web site (for security purposes do not post your correct zip code and full name). That way you will be able to get some opinions of what do you have in your possession.

Wishing you good luck!

What kind of wood is used or how is it treated to prevent it from splitting?
Q. I want to dabble in rustic log furniture building. Wondering what kind of wood is used and/or how is it treated to prevent it from splitting as it ages. See http://www.yellowstonefurniture.com/images/alderchair.jpg

A. For branch-built furniture, willow is a good choice.
For log furniture, it's fairly typical to use species of pine... as the knots provide interest. (Sometimes the splits do, too.)
To keep from splitting, would recommend using seasoned wood... wood that has been dried in a kiln or left to dry naturally for at least a year. More is better. Moisture is the enemy and if you work with green wood, it will eventually shrink and may split. Another tactic is to pre-drill all the fastener holes and use dowels and/or mortise/tenon joints.

But, that's for big things like beds and large chairs. For bentwood... it's branches and brads or binding material to hold shape. Rawhide makes a good lashing... put it on soaking wet, let it dry = super strong.

And, of course, I'm sure there are a host of DIY sources on the web.

Good luck.

How hard is it to remove/hide a fireplace no longer wanted.?

Q. We are turning this room into a childs bedroom.

A. The easiest way I can think of would be to attach studs to the existing walls around the fireplace. Then you can build a box that will fit over the fireplace and attach it to the studs that you already put up. This way if you decide at some point in the future that you DO want a fireplace in that room it will be fairly simple to take down the "false" wall or box. Any more questions, feel free to shoot me a message.

What's the normal length for Window Valance to fit most Windows?
Q. How many do you need to buy in order to cover two windows in your childs bedroom?

A. The size of the valance should be printed on the package. Measure the window and add a couple of inches on each side to find out the minimum size you need. You should only have to buy one per window, unless the windows are inordinately large.
Windows vary a lot in size, so there are several "standard" sizes. If in doubt, buy the larger one and you can bunch it up on the drapery rod.

Q. I've searched and searched, but I keep getting vintage books on mid-century modern home plans. I'm looking to build a home and I need a home plan that is more recent than that to give to the contractors. A. I can't think of any right now. Try google.

What are some websites with 'green' home plans?
Q. Meaning environmentally-friendly home plans. Websites please.

(United States only, please.)

A. Let me start off by saying we (my family and I) live completely, 100% âoff of the grid and are completely self sufficientâ

The house is built utilizing natures natural elements, in the shape of an octagon with 8ft wide arch doors on every wall to catch every angle of wind (typical 4 sided homes have half the chance as one with 8 sides. A circle being the most efficient design). Woodburning stoves, solar chimney, solar AC, solar heating, solar water heating (pool and home), solar stove, solar power, wind power, hydrogen powered back up generator, hydrogen back up water heater, hydrogen stove, 2 hydrogen powered trucks, 1 EV (electric vehicle) and satellite internet.

We also built many green small cabins on the ranch that we offer to family, friends and our on-site off-grid workshop guests, including one straw bale, one papercrete, earth bag and adobe, one cob and cordwood, one underground and rammed earth, one log and post and beam and one rock. Each one actually started as a test for what the main house would be and were later finished and turned into guest cabins. I later wrote a guide on how to build with alternative materials using alternative methods for next to nothing.

We raise meat and milk goats, chickens for meat and eggs, ducks for meat and eggs, trap havilina (wild boar pig), rabbit, quail. brew our own beer from home grown products, preserve our fruits, vegetables, etc. smoke and jerky the meat, make our own soap, cheese.

There are no utility lines, no water lines, no roads, tv, cell service, etc. on our ranch. EVERYTHING needed is produced here. All electricity comes from 27 solar panels, 2 main wind gens and a back hydrogen generator if needed (typically we can last 9 days with all luxuries of sunless windless weather, hasn't happened yet). Water is caught and storaged from the rain. Hot water is made with solar batch water heaters with an on-demand hydrogen hot water heater as backup. Even our vehicles use alternative energy (2 hydrogen trucks, 1 EV electric vehicle converted). Because of this we have no bills, no debt and no mortgage.

Anyone interested can check it out at..

www agua-luna com

I believe this is the first step anyone can make âhelp the environmentâ. Once you convert your own life style to a greener more eco friendly route, you can start helping others.

my home has all the comforts listed above plus some. we live very comfortable without effecting the environment. just saying that tol et you know it's possible. you may not want to go as extreme as me and my family but anywhere in between is something.

