Where is the wall decor on stardoll?

Q. I am looking for the zebra wall paper on stardoll. I searched wall decor but the zebra print wall decor didn't show up. I am looking for the zebra print one that DOESN'T have the blue stripe on it. Thanks!

.

A. MINISHOP > DIY > Wall treatment > Pg 1 > Zebra Stencil

That's the only one I can find that isn't the one with the blue stripe.

Covering metal kitchen cabinets with window film or wall decor product.?
Q. I painted them a few years back. Stuff was almost toxic, had to leave home for a few days. I've seen window film and wall decor. Has anyone tried this on metal kitchen cabinets? I would like to know before I buy product. I really like some of the designs. Contact paper is out for many reasons! I need to redo all of the cabinets on two walls. Thank you.

A. Wow.. What kind of paint did you use ? They do have low VOC paints that don't fume that badly while drying.

As far as using window films, I'm not sure what type your thinking of. I have seen the "chrome" or mirror films used before, but the results are hit and miss..

You could take the cabinet doors down and bring them outside or into the garage to paint too.. That would help keep the fumes to a minimum.

Info on learning how to make wall decor signs with lettering?
Q. I would like to learn how to make those wall decor signs that always have some quote, phrase, name or word on it. For example I have seen some that say "cafe" or "this is where our story begins". Does anyone know if there are places that have classes for this or a book or magazine that teaches you how?

A. I think you need special machines for that. They arent that expensive and I know of a company that can customize what you want and at fairly cheap. You should email them. I had a friend who put cool quotes throughout the ceiling with their vinyls... looked great.

check out http://www.carfacial.com/gallery.html adding decal to your wall would look super cute!!!

What color should I paint my bedroom to compliment whitewashed furniture?

Q. My bedroom set is whitewash in color...like a very light tan, but whitewashed. Unfortunately my walls are a very light brown. To make matters worse I have a tiled floor and the tiles are almost the same color as the furniture. I have to contrast anywhere and the room is VERY boring. I have no idea what wall color would go well with the furniture. Can you please help me?

A. Check out "tempo teal" on bedroom #3 in this link.
http://sherlink.sherwin.com/swapp/color_visualizer/index.jsp
Just click on "paint an interior," then "bedrooms." Then you can type "tempo teal" in the search field, or just start trying on colors. It's fun.

How do you unlock a bedroom door from the outside?
Q. I accidentally locked my bedroom door from the inside. It is one of those doorknobs with the little hole in the middle and the lock on the other side that you push to lock and turn the handle to release. I've tried using wire hangers, and it hasn't worked. Please help.

A. It depends upon the type of lock that is on the door. If it is a passage lock that is commonly used for a bedroom door then a thin screwdriver inserted in the center hole will engage a slot and you will be able turn it 90 deg to unlock the door.

If it is a keyed entry set like an exterior door then there are several possibilities. If the hinges are on your side slide the center pin out and open the door from the hinge side. If not then you might be able to "card" the door if the lock is of inferior quality. If it is of better quality and installed correctly then see the next:

If it is a dead bolt then you will have to break the door, drill out the lock, find the key, or call a locksmith.

Does a bedroom have to have a window in PA?
Q. I live in an apartment that was listed as a 2 bedroom. One of the bedrooms does not have a window. Is there supposed to be a window for emergencies or ventilation? Does anyone know the laws for this sort of thing?

A. You do need to have ventalation in a beedroom. But more important you need egress. At least one window in each bedroom must be of sufficient size to permit the occupants to escape a fire and also to allow a fully outfitted firefighter to enter.

An egress window must satisfy all four Internatioinal Residential Code (IRC) criteria:

Minimum width of opening: 20 in.
Minimum height of opening: 24 in.
Minimum net clear opening: 5.7 sq. ft. (5.0 sq. ft. for ground floor).
Maximum sill height above floor: 44 in.

So if it doesn't ahve this it's not a bedroom. A simple call to your local bulding department can confirm this.

home plan and started drinking heavily and the parole officer arrested him and put in jail .how long in jail?

Q. he has been in jail since beginning of Aug08 this is sept08. how much time will he get for parole violation for drinking?also he left the person who made the home plan with all the bills that he was supposed to help ,etc rent, gas, light ,water. how can my friend get him to pay after he is sentence to jail.can the parole board and probation help the friend get the money from the violator?

A. he will be in jail for as long as he was sentenced or until he gets paroled again ( if he dose not when).as far as the friend who got stuck with all the bills... not much he can do about that. and if i was him i would not help the man again. but i would lie to the guy saying if the bills where paid then he could use them as a home plain again and if he pays it turn around and say no to him. the guy had his chance for freedom and he wasted it and on top of that the pple who helped him got screwed with the bills let him sit in jail.

How much will my interest rate be on a home purchase?
Q. My girlfriend and I are looking to move into a new home come Dec/Jan. She is a 650 credit score, I am a 600. Looking in the price range of a $100-150K home. Planning on putting $2,000 down.

With that being said, what kind of interest rate should I be expecting? Also...I have heard of 80/20 loans. Any feedback on those?

A. I just bought a home about 6 months ago, so I know what your going through. It depends on a few things. Where do you live? How much money do you guys make? What's in your credit history, not just your score!

I can tell you from your credit score that your definitely not going to get the prime rate. You'll probably get a rate a few percents above whatever the best rate is that the mortgage company offers.

An 80/20 loan is two separate loans and the 20% loan's rate is always higher. When you make a down payment on a home that is less than 20% of the sale price then you pay on an 80% loan and also a 20% (both %'s are in respect to the selling price on the home) So therefore, you'll either have to take out a 80/20 or a loan for the sale price and then pay mortgage insurance (PMI) (because your down payment is nowhere near 20%).

I was told not to mess with an 80/20 loan for different reasons but you'll have to do your research in order to make the best decision for you two.

Is the Playstation Home aspects of Grand Theft Auto 4 enough to buy the PS3 version over the 360 version?

Q. I'm talking about the Trophies, accessories for your Home avatar, GTA 4 themed Home rooms, etc. (That will come out whenever Playstation Home comes out). Do these features outweigh the 360's achievements and eventual exclusive maps? Also, I do have a Dualshock 3 Rumble controller for the PS3, so rumble is not a contributing factor.

A. PS3 is stronger than 360. Also I heard that PS3 is getting some content too. Home GTA features would be nice too. Yes, I would say PS3 is better.

Living room set with sofa bed in Kansas City?
Q. I am looking for a living room set that includes a sofa bed instead of just the regular kind of sofa. I dont need end tables or lamps or anything else. Just a sofa, chair, and ottoman. I can spend between $1000-2000 on the three items. I live in Kansas City and can't seem to find anything like this at the three places I have been to so far (Nebraska Furniture Mart, Home Rooms Furniture, and Rent-A-Center). I do not need financing.

A. Try these places for your sofa bed: JCPenny, Target, Sofa Express. You might try JC Penny first . They usually got really good quality sofas. You can also go on the web. There are some really good companies out there . The only drawback is that some of the sofas you have to put together yourself.

Can you use a thick heavy curtain for a home theater room?
Q. - If I wanted to divide my home theater room from another room without drywall, could I use a thick heavy curtain?

A. Yes, a lot of people use curtains.
Acoustic room dividers are available in the forms of folding screens also. An optimal acoustic room can be realized via thick carpeting by using the sofas, acoustic wall drapes, cushions and acoustic wall panels.

What is the best material for unique patio furniture?

A. If you check out this website http://www.patiofurnitureusa.com/ you will find some very high quality patio furniture made out of all sorts of material. There are wicker sets, wooden sets, mosaic, iron, aluminum, etc. Also, the site offers tons of variety of styles! Good luck! Hope this helps!

