How do you make the wires safe before you put a blanking plate on when you remove wall lights.?

Q. We want to remove 2 wall lights, but we do not want to permanently remove the wires, so we will use blanking plates, but are not sure how you make the wires safe first. Does anyone have suggestions please?

A. You don't say where you are. If you are in the UK you will need to use connector blocks (min 5amp rating) as we stopped using screw on type connections, such as wire nuts /midgets, many years ago. Connector blocks are widely available from diy shops.
Don't rely on turning the wall switch off to make the cables dead as there may still be live cables present. It is probably simpler for you to turn off the main switch (Usually the biggest switch at your fuseboard) After making sure that the cables are definitely dead, put the cables into your connector in exactly the same order as they were connected in the fitting. ie if a black and red cable were connected together in the fitting they must be connected together when you reconnect them. Many people make the mistake of not noting how it came apart. Put all your earth cables together and after gently tugging at all the cables to make sure it doesn't fall apart tape the connectors up before pushing back into the wall and covering with your blank plate.
You may be lucky and find that on removing the old lights you have existing connectors you can retain. In which case visually check there are no loose strands of copper after disconnecting the light and simply tape the connectors up.
If in any doubt of how to make it safe don't attempt it yourself, get someone in. Electricity kills.

Can I use an AC wall light dimmer as a 12V voltage regulator?
Q. Hi. I need to reduce the voltage of a DC power supply from 16V (external laptop battery) down to 12V so I can use it as a power supply for my other 12 volts gadgets. Can I use an AC wall light dimmer for this? I've read that this works by reducing voltage so an incandescent lamp can be dimmed. I'd like to know your thoughts if it will work for my purpose.

A. You need to learn what regulation means. You might get it to reduce the voltage but that is NOT regulating it.

What type of window treatment should I use for sliding glass doors?

Q. I want modern and sophisticated window treatments for sliding glass doors. I have been able to pull most of my decor together, but I cannot figure out the best way to cover my sliding glass doors. They are approximately 7' tall x 10' wide. I enjoy the light that comes in during the day, but wish for privacy at night.

A. Because 10' is a lot of window space, you may want to consider a window treatment that is simple and effective without being fussy to use and always looks fresh.

I would install a wooden drapery rod 5" above the uppermost molding with a center support and install the brackets 12" beyond the sides of the sliders. Do not use a skimpy rod or it will look out of proportion to the sliders. The reason to have the rod extended beyond the width of the sliders is so that when the drapery is opened, there is some stack space for the drapery in order to allow more sunlight into the room. By hanging the rod higher than the window, you are adding height to the room and also leaving wall space so the drapery hardware can be seen instead of being distracted by the molding.

A sophisticated window treatment is one that is timeless and looks as good open as it does closed. May I suggest panels with either a box pleat header or a pinch pleat header or a goblet pleat header -- all of which should be hung on the rod from wooden drapery rings. I would use two large panels, one on the left and one on the right. I suggest a wooden rod and wooden rings because metal drapery hardware makes a horrible and annoying noise and the telescoping rods always catch on the rings as you attempt to open and close the drapery. Use drapery wands (long dowel like 'sticks') that you pull to draw the drapes open and closed as not to tug on the fabric and leave stains on the fabric from oils in your hands.

Traverse rods are an effective way to open and close a slider window treatment; however, you will see the ugly utilitarian rod when the drapery are opened. Not sophisticated enough for your taste, I'd say.

Do not select a printed fabric as most people tend to regret a large space with that much busy. Instead try to select a solid fabric with a texture or a tone on tone print or perhaps an embroidered swirl design to keep the eyes moving. Love the fabric you pick and do not settle for anything you have to think twice about because after you buy 21 yards of fabric and lining plus the labor for custom drapery, you do not want to regret your choice.

I hope my words have been helpful.

What would be the cost of getting custom window treatments done?
Q. I have a window (or set of windows) in my family room that takes up a whole wall. I don't have the exact measurements, but it's close to 84" high and 108" long. I want to get curtain/drapes/window treatments (whatever they are called) made. I know that a major cost factor will be type of fabric that I select plus hardware, but can someone give me a price range so I can start budgeting? Just to make it easy, let say I select a fabric that is $20 per yard.