Without getting to in depth here, Using alternative fuels in your vehicles and harnessing your own electricity from the sun, water, earth and wind are the 2 are key elements in making a green transition and erasing your carbon footprint.

here's a calculator to find out how much of a green impact your making (carbon footprint)

http://www.conservation.org/act/live_green/carboncalc

if you'd like to make your next step feel free to contact me personally at www agua-luna com

I've been installing home made Solar panels. Solar stoves, Solar batch and inline hot water heaters. Solar radiant heating. Solar home heating and AC, along with home made wind gens and other alternative energy items for the last 3 years.

You can even make the above projects on site with simple parts from the local hardware stores or auto stores or junk yards. For more info check out some guides I wrote / compiled on how to DIY www agua-luna com

Again these projects can be accomplished anywhere by anyone.

if you absolutely can't do anything in your home at least you can put alternative fuels in your car. most major automotive manufacturers (Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors, etc) recommend the use of bio fuels, and nearly every car manufacturer in the world approves ethanol blends in their warranty coverage.

In fact your probably even driving an ethanol car and didn't even know it.

The trick is finding fuel.

I've been producing biofuel for about 3 years now, it's not extremely difficult. Basically you need general household ingredients, a processor (or still for ethanol) and some used oil. Blend it, let separate, screen and use. I complied a guide a while back to help walk you threw the process step by step, just email me or check out..

www agua-luna com

as for recyling the best way i've found without taking money from your won pocket is to join a free freecycle group in your area or visit the habitat for humanity.

If youâd like help in making your self sufficient steps, feel free to contact me directly. Iâve written several how-to DIY guides available at www agua-luna com
on the subject. I also offer online and on-site workshops, seminars and internships to help others âhelp the environmentâ.

Hope this helped, feel free to contact me personally if you have any questions if youâd like assistance in making your first self sufficient steps, Iâm

Does a cultured marble bathroom countertop fall under the category of "engineered stone?"?

Q. I'm remodeling a bathroom. The contracter specified cultured marble. I see that Consumer Reports gives engineered stone the highest rating for bathroom countertops. So is what I'm getting an engineered stone, or not?

A. David B is 99.9% rt. Cultured marble is a marble dust poured together w/ resins and epoxies to form a solid surface( so you have a 'stone" in it lol), very durable but not an engineered stone as your thinking. GL

I'm remodeling my kitchen and need a great wall oven?

Q. I'm looking at Sears, but I am overwhelmed with all the brands and choices. Which brand(s) has the best wall 30" ovens? I'm also looking for a great microwave to go above it. I'd like to get some good prices as well.

A. GE makes good appliances. Their industrial brand is GE Monogram and their prosumer brand is GE Profile. For the microwave, check out the GE's Advantium microwaves. They make Monogram and Profile versions. The Advantium combines a microwave with a halogen light for crisping and a true convection oven. One example of how you can use it is for cooking frozen chicken fingers. The microwaves cook the inside of the chicken while the halogen light crisps the outside. It also has smart reheat modes. Just check it out, you will love its features.

Refinishing Electric Stove Backguard?
Q. So in the midst of cleaning the kitchen, my girlfriend wanted to use Easy Off to clean the backguard of our stove in order to degrease it. I told her we shouldn't just in case it ruined it, since the backguard is in plain view. Well she did it, and it ruined it.

The part that is ruined is the top part of the backguard, so not the part that houses the switches to the burners, but the top cover of it. I believe the material is aluminum and used to have a gloss black finish. Now its got a matte dark grey color to it. Is there a kind of paint or polish I can use to restore glossy black finish?

A. Talk to someone in an appliance store. You might be able to get it painted. Tell your girlfriend - When in doubt, read the instructions!

Moving into first apartment, tips!?
Q. Hi!
My partner and I are moving into our first apartment from living with my parent.
The apartment comes with nothing, no fridge, cooker, washer or furniture.

What is the best way to get everything done? Which order do we buy things in, bed, fridge, cooker etc?
Can it all be arranged to arrive on a Saturday so we are both there?

Does anyone have any tips for us as we've never done this before!

Thanks :)
Oh, also, when do I need to contact utilities and broadband providers etc?