How do I restore rusted iron patio furniture?
Q. My mom has this great iron patio furniture that has, over the years, rusted and I'm interested in fixing them up for her. I'd like to be able to do it as a mom/daughter project. Any ideas?

A. Unless you are unusually thorough, sanding or rubbing with steel wool will not remove all of the rust. If you do not remove all of the rust it will likely come back fairly quickly.
As others have pointed out, the absolute best way to remove the rust is by sand-blasting or bead-blasting but this is not a DIY project.
If you want to DIY, I would recommend you brush the furniture with a wire brush, apply naval jelly and wash off, dry thoroughly, lightly sand and immediately apply a rust inhibiting primer and coats of paint.
If you want the best result possible, find a shop that does powder-coating. They will generally blast off the rust and apply a baked on durable finish in an assortment of colors, generally for a reasonable price. We had this done to a set of old furniture and the results far exceeded our expectations

What is the best product to use on my teak wood patio furniture to keep it looking new?
Q. I have exspensive teak wood patio furniture, now a couple of years old, but they need help. They are seasoned and need to be brought back to life. Is there a simple way to clean & finish them? Is there an oil to rub on them?

A. The Premium Teak Wood Oil gives your teak wood long lasting protection against the elements. The ultraviolet absorbers in the oil helps maintain the warm natural coloring. This particular brand is rated #1 in independent testing, and lasts 4-6 times longer than other standard teak oils.

How can I find out what company supplied the cement and building materials for a state construction project?

Q. If anyone knows about the building materials used in Boston's Big Dig... that would be helpful. I am very interested in the cement...not the bolts holding up ceiling.

A. There are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of separate contracts for the project known collectively as "the big dig". "Aggregate Industries" supplied much of the concrete, but virtually every plant in the New England area supplied at least some of the mix used on the project. Many construction contracts included both construction and materials, so the concrete supplier did not submit a separate bid, but was priced in with the contractor's bid.

The custodian of records at the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority has a list of all bid opportunities and all bidders selected. The material is public record.

Massachusetts Turnpike Authority

Is there a book for new homeowners that breaks things down month by month?

Q. We just bought our first home and I am looking for something that tells when I should do each type of home maintenance. Like I know I should clean chimney and gutters in the fall, but how often do I get the furnance cleaned or change the filter. Stuff like that.
i am looking for a book that kind of goes over ALL home maintenance. and when I should do it

A. I'm not being condescending. These are really good books. I've learned alot from them myself.

Home Maintenance 4 Dummies

How can I deal with property grounds maintenance?
Q. I'm a woman over 60 now and I find each year is more difficult to maintain my quarter-acre property lot. Lots of trees, seedlings, weeds, dropped twigs & branches, overgrown shrubs, etc. The property maintenance contractors I've called want a fortune to do what I need done and I am on a retirement pension now. Some won't even just mow the grounds for less than $100 and this time of year it needs it at least once a week. That's just the exterior - don't get me started on home maintenance! What can I do?

A. Do you have any teens in your area? I know I've always done cheep work and some of my peers. You may even be able to find some younger less experienced people on Craigslist. I'm 18 and I charge $10 an hour for this kind of work, and I've even worked it down to $7-8 an hour for poor people. This isn't high skilled work so it would be good to get some young people who will work for cheep.

where in melbourne can I do a basic at home vehicle maintenance course?
Q. Basically I want to do basic home vehicle maintenance course, learn how to check fluid levels, change a battery, jump start a car, change a tyre, change wind wipers, changes spark plugs and a basic fault finding guide if I break down somewhere.

A. Have you tried googling "Car maintenance courses Melbourne". I found one short course offered at Swinbourne. If that one is not appropriate, then you could continue the search a bit further through the google list that comes up. Good luck. It's a good idea to have a knowledge of how to do those basic things.

What type of store sells cheap vintage/antique-looking home decorating stuff?

Q. What type of store sells cheap vintage/antique-looking home decorating stuff? Like Mirrors, Picture frames, furniture, end tables, lamps, etc.
either a real store or online, doesn't matter.

A. All thrift stores

Guys: Does it make you Angry that women try to Monopolize the Home Decorating?
Q. A lot of women in general think they are entitled to do all the home decorating and also throw out a lot of their guy's possessions. This is near the top of my hate list. What do you guys think about this? Doesn't this outrage you? Are you just going to take that? If you pay for half of the rent or mortgage, don't you think you have the right to decorate half of your residence the way that YOU like it?

A. Besides me not knowing one curtain from another If it were left up to me the house would be functional but not matched.

But I have learned to be careful. One woman I used to date asked to fix up my living room. Nothing matched but it was comfortable. I went on a business trip and came back 6 days later and had new paint, new curtains, new pictures on the wall, new carpet, new lighting and new furniture. Oh yeah and a bill for $23,000 since she hired professionals and did none of the work herself.

I did not think it was possible to spend that much money on a living room. As for you situation, which half of the bed do you like? Or would you perfer the sofa?

How can I add a pull chain to a ceiling light fixture?

Q. The previous owners of the house put a ceiling light and a fan with a light kit on the same wall switch. I'd like to have the fan on without the lights. I can use the pull chain on the light kit to kill the light on the fan, but the ceiling light is controlled by the switch. Is there a kit available that will allow me to add a pull chain to that ceiling light, as well?

A. I would check in the electrical department of a big home improvement store like Home Depot or Lowes. They could give you the right advice based on the type of light your are talking about.

Can I power a light switch and two ceiling lights from an adjacent duplex outlet?
Q. In my bathroom, there are two ceiling lights controlled by an SPST switch. Next to the switch, in the same box in the wall, is an outlet. The lights no longer turn on. I tried a new switch, no dice. However, the outlet right next to that switch still works. They each (the switch and the outlet) have a different feed coming to them as far as I can see, looking inside the wall. In other words, I don't see one of them branching of from the other. So, I am wondering if it is possible or advised to connect the switch to the outlet, and run new wire to the ceiling fixtures, so I can power the lights again? Also, I'd prefer the switch to control the lights only, not the outlet.

A. If you're correct that rhe switch is fed from a different circuit than the outlet, start looking where the lighting circuit goes to from that two gang box. If the lights worked before, now they don't, you could have a tripped breaker or a loose connection somewhere. Good luck and Merry Christmas.

How to install a light switch and additional ceiling lights?
Q. I have a ceiling light with a pull chain in my attic. I want to add two additional ceiling lights with pull chains. I also want to add a switch so all three come on at once. I believe to do this, I can take the wire leading to the first light, wire the black and white to the switch, and the grown as well. Then run a new wire to the first light, and then to each subsequent light. Am I over simplifying?

A. You basically have it. You keep the black wire black and the white wire white splicing a connection at each box. The black wire is supposed to be the "hot" side so your switch will be a break in the black wire and your white will just be connected without the switch.

Do a google on "residential wiring" or "home wiring" there are many sources with pictures and advice.

Anybody ever get a home energy audit?

Q. Has anyone ever hired someone to do a home energy audit where they connect a blower on your door and test your house for leaks? Was it worth it? Did you notice much change in your utility bills after doing it and having the leaks fixed?

A. yes and no.

What home energy saving scams have you found?
Q. open4energy has published a list of home energy scams to help energy conscientious home owners avoid being taken advantage of. They range from down loadable plans to build a magnetic generator, a solar panel or a windmill, to energy saving plug in gadgets, to full blown sales promotions for kvar power factor correction units which have negligible savings capabilities for even the biggest homes.