A. The best thing for you to do would be to:
#1 get the exact measurements for your window.
#2 pick a company/designer that makes custome window treatments

They will then be able to help you pick what's best. They can price it out and you can contact them once you have the money.

Any ideas on how to come up with window treatments fast and cheap for my new house that has tons of windows?
Q. It is an old cottage with lots of charm. I plan on painting it all light, and sanding the wood floors light, so I want the curtains to be light too.

I need ideas for window treatments that are affordable, but creative. This house is covered with lots of windows, and I don't know what I'm gonna do.

A. You know how people throw the sheets up well i have revised it since it is a cottage style Sheet's are a wonderful window treatment amd they already have a slot for the rod this is what i did for the mean time and the mean time is been like 5 years already ..lol .....UKAY i bought some cheap sheets at a discount store with flowers and plaid bright soft colors. then i went to my local harware store bought some dowels (round wood rods)usally 3-4' tall 5/8-1/2" and if i had a larger window i used a closet rod and cup hooks to hold them and this is the afforable but creative treatment. In the kitchen i divided the window and covered half and the other half i draped the top rod so i could have some sunlight in. Oh yes i used material glue for the edges. I didn't want to sew. It was fun easy and afforable and I am into victorian look so it was chic to me .

Does a bedroom have to have a window in PA?

Q. I live in an apartment that was listed as a 2 bedroom. One of the bedrooms does not have a window. Is there supposed to be a window for emergencies or ventilation? Does anyone know the laws for this sort of thing?

A. You do need to have ventalation in a beedroom. But more important you need egress. At least one window in each bedroom must be of sufficient size to permit the occupants to escape a fire and also to allow a fully outfitted firefighter to enter.

An egress window must satisfy all four Internatioinal Residential Code (IRC) criteria:

Minimum width of opening: 20 in.
Minimum height of opening: 24 in.
Minimum net clear opening: 5.7 sq. ft. (5.0 sq. ft. for ground floor).
Maximum sill height above floor: 44 in.

So if it doesn't ahve this it's not a bedroom. A simple call to your local bulding department can confirm this.

The question you ask is like asking what would a blue car cost in Newport Beach, California Santa Monica, California Wilmington, North Carolina. 1 story, 1.5, story, 2-story, tri-level, one story with basement 1.5 story with basement ect. 1 car garage, 2 or 3 car garage, what size lot? What age? 1300 sf 4-bed, or 2000 sf 4-bedroom and everthing in between and larger, 1 bath, 1.5, 1.75, 2, 3 bath, what condition? if its a older home, what degree of updating has been done? How can I make my bedroom lighter without a window?
Q. I haven't a window in my bedroom, and I was wondering what I could do to make the room brighter. I'm about to paint the walls a bright white to see if that helps at all. I've used the brightest light bulbs I could find, and they seem to make the room look yellow in some way. I only have one light in the center of the room.

A. First, it isn't a true bedroom without a window, and will not add any value to the house. I don't know if your living in a closet but put a window in not only for light but to add value to the house.

Second, not only will a lighter wall color help but also a lighter floor covering like a carpet. If you have a dark one or a dark wood floor it will absorb the light.

Hope this helps.

How long do i keep my turtles lamps on for?

How tall should bedroom table lamps be?
Q. I have great table lamps in the livingroom which is in the process of being redone. Would the lamps be too tall for the bedroom? Is there a formula of height requirements for table lamps? For a swag over the kitchen table, what is the clearance?

A. The lamps are not required to be any height...just make sure they are proportioned correctly with your bed post...lamps that are seen as too tall are normally those that are taller than the bed posts!

how best can I use floor lamps to light living room and bedroom with no ceiling lamp?
Q. I am moving into an older apartment and there are no ceiling lamps in the bedroom and living room. I bought a floor lamp from Walmart and 75W 'daylight' energy saving bulb from Home Depot. I find the lighting dull and not good enough to read with-I'm a student. This is really bothering me, how best can I light the rooms using lamps and have adequate light in them? I want them well illuminated and don't want to ruin my eyes either.

A. I had the same problem with lighting.
I ended up putting a big floor lamp in one corner and little lamps in the other corners on my dresser and night table.