A. First of all the landlord must supply you with a fridge, stove & sometimes washing machine unless you have purchased the house yourself and you own it, then yes its your responsibility. Anyways the first thing you will need to purchase is a bed. I would then purchase all the kitchen appliances fridge, stove, cooking utensils, kitchen appliances. I would then buy a T.V as well as couches and all other living room accessories. You should probably also get a dresser and night stands for your bedroom and a dining table would be suitable. That covered since you are moving in on Saturday I would have already contacted your necessary utilities services. All you will have to do is inform them with the date your moving in as well as your information and new address. Do this immediately so if they need to come into the apartment to set up anything then they can set up a time on the saturday and you wont be left days without cable etc. Other then that, good luck.

How do they make the commercial with light pictures?
Q. It's a commercial for a printer or camera or something, and it has people making shapes with glow sticks or sparklers in the dark. How do they make it?

A. It's called light painting. Those commercials are lots of individual shots put together.

Light painting is done with a long exposure in minimal light. Or no light. While the photo is being exposed, the person "writes" in the air with a glowstick or a pen-light. The exposure usually goes on long before or after the person has done the writing, so they often don't appear at all as the scene exposes without them in it.

If doing it in no light at all, fire a flash after you're done to expose the rest of the scene.

When making storage furniture does it have much use of computer aided design/manufacture?

Q. I am making a small wooden storage box in my d.t class at school and i need to find out whether or not it uses cad/cam. Thank you :)

A. I don't know what D.T. class is. If you have easy access to CAD/CAM (computer aided drafting/computer aided manufacturing) and you know how to use it, then draw your design with details on size 'c' format. This way you can show the details, and B/M on one sheet. Include on this drawing a final 3D assy. in the upper right hand corner. It is always nice to use and store a professional drawing.
And, if you want to make changes to the project, very easy for additions or revisions. For record keeping you'll have a disk instead of a paper copy and future projects can all be stored one this one disk. A nice way to go.

Is there an danger in keeping your furniture in storage?
Q. I'm moving out in a few weeks to go live with my Mom while I save up some money to get an apartment. While I'm living with her I was thinking of getting a storage unit to keep furniture I buy while I live with my mom, so when I move out I'll have furniture for my apartment. Is there any danger in keeping nice new furniture in a storage unit? Specifically in Florida.

A. Only if you put it in a climate controlled storage facility. Otherwise the extreme heat in summer and cold in winter will damage your things. Honestly it would be best if you wait to see what kind of apartment you will be renting before buying anything. The size of the space and the degree of difficulty in getting your furniture in should be the determinant on what you buy. Otherwise you can wind up buying oversized pieces that will not fit and you will feel cramped. So put your money for furniture into a savings and wait to see where you will be living before buying.

How often does furniture inventory turnover at a large retailer?
Q. We've found furniture that we like but aren't moving into our new house for about 6-8 months as it is being built. We don't have any room to put new furniture but don't want it to be gone/discontinued by the time we need to buy it.

A. It depends. Some retailers sell "open stock" They order furniture, often by the container load, and sell it when it comes in. When it's gone, it's gone and they may or may not order more of the same or even keep the same manufacturer.

Others sell a manufacturer's line and will have display models and inventory or order things just like it as sold. They will continue to sell as long as the manufacturer makes that model and/or they have some in inventory.

Others are "made to order" particularly upholstered furniture. You pick out the style and the fabric (sometimes from 1000s of options). As long as the fabric is available (average lifespan 3-5 years) they will make it for you.

The other thing to do is just ask the retailer. They may know if the style is being discontinued soon. If so, you can buy it and have them hold it for you until you are ready. This may involve a storage or warehousing charge. Or you can put down a deposit and have them let you know if this is happening during the time you're waiting.

Can you explain the extensive features of the application of roofing materials?

Q. Can you explain the extensive features of the application of roofing materials? What type of reflective results they can provide?

A. The application of Liquid applied acrylic coatings is rather simple. All that's needed is a paint roller or an airless spray rig. The reflective results are 85% UV reflective. You can purchase these coatings on the web page listed below. The different types of coatings are Benchmark and Rapid Roof.

What is the linear coverage (length) of a roll of double coverage roll roofing material?
Q. How many feet long is a roll of double coverage roofing material?

A. One roll of this product (also called 19" selvedge, duplex, or half-lap roofing) will cover 50 sq ft. Technically speaking, this means the roll is 35' 4" long. The rolls are usually a couple of inches long.

Keep in mind that the material is 36" wide and actually laps 19" -- just a bit more than half, so you only get 17" of coverage per run.

Rolled rubber roofing material, where can I buy it?

How to connect a ceiling light to an existing wall outlet and a single pole switch?