Each one we find is another community we can protect!

A. The most common website I encounter is DIY solar panels. The claim is that "for under 200 dollars you too can build your own solar panel and save thousands" I do not dispute the validity of that claim. I do take issue with what they don't say. There are some building code violations to say the least. I have posted a blog on this very issue, and will continue to do so on a weekly basis. It is my goal to bring clarity to the cyber solar world. Check out my post "To build or not to build that is the question" at http://www.solarmandan.com.

P.S. Maybe we could post links to each other"s sites.

Q. Looking for a good home energy auditor for GTA. How do you determine whether one is better than the other ?
Does it matter or are they all the same ?
Was wondering whether anyone could recommend good ones.

A. HERS Raters are trained in energy audits

CRESNET is the authority in Canada They have a list of HERS Raters

I would want one that has the following equipment.

Blower Door checks the leakage on your home

Duct Blaster checks the leakage of your ducting system.

IR Camera finds areas of heat loss, moisture, and missing insulation

I would want to know the fee over the phone

What am I going to need straight away when the babies born?

Q. Ive been looking around target and babyco and Im just not sure of the things that I am going to need straight away and things that can just wait a while.

What will need to be in the babies bedroom?
What are the best toys etc?

PLease save this young oblivious girl :-)

Thanks peeps :-)

A. I'll tell you what not to waste your money on...money is in Australian dollars.

Tommee Tippee (or other brand) sanitiser bins (even if you live in an apartment) (waste of $80)

Avent (or other brand) bottle warmers (waste of $80)

Sterilisers - they take 20 mins to sterilise and boiling on the stove takes 5 mins (waste of $300 dollars in total)

0000 & 000 Formal outing clothes - only buy bonds wondersuits with mitten hands (waste of $500 approximation only)

Hooded baby towels (waste of $60)

Baby bath - (waste of $50)

Any Johnson and Johnson products as they all contain damn mineral oil which is a shocker for baby skin (get Innoxa for babies from chemists) (waste of $100)

Toys (waste of $300 - although we will use them later)
but new stuffed toys except for one teddy are going to Westmead Childrens Hospital

Travel cot (waste of $250) - we don't travel

Baby bag from Big W (waste of $90 - just use a regular bag and buy a thermo for babies bottles only if you need it - if breastfeeding take your breasts with you)

The best cot available from Baby Co - a standard cot would have been sufficient (waste of $1000, greys online has cots for $120 that met the Australian standards)

The best mattress available (standard mattress would be Ok as they move out of their cots pretty fast and much faster if they co-sleep (waste of $200)

Best car seat on the market (at the time was on special for $450) - again standard version perfectly fine.

Basically don't get sucked into the hype like we did to get the very best. The best toys are pots and pans and other items around your house.

You only need about a weeks worth of clothing - particularly if you have a dryer - as they grow out of 000's pretty quickly.

My wife just yelled out to tell you that you will need -

breast pads
cotton wool (she didn't use those sensitive wipes until baby was 4 weeks old and still uses the cotton wool with warm water regularly)
maternity pads (but it's best to get tena lady for incontinence as you'll bleed like your "carking it" for about 2 weeks)
panty liners when it slows down
....she's still yelling out stuff - aren't I regretful of asking her for her advice for you....
atleast 2 silicone dummies (pacifiers/binkys - whatever- for the yanks) and 2 latex ones
Maybe a breast pump if you need help stimulating breasts (shop for them and pick one out to send your support person to buy it only if needed)

HAVE PLENTY OF SLEEP NOW...

oH Bloody Hell now I have to Edit my answer so my wife can tell you to buy

Nappies (diapers) - Huggies are the best - they are green in colour or if on a budget buy the small range from Aldi

Baby cream - Amolin is her favourite

Singlets x 7
Body suits x 7
Jumpsuit x 7
socks and mittens (x 2)

Cetaphil (it's sensitive hypollargenic cleanser and safe for babies - doesn't even sting eyes) - used for absolutely everything - washing hair, cleansing and moisturising faces, bums, you downstairs when your too sore for perfumed soaps)

Okay I'm moving on to the next question before she yells out something else...arrrhhh

what is the commercial with the craft maker that shows a babys bedroom?
Q. I was wondering what the name of that craft maker was with the commercial with the woman designing this whole circus tyle party with mustache straws and then she shows a baby's bedroom with a fabric tree and animals. The actual machine she is using for all the decorations looks very small and cool but I cannot remember the name of it. I know its something pretty simple.

A. Is it the Cricut?? I know they make cutouts of paper, and for cakes; not sure about fabrics....

Whats the best way to catch mice?
Q. I have tried the humane way, but gave up on that when they moved in to my babies bedroom. Since then i have used 2 different types of poison, glue boards and snap traps. they dont go near the poison and have escaped the glue, and licked the chocolate off the snap trap without setting it off.
Im at the end of my tether, this is a new property and all the flats have been infested with them due to shabby workmanship.
please help me im going out of my mind!

A. Use a mouse trap. Usually, a mouse trap is rectangular in shape and it is made of iron wire mesh. However, u may have to keep a piece of meat or good smelling stuff inside the cage. You will not find blood and flesh splattered. But you will surely find the mouse very much alive and kicking

How to make my bedrrom more like a teen bedroom!?
Q. Hi everyone! So im 14 and I want to make my room alot more like a teen bedroom, but i dont mean like posters of bands and all that stuff, i want like bright colors and cool stuff like that, somewhere where me and my friends can just hang out, right now my room is soo broing, the walls are a light pale purple white yellowish-white carpet and white furniture and my bed doesnt have a headboard, it has one of those white net-canopy things, I;v tried re arranging the furniture and everythign but it still doesnt work. Is there any way I could make a huge difference without having to paint the walls or buy a bunch of new stuff, I can buy some new stuff just not paint and new bed sets and stuff. Anyway, any help would be appreciated, Thanks! And by the way if anybody knows any sites with good tips for teen bedrooms that would help alot too! Thanks!By the way, my room isnt very big and the furniture is pretty outdated.

A. Don't worry, Mine is the same way...only i'm redoing everything.
Why can't you paint it? New paint is one of the best ways to make a room cool-looking.
I'll share what i'm doing, and you can take any ideas that could work for you :)
I'm painting my walls, three grey ones and a silver one. Taking out my carpet and putting in that wood stuff. I'm also getting plants, like bonsais and cool little ones for my desk. I'm getting a navy bedspread and navy curtains with lime green beads. Stereo, and pictures of all my friends and pets and family in cute picture frames, and all my old Tshirts that either got holes or too big/small I'm turning into pillows, in addition to buying some new pillows. lamps are also a great way of lighting up a place and making it look cool. I also need to get a cute little chest for my dog's toys.
Good Luck ffrom a fellow 14 year old! :)

How do I paint on textured walls and create a cute teen bedroom?
Q. I want a cute teen bedroom but my walls are all textured and its really hard to paint on them! I wanted to stripe my walls, but idk how to get a clean line. Also if anyone has any cute color ideas. thanks!

A. Have your mom or dad help you use a laser level and put up painters tape where you want the stripes. Usually it looks better to have them horizontal, rather than vertical.

As far as colors, it depends what theme you want in your room!

Beachy theme: go for a greyish/muted blue
Tuscan/Italy: A rich apricot color
Mexican/Siesta: Rich golden yellow or bold green

You can do whatever your favorite color is! Because your wall is textured it will take multiple coats, unless you want a more weathered look, then you can do a quick fast coat on the taped off area.

Good luck!

How do I find an honest contractor to do some work on my bathroom, at home?

Q. Bathroom work, plus more storage room inside.

A. There is no way to be 100% sure to know if you are going to hire an "honest" contractor. There are things to protect yourself though.
>get references
>check with the BBB to check on any negative reports
>Check to see if the property is owned by the contractor where they reside. AND if they own their home. Be sure they are not a traveling road show.

what is the best way to get rid of bathroom mold in the caulking, tile grout and textured ceiling, for good.?
Q. bathroom has no exhaust fan. Family of six, one bathroom. tile around tub, swirl textured ceiling.
Is this a gut and redue or can this be done with minimum cost?

A. I recommend Tilex; it really cuts deeply into the mold. If a ceiling fan is too hard or costly, ANY fan in the bathroom can help move the humidity out.

Mold spores are everywhere; they simply need water to grow. Install a big fan in the ceiling, put a stand-up fan near the door and clean often. If you have a window, you could get a window fan too.

My bathroom has a really strong urine smell what could this be caused from and what is a way to get rid of it?
Q. I know it's a bathroom of course it's gonn'a smell like urine but it's so strong I can't barely stand it. I clean my bathroom about 3-4 times a month.

A. Do you have men or boys in your home? If so, the floors and walls around the toilet need to be cleaned regularly, as well as the toilet itself. You may need to replace the toilet seat and any bath mats or rugs that you have in the bathroom.

If you have carpet around the toilet it should be cleaned with something that will neutralize the urine. I've found that spraying white vinegar on the carpet works well. The vinegar smell will dissipate as it dries and you can then clean the carpet with something a little more fragrant.

Wall paper will also absorb urine and I've tried lightly spraying and wiping it with vinegar and it helps, but I've also had to completely strip the paper and paint the bathroom to get the smell out of the walls. Good luck. I hope you find something that will solve your problem.

What do I need to get started painting?

Q. I want to paint some canvas pictures to hang in my childs bedroom. What do I need and what is the best kind of paint to use?

A. This sounds like a great idea. If you've never painted before, these are some of the supplies you'll probably need:

- Paint. I agree with the previous poster that acrylic is best for the sort of thing you've described... It dries much faster and there's no toxic fumes or paint thinner to deal with. If you aren't sure of the colors you'll be using, you can mix pretty much anything with black, white, the primary colors, and burnt sienna. Good starter brands are Golden, the Utrecht brand, and (sometimes) Windsor Newton.

- A tray. Paper plates work fine, or a plastic cutting board if you want something reusable.

- Brushes. A good starting collection would be a medium-sized round brush, a small round brush for detail, and a larger square brush for blocking and washes.

- Extras like acrylic medium to thin paint and slow drying, pallet knives if you're mixing larger quantities, and a script liner brush for very fine detail could also be helpful.

There are tons of great books and websites out there to help you figure out where to start the actual painting process, but these are the basic materials you'll need. Good luck!

What's the normal length for Window Valance to fit most Windows?
Q. How many do you need to buy in order to cover two windows in your childs bedroom?

A. The size of the valance should be printed on the package. Measure the window and add a couple of inches on each side to find out the minimum size you need. You should only have to buy one per window, unless the windows are inordinately large.
Windows vary a lot in size, so there are several "standard" sizes. If in doubt, buy the larger one and you can bunch it up on the drapery rod.

how can I make a window blind for a child's bedroom with my own vinyl sheet?
Q. I have a long vinyl advertisement poster that I want to use to make a blind to match the theme of my child's bedroom. I don't know how to construct it.

A. Try these websites:

What comic book characters would be a MUST include in a Home Theater room?

Q. I am in the process of planning out my home theater room. My wife and I grew up with reading and watching the comics from the 70's and 80's. We want to create our home theater room based off of these characters. I have come up with some ideas:

Making the front speakers into buildings and have one the Daily Planet and the other Gotham City Police Dept. with a spot light of the bat symbol.
A bar made to look like Silver Surfers surf board.
The rear speakers would be the back of the the X-men's X-Jet, the motors the speakers.
For art work we were planning on paintings of superhero's, logos or even figurine boxes (as we have a few already).

We just need some more ideas to incorporate into the room. What superheroes are a definite MUST have? I am very creative and handy with paint brushes and wood work so anything crafty would be great!
Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

A. I don't know anything about you so I don't know your preferences, but I think you gotta have the Justice League. Their only the most iconic heroes of all time. Maybe a poster or a cardboard figure too be fancy.

Another cool thing would be Captain America's shield as seat decorations, like stools for your bar.

Sorry I'm not a creative person but characters you should have are: Flash, Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Wolverine, Deadpool, Iceman, and SHAZAM

How much class time 2day should be used for explaining a longform BC & the end of Birtherism to schoolchildren?
Q. Should home rooms discuss the long form birth certificate issue so that no child is left birthered? I think this calls for a new Obama Song for your kids to sing in school!!

A. "no child is left birthered"!!!! Priceless!!!

dude, come on. No birther is gonna change it's tune. NOW I wanna see Palins DNA test that Trig is her son!!

Is a video projector a good solution for a home cinema room?
Q. I want to make one of my apartament's rooms a Home Cinema Room. I don't know what to use: a large screen LCD TV, or a video projector. I am tempted to buy a video projector but I'm not sure about the image quality. Are the images created by video projectors good enough to be copared with the ones from an LCD TV? Can you help me by naming some trusting products? Preferably from own experience.

A. Projectors needs a big room and a dark room. Pick up a copy of Home Theater Magazine March issue, it list just about every projectors in the market today. Keep in mind that the lamp for a projector only last about 2,000 hours and replacement lamps can cost you a minimum of $250. You also need a video screen will will cost around $250 to $3,000. I have used a Panasonic projector for many years and is only used to watch blu ray disc movies at night. An entry level projector that is recommend by Home Theater Magazine and cost you $2,300 and the high end to around $10,000 or more. You can now get a 65" Plasma tv from Costco for $2,000, it is a Panasonic Plasma tv. Panasonic is the top quality product when it comes to tvs. Read the reviews on tvs and the pro and con of Plasma and LCD at Home Theater Magazine. Hope this will help you out.

Where to begin the custom-home building process?

Q. Can someone point me to a good consumer-oriented website or offer advice on the steps toward getting a custom home built? My wife and I have a couple lots in mind, we're narrowing down a list of floor plans. We could use some guidance as far what tasks â and in what order â we should be planning for.

A. the process is going to be different for different areas. i would recommend going to amazon.com and buying a few books on how to be your own general contractor, and how to build your own home. (i have i think is called "building your own home on a shoe string") some go into more detail than others. but read a few and get aquainted with some of the terms and such. they will also go through the steps.
but here are the basic steps.
1) find /buy land. make sure it meets all of your requirements, and the local requirements for building. consider a perk test, septic planning, access roads, frontage, any minimum size requirements.
2) site planning. where is the septic located (or are you on town sewer and water). where is the house going, where is the well going (if not on town water) where is the electric going to come in from. and which way will the house be oriented (stake out the corners)
3) excavation and foundation (this will go off the plans that you have decided on) (be prepared for the unexpected, who knows what they will find when they dig)
4) framing
5) skinning (roof and exterior walls and maybe siding, windows) inside is now protected from the elements)
6) electric, plumbing, hvac
7) insulating
8) interior walls, floors, ceilings
9) appliances, painting, finish electrical and plubing fixtures.
10) final walkthrough, cleanup, touchup.

those are the basics

Home building industry price elasticity of demand elastic or inelastic?
Q. I have been searching for an explanation of what this even means and I cannot find anything that is helping me. Can someone please help me. I need to take the home building industry and focus on how it is affected by the economy. I also need to know if it is elastic or inelastic and what the price elasticity of supply for this industry is. I really appreciate any help I can get. Thanks!!!