Q. Ok, I am trying to put a dome ceiling light in my bathroom, because there isn't one. Currently I have a single pole switch and a wall outlet. The switch operates the wall outlet. They are two separate units. How do I wire in the ceiling light? Do I wire it to the outlet terminals or to the switch terminals. My guess was the outlet? The wiring is all 14-2 gauge for the outlet and to the switch, 14-2 is also running to the main fuse box. Thanks!

A. Lighting circuitry is often more complex than folk imagine and you have to get it right. If you don't want to pay an electrician, go to the library and do some studying before you try anything. I am not an electrician but I have done a Tech College course so I know what I am talking about. I do not understand what Hank (other answer) is talking about unless a different cable convention exists in the country where he lives; in the UK the cables are always red/brown, black and yellow/green.

Can you paint a ceiling light fixture? I want the actual glass globe painted - is this possible?
Q. I'm looking to paint the ceiling light fixture in my baby's bedroom. I am doing a Dr. Seuss theme and I haven't been able to find a ceiling light fixture and that's what I want. So, I want to know if it's possible to do and if so what type of paint is safe to use (non toxic, non flammable and so on) to paint Dr. Seuss characters on it. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

A. Seems like a bad idea. It will block the light and, if you ever want to change the theme, you will have to buy a new light. Just paint the ceiling around the light.

How can I add a pull chain to a ceiling light fixture?
Q. The previous owners of the house put a ceiling light and a fan with a light kit on the same wall switch. I'd like to have the fan on without the lights. I can use the pull chain on the light kit to kill the light on the fan, but the ceiling light is controlled by the switch. Is there a kit available that will allow me to add a pull chain to that ceiling light, as well?

A. I would check in the electrical department of a big home improvement store like Home Depot or Lowes. They could give you the right advice based on the type of light your are talking about.

Who's responsibility is it to prep an outside area on a building to be painted by a contractor?

I thought that goes without saying that the place to be painted needs to be cleaned and stripped. Who is correct?

A. a contract is a contract , if you sign it, you are agreeing to the terms. However painting generally requires some prep work , And In many cases, the prep work can be 80% of the job.

he should have clarified all this beforehand...find annother painter. he is being sneaky and not honest right from the start

Why are the front doors of some homes painted red?
Q. Why are some front doors to peoples homes painted red??? Is this for good luck?

A. It's what they wanted.

How long should I wait to refinance my home? We bought it 2 years ago.?
Q. I pay extra principle each month on it and would like to refinance enough to pay off my vehicle and to do some remodeling on my home, painting, etc. I would appreciate all insight. Thanks!!

A. There is a great chance you have built up enough equity over the past two years to make this possible. Keep in mind your rate will more than likely go up and so would your payments but it may still save you some money. If your not sure if you have a prepayment penalty you can always check your original documents you signed. Many home owners do debt consolidation like you are considering as the interest you pay on your vehicle is not tax deductible like the interest on your home is. Make sure you consult a CPA to go over the pros and cons. If you need any help or have any questions feel free to email me tadgeman@yahoo.com.

Interior Designs - Bedroom and Bathroom Designs?

Q. Hey people, my house is under renovation and I need a good website that is realted to Interior Designs, decoration, painting, bedroom and bathroom designs.
Thanks

What is the theme in western-style bathrooms?
Q. I'm doing bachelors of architecture and we have this project of theme-oriented bathrooms. and my theme is to design a western-style bathroom, so i can see the pictures on Google and know some basic things that there should be and i can easily design one, but the thing is that I have to give the theme first, so I need the basic theme on which a western style bathroom is designed.

A. The toilets are bigger than other countries typically. The showers always have some sort of enclosed area unlike other countries which just share the same floor as the bathroom. Besides a master bathroom, typically the size of the bathroom can be smaller, especially the half bath. I don't think other countries share the same concept of half bath.

where can I find bedding for a 20 somthing couple?
Q. My boyfriend and I (25 and 24, respectively) are getting our first apartment together. I looked up some really streamlined/classy marvel comics art and told him he could have the living room as his gaming space/man cave if I could have the bedroom and bathroom to design as I wish. While I find it would be easy to go with some soft pastels/florals, I really don't see him waking up to that. My biggest problem is finding a cheap, quality comforter/duvet cover. So far I've tried
urban outfitters
anthropologie
wayfair
jcpenny
macys
target
west elm
blisslivine home
allmodern
etc.

Where can I find quality for cheap?