A. Lets start with what the question means. Then you can apply it to the home building industry. In economics and business studies, the price elasticity of demand (PED) is an elasticity that measures the nature and degree of the relationship between changes in quantity demanded of a good and changes in its price.

For all normal goods and most inferior goods, a price drop results in an increase in the quantity demanded by consumers. The demand for a good is relatively inelastic when the quantity demanded does not change much with the price change. Goods and services for which no substitutes exist are generally inelastic. Demand for an antibiotic, for example, becomes highly inelastic when it alone can kill an infection resistant to all other antibiotics. Rather than die of an infection, patients will generally be willing to pay whatever is necessary to acquire enough of the antibiotic to kill the infection.

Inelastic demand is commonly associated with "necessities," although there are many more reasons a good or service may have inelastic demand other than the fact that consumers may "need" it. Demand for salt, for instance, at its modern levels of supply is highly inelastic not because it is a necessity but because it is such a small part of the household budget. (Technology has increased the supply of salt modernly and reduced its historically high price.) Demand for water, another necessity, is highly inelastic for similar supply side reasons. Demand for other goods, like chocolate, which is not a necessity, can be highly elastic.

Substitution serves as a much more reliable predictor of elasticity of demand than "necessity." For example, few substitutes for oil and gasoline exist, and as such, demand for these goods is relatively inelastic. However, products with a high elasticity usually have many substitutes. For example, potato chips are only one type of snack food out of many others, such as corn chips or crackers, and predictably, consumers have more room to turn to those substitutes if potato chips were to become more expensive.

It may be possible that quantity demanded for a good rises as its price rises, even under conventional economic assumptions of consumer rationality. Two such classes of goods are known as Giffen goods or Veblen goods. Another case is the price inflation during an economic bubble. Consumer perception plays an important role in explaining the demand for products in these categories. A starving musician who offers lessons at a bargain basement rate of $5.00 per hour will continue to starve, but if the musician were to raise the price to $35.00 per hour, consumers may perceive the musician's ability to charge higher prices for lessons as an indication of higher quality, thus increasing the quantity of lessons demanded.

PED is determined by a number of factors that essentially all fall under the umbrella of "choice". By choice we mean the power of choice that the consumer of a given good holds to give up the consumption of said good. The greater this choice the more price elastic the good will be and, by contrast, as the balance of this power falls in favour of the supplier the more inelastic the good will be. This is due to the consumer's "Perceived Value". A good which is difficult to replace or give up consuming will have a higher perceived value than that which is more easily replaced thus the consumer will be willing to pay more for such a good. Perceived Value represents the absolute maximum price a consumer is willing to pay for a good. When the price exceeds this level, the consumer will give up consumption of this good.

Availability of Good Quality Substitutes: Easily substitutable goods will enable buyers to switch to an alternative good and thus such goods will exhibit greater elasticity than goods that do not have substitutes available, ceteris paribus (assuming all other variables are equal). It is important to understand that a given good is in essence unique and thus the comparability of the available substitute(s) in terms of quality to the original good is an important sub-variable. The better the substitute(s) can replace the original good in terms of desirability, affordability, practicality etc. the more elastic the good will become. For example, a commuter taking the train to work could switch to taking the bus if faced with rising train fares. However, this may mean more inconvenience and/or longer journey time for example and thus will form part of his consideration before switching that mode of transport and it may take a certain price difference before he will resort to this option representing the substitute's quality. A contrasting inelastic good would be water which is arguably insubstitutable so a local community faced with rising water costs will be left with little choice but to pay the increased costs forming a price inelastic good.
Whether the good is habit forming or obligatory: Addictive drugs, whether psychologically addictive or physically addictive, and other goods where dependency plays a key role will naturally exhibit inelastic properties. At aggregate level, rising costs of such goods are unlikely to reduce demand significantly. Classic examples of such goods would be alcohol and tobacco or in an extreme case, heroin. A heroin addict will virtually go to any length to achieve the next fix irrespective of cost. Governments often place taxes on these types of goods, namely alcohol, tobacco and fuel because of their highly inelastic demand since consequently such goods are assured revenue generators for the treasury.
The proportion of the consumer's income the good represents: Goods which typically make up a small proportion of people's income will exhibit inelastic qualities. Conversely, goods which form a large proportion of people's income will cause greater responses in demand to comparable % increases or decreases in price. For example, if cinema ticket costs rise by 20%, decreases in demand are unlikely to be pronounced. However a 15% drop in a "luxury" good such as a car or LCD Television changes in demand are likely to be relatively greater.
How closely the good is defined: Taking our example from (2), cigarettes in general are, as discussed, an inelastic good. However a particular brand of cigarettes will exhibit far more elastic properties if its price rises. In general therefore, the exact type of good will affect its PED properties.
How closely the consumer (end-user) is defined?: This is an important factor intrinsically related to most of the preceding variables. "Choice" is very subjective and factors 1,2 and 3 vary relative to the individual consumer because every single consumer can potentially have a different Perceived Value of a good. A good that is easily replaceable or habit forming or expensive for one person may well not be for another and thus how well the consumer is defined will affect the PED. At nationwide level, if the cost of butter rises significantly consumers can choose to consume margarine instead but a shop who makes and sells butter cookies will not have this option and thus the PED will be far more inelastic in the latter case. A driver faced with rising petrol bills may opt to switch to using the train. However an airline company has no choice but to absorb rising fuel costs and will according have a much more inelastic demand curve for essentially the same good.
How closely the time period is defined: Generally the greater the time period, the more possible it may be for a good to be replaced with a substitute. Using home energy as an example, a gas user faced with rising gas bills will unlikely be able to switch to electric alternatives overnight due to possibly contractual tie-ins and time needed to change a stove to electric hob for example. However over three months, a switch is far more viable and the PED will be accordingly more elastic. Likewise, prices are dynamic. Over short time periods, prices of substitutes maybe static, over longer periods, the price of substitutes may drop, making them more appealing. [Puiatti, 18:36 10-Nov-07]

Various research methods are used to calculate price elasticity:

Test markets
Analysis of historical sales data
Conjoint analysis
When the price elasticity of demand for a good is inelastic (|Ed| < 1), the percentage change in quantity demanded is smaller than that in price. Hence, when the price is raised, the total revenue of producers rises, and vice versa.

When the price elasticity of demand for a good is elastic (|Ed| > 1), the percentage change in quantity demanded is greater than that in price. Hence, when the price is raised, the total revenue of producers falls, and vice versa.

When the price elasticity of demand for a good is unit elastic (or unitary elastic) (|Ed| = 1), the percentage change in quantity is equal to that in price.

When the price elasticity of demand for a good is perfectly elastic (Ed is undefined), any increase in the price, no matter how small, will cause demand for the good to drop to zero. Hence, when the price is raised, the total revenue of producers falls to zero. The demand curve is a horizontal straight line. A banknote is the classic example of a perfectly elastic good; nobody would pay £10.01 for a £10 note, yet everyone will pay £9.99 for it.

When the price elasticity of demand for a good is perfectly inelastic (Ed = 0), changes in the price do not affect the quantity demanded for the good. The demand curve is a vertical straight line; this violates the law of demand. An example of a perfectly inelastic good is a human heart for someone who needs a transplant; neither increases nor decreases in price affect the quantity demanded (no matter what the price, a person will pay for one heart but only one; nobody would buy more than the exact amount of hearts demanded, no matter how

Looking to buy high end outdoor furniture...where can I buy this?

Q. I am looking to buy some awesome outdoor furniture (chiase lounges, talbe/chairs, etc.) for my outdoor pool area. I've always loved the outdoor furniture that high end hotels have. Does anyone know where I can buy this stuff?

A. http://www.homedecorators.com/Outdoor/

Outdoor furniture question?
Q. I'm looking for outdoor furniture for the patio and have found a set that I really like and is reasonably priced. It is made of kiln-dried hardwood, not teak, so I am wondering how bad it is to leave some of it outdoors over the winter. We live in CT so winters can be bad here. While I will probably be able to store some of it indoors, I'm just not sure if we have room to move everything indoors for the winter. I would obviously cover everything with furniture covers if left outdoors, but it would likely sit in some snow at some point. Will it be destroyed? I'm going to look for other options if you all think it's a bad idea. Thanks in advance for your advice!
I would take it inside as I know that would extend the life of it, unfortunately, that just isn't an option for me...we just don't have room for it. We are trying to build a shed for some of it but the town is giving us grief...that's a whole other story though...so I'm not counting on that as a storage space as of now.

A. I would go ahead and get the furniture and then coat it with maritime epoxy.

What you do is take two seperate portions and mix them together and apply it with a brush. Once it hardens it forms a clear plastic like layer and will keep all of the moisture and water out. This stuff is used to seal wooden boats so the wood doesn't wear out from being in the water. It is fairly expensive, around $50-$100 a gallon so plan your job accordingly. If you've ever been to a restaurant or bar that has wooden tables with pictures and coins and crap sealed under "plastic like" stuff on the table top, this is what that is. I would recommend using this same stuff on anything wooden that you plan to keep outside year round. Call a few of your local boat dealers/repair places and I'm sure they will be able to lead you where to go for it. I'll paste a link to a PDF that helps explain what I'm talking about.

I want some really comfortable outdoor furniture?
Q. I've been looking at all sorts of home stores at all-weather patio furniture. I have found styles I like, but when I sit on them they just aren't comfortable. Or the style is awful, but seats like a nice indoor leather sofa. Anyone have outdoor furniture that just makes you saw "ahhhh" when you sit down? I use my patio after work to relax and would like an "ahhhh" style couch/love seat and a couple of chairs.

A. Those sets of plastic wicker with cushions made of weather resistant material are pretty good if you find one of good quality but the most comfortable outdoor seating I have found are those round multi position loungers. You can sleep on them. Can be found at most patio furniture stores, at least in my area. Hope you are as fortunate.

What is the best bedding for dwarf hamsters?

Q. I have tried a few different kinds of bedding, but I am not sure what is the best.
I have also heard that cedar and pine shavings are bad for their lungs.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

A. Eco bedding is a shredded paper bedding that lasts longer than just regular shredded paper. They like to tunnel through it too. I use it for my hamsters and gerbils.

What type of bedding do you like best for hamsters?
Q. Has anyone tried the shaved pine for hamster bedding? I found some but it looks like pine dust instead of shavings? What do you think?

A. i don't understand why people are getting thumbs down on the use of cedar and pine, some people like to argue "oh, it has never hurt my hamsters, and its fine for you too!" this is completely wrong, cedar and pine releases toxins into the air when urinated on, and over time cause respiratory problems, and if long enough, death, its so sad but its so preventable, you should never purchase cedar or pine wood shavings or dust, any type of dust shouldnât be used because it gets in the hamsterâs eyes, and can cause repiratory problems

the ONLY wood shavings you should be using are aspen wood shavings, they are safe for the hammy, and absorb odor fairly well, its also fairly cheap, the only downside to this is that sometimes there can be a particularly sharp piece, and can cause cuts on your hammyâs feet =\

my favorite type of bedding by far is carefresh, it is the best as absorbing smell, making a soft bed, and it comes in bigger pieces so it wonât get kicked out of the wire cage as much as other bedding will, the only downside is that it can be a tad expensive, but its really worth it

yesterdayâs news is also a very good bedding, it is made of recycled newspaper, it is soft, absorbent, and has other good characteristics like carefresh, downside being that it isnât as widely available as carefresh is, and i have yet to find it in a pet store near me

timothy hay is another bedding widely used, its probably the cheapest bedding to buy, but I personally donât like timothy hay, it doesnât help with smell, it is ALWAYS getting kicked out of the cage, and the sharp edges of the hay can cut the hamsters feet

there are also pellet forms of bedding, I have never used this kind, but its fairly inexpensive, plus it is very good at absorbing odors, the only thing i can think about it that would be bad, is it probably would get kicked out the cage constantly because of its small size

oh btw, donât use newspaper either, the ink on the paper is bad for the hamsters if they ingest it, some hamsters donât have a problem, but most die from ink poisoning, so donât run the risk with your hamster and donât use newspaper

EDIT: THANK YOU hamsterzgurl for just copying my answer, thats really mature, and is against the rules

At what age can I start butting ârealâ bedding on my 2 year olds bed?
Q. I hate that I do not have ârealâ bedding on my 2 year olds bed yet? When Can or should I start doing this? I would love to go in and see a bed that is made up and not just a crib sheet.
And I am not sure that they will even sleep under the sheets!

A. Like yesterday :) Two is usually the age where they can start using real bedding so have at it!

What are the most sought after type of wood in Australia?

Q. I reside in a country in Asia which is rich in its natural revenue and I have a wood manufacturing business. I'm looking to expand it to Australia via exportation and I need to know what the market demands nowadays in Australia - for furniture, building, whatever it is - I heard that the most sought after right now is Red Oak for flooring is that right? What other type of wood is popular over there?

And any legal requirements, unwritten rules among manufacturer/exporter, ANY info would be very much appreciated! :)
Thank you

A. Have a look at companies like Bunnings and Colli they are builders merchants that stock timber.

Jarra is popular in western Australia but WA is also the only place on earth it grows so unless you can sell ice to eskimos..

Can you recommend a good interior designer to do a 30-sq condo in the Philippines?
Q. I need an interior designer for a 30-sq condo. in Quezon City Philippines. We have a new baby, need a working little kitchen, and a nice bathroom. I prefer Japanese design, minimal furniture, built-in cabinets. Interested parties can reply to this question or email me:tometooo@yahoo.com. Many thanks.

A. I am a decorator and home stager and it would be my pleasure to design your new room. I can even give you testimonials from my clients. All you have to do is pay my air fare round trip. I can also work with email and digital photos. Feel free to contact me at info@divadecors.com

How can I know if I'll be a good Interior Designer?
Q. I really want to be a good Interior Designer but I keep getting scared that I won't be able to do it. There are many things on my side such as creativity, good taste, like to research products and have an interest in all things related to it (even learning some electrical, plumbing, construction, and furniture building). But I think I can be a little ADD and miss details which I know are important. I'm going to try some medication for this but it still scares me. Also I can be impulsive. Any suggestions? How will I know if I'll be a good Designer? Also how would you recommend getting into the field. I'm in school for my ID Associates Degree but would love advice on how to get in there. (No furniture sales store rep!) If you were to hire an intern what would you look for? Thanks

A. Are you able to envision the finished project before you begin? People who are creative enough to have a vision for their work seem to make the best Interior Designers. However, you have to be practical enough to integrate your client's financial preferences for spending and also, you have to take into account practical considerations like natural lighting, color & style preferences, and the intended use of the space. You can be the most creative visionary, but if your client thinks it is just impractical, you won't get much return business.

How to drill a screw hole in ceramic floor tile?

Q. We just installed ceramic floor tile. We removed a set of bifold doors and will be replacing them with by-pass doors. Fot the bypass doors, a center guide for the doors needs to be attached in the center on the tile floor.