A. If they have them in your area, check out the home goods department of the Ross Dress for Less stores. Most people think of them as just clothes but they have terrific deals on quality linens in their home decor area. I bought a gorgeous 400 count cotton steel blue and light brown damask design duvet cover and matching shams there last year for $25 ($15 for the cover and $5 each for the shams). The original prices were $160 for the cover and $30 each for the shams.

Have also picked up a teal blue 100% silk quilted queen sized spread there for $30. I have bought Ralph Lauren, Laura Ashley and Tommy Hilfiger sheets for less than $30 a set and countless beautiful throw pillows (some down filled and hand-embroidered) that were $10 to $15 each. They also have drapes, drapery hardware, small furnishings (upholstered benches, night stands, small cabinets), lamps, framed art, mirrors and small area rugs. Obviously, the selection varies so you have to have patience and check their inventory regularly, but the prices are terrific for quality goods.

Also check out The Company Store, who may have the widest range of quality linens. They are not cheap but sometimes they have good deals in their clearance section. They have beautiful and classy designs that appeal to guys as well as women.

L.L. Bean has nice bedding but the designs are not particularly exciting.

What is the best cleaner and or way to clean ceramic tile floors?

Q. What is the best solution and mop to use when cleaning ceramic floors, what makes them shine the best and what cleans them the best. Everything I seem to try is to soapy and does not clean good. Thank you.

A. I've had ceramic tile floors in the whole house for over 25 years and agree, soap doesn't work. I've always used warm water with white vinegar in it. It cuts grease and puts a great shine on the floor -- also, does NOT make the tile slippery like soap can.
Hope it works for you.

how can i clean my ceramic floor so that it is stainless?
Q. I get alot of stains on my ceramic floor even though my shoes are clean! I only mop it using light detergent.. is there a way to make it stainless? it's very irritating you know

A. I've seen a vinegar/water mix work wonders on some tile before.....

A. bullet

Best place to shop for red kitchen appliances?
Q. My husband and I are moving into a new house and I want to do our kitchen in red. Does anybody have suggestions on the best places to buy red kitchen appliances?

A. Amazon and eBay are good for small appliances, and the reviews can be really helpful. But for bigger red kitchen appliances you might want to check out places like Sears, Home Depot, etc. where you'll actually have a chance to see and use the appliance before buying. A site I like that highlights some nice smaller items is http://www.redkitchenstuff.com/.

It can also be risky to buy big appliances online because it they're damaged during shipping it's a pain trying to get a replacement/refund.

Are used furniture and kitchen appliances safe to buy on Craigslist?
Q. I know from news reports that people have been murdered when meeting in person to buy or sell personal electronics (iPhones, iPods, etc.). But is it any safer to meet strangers when trying to buy furniture and kitchen appliances on Craigslist?

A. I would be more concerned with insect infestation. Regardless, never go alone. Take a can of pepper spray. Know the neighborhood.

The white one.

A. the white one with rocks around the baths or the white one with the circular shower?
I'm not an architect or interior designer but to me the one with rocks looks like sandstone bathroom tiles (I'm in australia and we have a lot of sandstone, including my back covered patio which is paved with it)
The white one with circular shower looks like white quartz.
I could be wrong but check google images. This link is for the sandstone bathroom tiles

How to make my bedrrom more like a teen bedroom!?
Q. Hi everyone! So im 14 and I want to make my room alot more like a teen bedroom, but i dont mean like posters of bands and all that stuff, i want like bright colors and cool stuff like that, somewhere where me and my friends can just hang out, right now my room is soo broing, the walls are a light pale purple white yellowish-white carpet and white furniture and my bed doesnt have a headboard, it has one of those white net-canopy things, I;v tried re arranging the furniture and everythign but it still doesnt work. Is there any way I could make a huge difference without having to paint the walls or buy a bunch of new stuff, I can buy some new stuff just not paint and new bed sets and stuff. Anyway, any help would be appreciated, Thanks! And by the way if anybody knows any sites with good tips for teen bedrooms that would help alot too! Thanks!By the way, my room isnt very big and the furniture is pretty outdated.

A. Don't worry, Mine is the same way...only i'm redoing everything.
Why can't you paint it? New paint is one of the best ways to make a room cool-looking.
I'll share what i'm doing, and you can take any ideas that could work for you :)
I'm painting my walls, three grey ones and a silver one. Taking out my carpet and putting in that wood stuff. I'm also getting plants, like bonsais and cool little ones for my desk. I'm getting a navy bedspread and navy curtains with lime green beads. Stereo, and pictures of all my friends and pets and family in cute picture frames, and all my old Tshirts that either got holes or too big/small I'm turning into pillows, in addition to buying some new pillows. lamps are also a great way of lighting up a place and making it look cool. I also need to get a cute little chest for my dog's toys.
Good Luck ffrom a fellow 14 year old! :)

My friends are moving to a new apartment soon and for X-mas i want to get them a giftcard for home furnishings

Q. They are expecting a new baby and moving to a new apartment and I want to get them a giftcard to a home furnishing store, but I cant think of a good one all of a sudden. Any ideas??

A. Target is great for these occasions and they have online gift cards available too.

Is it better to show an empty house or furnished house when selling a home in an estate?
Q. If furnished, keep in mind that the contents of the home will be that of the deceased. Creepy? Or is it better to have the home furnished and looking "homey"?

A. I like to look at them vacant, but not everyone does.

Remove all personal items, all clutter and keep it simple. Remember that you want people to be able to visualize themselves living there. If they feel like they are intruding on someones home they may not be able to do that.

How can an Interior Decorator get a Designer or Trade Discount?
Q. I am curious if it is possible to get a Designer or Trade Discount from home furnishing stores as an Interior Decorator (not an Interior Designer). Does anyone know if this is possible, and if so- what kind of proof (certificate/professional membership/etc.) must an Interior Decorator show to the stores in order to receive the discount? In general, do most home furnishing stores offer discounts if you are an Interior Decorator versus and Interior Designer? Thanks for any info.

A. You can register at big box stores ( Home Depot, Rona, Lowes etc.) as a contractor, with a business licence and business cards showing proof that you are a designer. Wallcovering, paint, furniture and flooring stores will also do the same if you are an acknowledged professional. Smaller operations will have their own system of passing on discounts, or not, to designers who frequently purchase product from them. They will then subsequent mark it up realistically to their client, as designers do have to earn a living, and the client will still probably benefit by a somewhat discounted product, better than what they would have gotten.
If you are in business, I don't believe the difference between a decorator or a designer effects your discount. Keep in mind though that retailer's are wary of people posing as such to simply get a deal. Hope this helps.

Can a half of a can of interior paint that is out in the garage during freezing weather be used again?

Q. I started a project a month ago to paint some interior walls but I got too busy to finish, can I continue with interior paint that has been sitting in our garage in below freezing temperatures to work again? I was wondering if I need to go buy another can of the same paint instead of messing up and taking a risk of using what I have already started to uset. Can anyone help me before I begin the project again. HELP!
Just FYI...the paint is water based. Hope that helps when answering the question. Thanks! :)

A. There is no "set" answer to this, as paint comes in a vast number of chemical combinations, and it depends on the paint you have.

A very broad answer is that some water-based paints will not survive. Others will survive, but may dry with a flaky or loose finish when applied. Some will work nearly, or fully, as well as before.

Oil-based paints are harder to predict. The solvents will be undamaged, but the solids may congeal and become useless.

All you can do is to slowly thaw your paint indoors, (do NOT apply any heat to speed it up,) then try to mix it. If it mixes well, try it on a spare piece of material and let it dry for a few days, then examine it and rub it with a coarse cloth to test its staying ability.

Note

Once it is fully dry, compare the newly-painted piece with whatever you painted before, as the frozen paint may have acquired a colour shift.

Would painting over interior paint with exterior paint on an outside wall hold up in the elements?
Q. I was given the wrong paint while working on a project, and am now worried about the paint buckling because it is interior paint on an outside wall. Can I simply paint over it with exterior paint or would it still lead to buckling because of the binding in the interior paint?

A. Sorry to say but simply painting over the interior paint with an exterior paint will not work. The elements will break down the binding of the interior paint coating and start peeling or splitting both that coat and the exterior coat on top. How large was the area that you have to redo? The best thing is to remove the original layer of paint and re-paint. Unfortunately! You will be told that you can use other products or methods but none of them will work as well as stripping off that layer of interior paint.

Accidentally put interior paint on the exterior of my home?
Q. There was a mix up at the paint store I guess. There was existing exterior paint on the trim, I painted it today with interior paint - can I just put exterior paint over it or do I have to strip it off?

A. You should be ok, especially if the paint was oil/solvent based rather than water based. Whenever you choose to repaint there is no need to strip this off.