What type of drill bit? What size? One slightly smaller than screw like drilling wood or not? Any helpful hints, tips also appreciated! Thanks!

A. From your hardware store get plastic screw plugs to suit the screw you want to fit. get the corresponding masonery bit also get a smaller one to drill first. It is also easier yo drill a small hole and make it the right size than ues the right size and make it bigger.
Don't use a nail and a hammer as mentioned eairler as you may eaisly crack the tile if it is not glued to the surface fully

Is there likely to be a problem if I use ceramic floor-tile adhesive to lay porcelain floor-tiles?
Q. I bought a huge tub of Tile-A-Floor Ceramic floor-tile adhesive. My wife then changed her mind about the floor-tiles and the ones we have now are ceramic. I can't get my money back on the adhesive. Would I encounter problems using the adhesive intended for ceramic tiles to lay a porcelain tile floor?

A. You may..Since ceramic is more pourous than porcelain it may not grip as well. A latex modified thin set is the way to go.The newer mastics stay a bit pliable and since you ll be walking on them I never ;ike to use a pliable glue on floor tiles.GL

How soon after laying ceramic floor tile can you apply grout?
Q. I'll be putting ceramic floor tile in a bathroom today. How long after laying it should I wait to put in the grout?

A. Under normal heat and humidity conditions you can grout tomorrow as long as you don t finish late tonight.

Who can I contact to do maintenance on foreclosed properties in southeastern michigan?

Q. Who can I contact to do maintenance on foreclosed properties in southeastern michigan?

I own a lawn maintenance and home maintenance (inside and outside) and would want to work on these homes to maintain for the lender, realtor, bank etc.

But I am unable to finds out who to contact, does anyone have and leads that I can geta hold of?

A. This can be complex. In many cases, the lender hires a loss mitigation company to handle their foreclosures. This can be subbed out to yet another company. From my friends that work in foreclosures, there can be about 5 companies involved in financial decisions on these properties.

Your best bet is market yourself to Realtors who will ultimately list these properties. Most have weekly meetings, ask if you can make a short presentation at a meeting. Or get some inexpensive flyers printed up with pricing or information about services you offer and drop a few at every RE office in your area.

Do men make a naturally better stay at home parent in this day and age?
Q. In the modern workforce, women seem more suited to the office routine, social scene and nature of much of the repetetive work. Men today, while staying home are more apt to keep the children active, can become adept at most housekeeping skills, and perform other home maintenance duties that women typically refuse to do. Also, in most families, fathers handle most of the discipline. Should women now work to support a husband and children?

A. Like Helena said, natural roles are myths. You should figure what your strong points are and apply them in life. Some women are more suited to be a stay-at-home mom and some are not. Same goes for men. Some are suited to be a stay-at-home dad while some are not. And some men shouldn't get married or father children at all. Vasectomy is the best option for them.

How can I refinish my bedroom furniture?

Q. My bedroom furniture is worth about $5000, it came from my grandmas, it is all over 50 years old. It is called Hitchcock furniture. Tips or advice on all steps to refinish it? Help please!

A. If the furniture is solid wood, stained and varnished, you can strip the varnish off with paint stripper. Follow the directions on the can.

If the pieces are stained, the stain will remain. It is soaked into the wood. You can now apply a new coat of varnish, water base poly or tung oil (easiest).

If you do not like the stain color, you can paint the furniture. All poly or varnish should be removed. Prime first with a good quality primer. Get it tinted to 1/4 the color of the paint you plan on using if the paint is a dark color. Otherwise use the primer as is.

Then apply a couple of coats of the finish color.
Satin latex for low sheen.
semi-gloss latex for more sheen.

My opinion on old furniture. It if good quality, solid wood, I wood remove the varnish down to the stained wood. then rub on a couple coats of tung oil. Preserves the wood great, shows all the grain, easy to use, no mistakes.

If the furniture has some veneer on it, thin pieces of good wood, you will have to be careful with the refinishing as you could easily cause these thin pieces to lift or if sanded, sand too heavily and sand right thru them.

To paint, you really should remove the doors, hinges, etc to get a smoother job and buy a good quality brush too.
It really makes a difference in the finish looking good or cheap.
A 2" brush should coats $8-10. Home D or Lowes.

What furniture maker makes solid wood bedroom furniture?
Q. I'm looking for furniture makers/brands that make solid wood bedroom furniture without veneers, and preferably ones that use old-fashioned carpentry techniques like dovetails, mortise and tendon, etc... Also, on another note, is Broyhill a good furniture company? My sister is looking into getting the Fontana collection for her room and I wanted to check that out for her. I'm still trying to see if I can find solid hardwood furniture before I give up and go with something else that uses veneers. Thanks.

A. A-America has really nice solid wood furniture. We just bought a bedroom set made from New Zealand Pine....it is very nice and reasonable. www.a-america.com

Where can I find good quality bedroom furniture for cheap?
Q. I'm getting some new bedroom furniture, but I don't have that much money to spend. Any suggestions for stores or sites? Thanks :)

A. Someone suggested thrift stores, and to that, I'd add consignment stores that carry furniture. Sometimes you can find nice pieces at Goodwill or Salvation Army. Someone suggested Big Lots, and they are worth a look, too.

Bear in mind that your furniture does not have to "match" - it doesn't have to be a set. For instance, you could have a wrought iron or a wicker headboard ( these are pretty inexpensive), an inexpensive round table covered with a tablecloth for a night stand/bedside table, and a dresser or chest of drawers, small chair, etc. Pier One has some cute wicker chairs that are reasonably priced.

If you are handy at refinishing furniture, you could pull together a shabby-chic look with used pieces that you strip and paint ivory or white.

You do not have to spend a lot of money to have an attractive room. Your accessories will make all the difference.

What Color is most popular on home exteriors?

Q. I am a Local Painting contractor in corona ca, and I want to Know what color or types of colors are most appealing to home owners when painting there homes exterior?

A. Most popular I think it white/beige siding, or brick.

I have noticed large stars on home exteriors. What do they stand for? Is it like the Mason symbol?
Q. These stars have been painted different colors on different homes. They are five pointed stars and I only see one on a home's exterior. My mother thinks that it means "Order of the Eastern Star." Is this true?

A. I know what you are talking about. I have seen them as well. I am a Mason, and although the women's Masonic group called the order of the Eastern Star uses a star symbol, the symbols you are referring to are actually North American Barn Stars, originally hung on barns and houses by the Pennsylvania Dutch and Amish for good luck, and have no Masonic connection. They have become popular as a decoration, even for the non-Amish.

Please feel free to contact me with any other questions.

What website can I upload my own photo to and choose paint colors?
Q. I'm trying to choose colors for my homes' exterior and I don't want to use the photos that they give me. For example Lowes allows me to use a paint tool on their website with given photos, but no option to use my own.

A. Behr Paint's website will allow you to do this for $4.95. You choose your color first, and then click "preview" and then it will give you the option of uploading your own photo.

You can also post a photo of your house on Roomvues.com. You can either tell them specific colors that you would like to see or get color suggestions from them, and they will photoshop them onto your house for you. It's free:

I'm a 21 year old married girl and i want bathroom design ideas haha! Young fun and no paint?

Q. I like pin up girls and vintage art. I'm looking for some good artwork or ideas, bathroom stuff that i could buy... I don't want search ideas, or keywords to look up ... i just want person opinions and ideas that they think would work well.

A. K Mart I have seen has some really cool vintage paintings and things like that. I saw some that had a 50s girl on it with a surfboard and a coca cola. It looked like an old advertisement. Then there were ones that had paintings of Elvis in different locations and then other ones that were old advertisements for different products from the 50s and 60s. Like laundry soap, Oscar Mayer, etc. They were all pretty cheap and were pretty small so you could get a bunch that would make your bathroom look unique.

How do you find out what paint color was used here?
Q. http://www.besthomedesigns.org/trends-on-modern-bathroom-design-remodeling/nice-modern-bathroom-ideas/

Or does anyone know something similar to this color or what it is?

A. Answer above is good. I would call this color slate blue. http://www.computerhope.com/htmcolor.htm

what color is good for a bedroom and a bathroom that matches?
Q. The carpet in the bedroom is, dark blue.. and I have no clue what color to paint the room. I want the bathroom to match my bedroom but yet be cute and a little girly.. what color should I do? Im planing on getting shower curtains and rugs to match the paint in the bathroom with designs.

A. Fushia with blue looks girly and glamorous. I would go bold with hot pink/fuschia on the walls, or at least 1 wall if you don't want it so dramatic, and the other walls white; and an area rug in hot pink on top of your blue rug. And accessorize bedroom with those 2 colors. The bathroom, fushia and white, or blue and white.

Regarding organizational architecture, why has tipping emerged as a way to compensate waiters?

Q. In terms of the organizational architecture, there seems to be three aspects of it, decision rights, rewarding individuals, and evaluating their performance. I am having troubling applying this concept to compensating waiters. I would think that it has emerged to allow customers to measure and evaluate a waiter's performance and service, while providing them with an incentive...but I am not sure.

A. I am not quite sure myself but I used to waitress and tips are highly appreciated. Most waiters and waitresses only make $2.13/hr. and by law that is all they can make hourly. This leaves them to rely on tips to survive. I think that only the customer can decide what kind of service they got from a waiter/waitress and it is basically been left up to them to decide what they earned for their time. I think it is supposed to motivate the waitress/waiter to do her best with each customer as to earn the most for her time. However there are flaws. There are always flaws. 1) Some waitresses/waiters just don't care. I have seen servers that still just don't put in the effort and only do the minimal to get through their day. I have seen some that just treat the customer like dirt. 2) The customer is NOT always right. I have seen customers that got excellent service and either don't have the cash or are cheap and obviously did not tip the right amount for the service they recieved. Now if you don't have the cash, I personally think you shouldn't be going out to eat. If you are cheap, don't go to a place where you have to tip. Some customers are just rude, leaving a penny is a sure fire way to quickly anger a server especially if they gave great service. Now I am not sure what works for you, but as for myself and being a waitress in the past, I choose to tip 25-30% Most people tip under 10% and the people that do tip the norm of 15% are great but most servers bust their butts for minimal money. I tip 25% for good service and 30% for great service. I have tipped 100% for flawless service before too. It really is up to you what you decide to tip and if you decide to tip. Just take in to consideration a few things the next time you get waited on. Are they friendly? polite? helpful? knowledgable? timely? do they refill your drinks? take your empty plates out of your way? and just all around make sure you have everything you need? Because our job as a server is to basically pamper the customer while they are out from their home whether it is a low-priced diner or an expensive well known restaurant. I hope this helps. Take care and enjoy your dining experience.

What is the best type of laptop for an architecture major?
Q. I'm going into architecture this fall, and I have no idea what laptop I would need. I have yet to check the college's specs, but what's a general preference of architecture majors? PC or Mac? And what specifications? Thanks.

A. Go with your school's specifications. They may even ask you to purchase the computer (and the accompanying software) from a company of their choosing.

Most architecture students use PCs (AutoCAD has not yet been released on a MAC). If you will be doing heavy 3d rendering, drafting, and processing, you will want decent processing power, a really good graphics card, and plenty of memory. Most students rely on a desktop for their rendering needs in studio, but also have a laptop to so they can work at home, play music, or work on other things while the desktop is processing a rendering.

Good luck! Check with your school first!!

What's the difference between Pre-Fabricated Architecture from Portable Architecture?
Q. I'm an architecture student from Manila, researching for Pre-Fabricated Housing, while i'm confused with prefabrication from portable architecture. Please help me... i'm planning this to be my thesis topic...

A. Broadly speaking, Pre-Fabricated Architecture is a structure that is largely fabricated off-site, often in a modular fashion, and then assembled / finished on-site.

Portable Architecture is any structure be easily moved (relatively speaking) to another site, either by an intrinsic transportation method (think mobile home on wheels) or by partially disassembling and then reassembling later (see OMA's prada transformer).

Hope this helps. Best of luck.

I Removed my ceramic tiles now how do you get rid of the left over grout?

Q. I Removed my ceramic tiles now how do you get rid of the left over grout? that was underneath the tiles?

A. Thats not grout under the tile. It is a product called thinset and the only way to get it off is to chip it out with hammer and chisel. Dont use a grinder as this will cause severe damage to the underlayment.

How to remove the ceramic tiles on dry wall in the bath room?
Q. The walls in the bath room of my house are with different ceramic tiles. May be the previous owner changed the tub & the walls around it but not the walls in other parts of the bath room. I checked with the ceramic tile shops & am able to buy the same tiles as those around the tub. Is it advisable for me to remove the tiles on the dry wall beyond the tub & install matching new tiles without replacing the dry wall? How to remove the tiles? What details I have to pay attention to?

A. You can carefully remove the tile on dry wall by using a flat pry bar or wide flat chisel. Do not pry on the tiles you can go right through the dry wall. Get behind them and pull or use a hammer to get behind them with a flat bar or chisel and take them off.
You will pull some hunks and tear paper, most of these can be repaired and gone over with new tile. You ll have to do some patching and sealing of old paper ( just primer paint).
The other choice is to cut the dry wall out and replace with a 1/2" cement board, dry wall or a product called Denshield.
The use of a cement board or the Denshield is suggested if any of this area is in a water area.

What is the easiest home design software to use?

Q. My 12 yr old son wants to be an arcitect and we have played around with some of the less expensive ($9.99) home design software, but they seem a little hard to get started with. Anyone know if a very simple one to purchase? We were thinking of the Better Homes & Gardens series, maybe find one on e-bay..

A. Google SketchUp is free. If your 12yo is anything like my 10yo he should be able to become proficient at that pretty quickly. My son goofs around with my AutoCAD which is NOT inexpensive nor would I have thought it easy, (considering what I charge for drafting)!
You can get it here.....

is there an inexpensive or free home design software out there for a normal homeowner?
Q. its just that I want to play around with some home design ideas with my house for a small addition, & I need some kind of basic program to use. Thanks!

A. I know they can be hard to find. I think Lowes has one on their website, I used it for a kitchen once, but it takes some patience. I have always done my design ideas in The Sims 2, because it is much more user friendly and quick. I never really get around to playing the actual game though. The only problem with this is sometimes the location of things isn't exactly where you want it, but it's a good way to get the idea of what you want to do.

what is the difference between interior design and professional home design?
Q. i am interested in becoming an architect. i know what kind of architecture i want to be. but i dont know what its call. i just want to draw a single homes w/ rooms, bathroom, living room and ext from foundation up. what is it call? interior design or professional home design?

A. That is called an architect.
An interior designer is a licensed professional (as is architect) who is the type of person who helps out on the show trading spaces. They "design interiors." They will usually be knowledgeable in fabric, color, material, and geometric organization.
A professional home designer is usually a person who is not licensed or registered and draws up house plans. They call themself home designer because they are not licensed and not allowed to use architect.
An architect is a registered professional licensed to practice architecture and design buildings (including homes)