Is there a way to coverup the harmful effects of exterior paint on interior walls?

Q. I painted my grandson's room with left over exterior paint to save $ and thought it would be more durable. Because of the strong smell it got me thinking it could possibly be harmful and so looked up info on the internet. I feel like such an idiot! Could I possibly cover it up with paneling?

A. At this point I think the best thing to do would be to leave it and make sure that you get good ventilation in the room for a while. The odor is from the solvents in the paint which will eventually evaporate. If you tried to cover them up, all you would be doing is slowing them down and spreading out the exposure over a longer period of time. Admittedly, the exposure at any given time would be lower but you would probably want to do something about the ventilation over that time period as well so it would only be making this take longer. If it's possible to keep the window open or at least cracked and run a fan blowing out the window, it will draw the odor out. If you have the option for your grandson not to sleep in there until the solvent odor is gone, that would be the safe thing to do.

As for calling ourself an idiot....don't. You are certianly not the first person to bring up this exact thing on this mesage board. You made a mistake but it shouldn't be a problem in the long run.

When is it too cold outside to do exterior painting?
Q. How cold does it have to be for the temperature to affect the drying process of exterior paint? It is supposed to be in the fifties this weekend and I want to do some outside painting, but the temps are going to drop back in to the thirties again. Should I just wait til spring? If I paint now, what could happen to my paint job if it gets too cold?

A. I would wait till spring. The temp needs to stay above 50 for at least 48 hours straight for the paint to dry properly.

How to deal with small hole in wood when doing exterior paint?
Q. Hi, I am doing exterior paint by myself, paint wood trim, door. In some place I find there are small (very small) holes. How should I deal with it? Leave it there? Or use something to fill it before I paint? Thanks!

A. I would use an auto body filler for an exterior door. You can find it at any hardware store like a home depot or Lowe's. You can put more hardener than the directions say. This will make it dry faster and allow you to keep working. Careful not to add to much hardener because you will make the filler week and will cause it to fall out. You can sand the extra off with some 80 or 120 grit sandpaper. It comes in two different sizes. One gallon and quart size. From the size of your project a quart will be plenty enough. Good Luck!

Q. i live in australia and paint here is very expensive compared to back home in america. I have alot of exterior painting to do some on stucco and some on metal. I know that some people know how to make paints them selves and i would like to find a recipe for paint please

A. with the word good you can't.

Can exterior paint be used to paint an interior room?
Q. I was wondering if I could use exterior paint to paint my son's bedroom? I want something that will be very durable. If I can't use exterior paint to paint his room then I would like to know why I can't and a suggestion for something else that can hold up to being in a child's bedroom. Thanks!

A. exterior paint is a bad idea. it is very durable for outside, but stays much softer than interior paint, so that it will give/flex with the expansion/contraction of your exterior siding. also, it will smell much worse when applied. the epoxy idea that someone suggested is really stupid. you cant put epoxy over regular paint, it will lift/melt the latex paint that is on the walls. bad bad bad idea!!!
my solution:
first: quality if key to a good paint job
use benjamin moore paint, it is very good. i would suggest either an eggshell finish, which is more durable than a flat. as an alternative, the best, most durable, washable paint you can buy is a product called Regal Matte finish. it is a scrubbable flat finish that will be more durable than any other paint on teh market. it is expensive, but VERY good. you can get the regal matte finish at your local benjamin moore retailer. find one at http://www.benjaminmoore.com

What if I use exterior paint on the interior?
Q. I have some leftover exterior paint and I'm thinking of painting the inside of my garage with it. Is it okay to do that? Please explain.

A. It's okay to use exterior paint on the interior, but not vice versa. Exterior paint is more weather- and wear-resistant. Won't hurt a thing to use it indoors.

who to go to for a design of a Bathroom ?

Q. Who or what is the proper place to go to when you have a bathroom design and you want it to come into reality and not just an idea?
Oh no, I mean I have a bathroom design and I want to bring the idea to a place, I haver an invention is more like it. =).

A. Your local plumbing supplier, should have many bathroom designs set up. The average bathroom is 5'x7'. How ever you can make it bigger and add what you want.

I'm a 21 year old married girl and i want bathroom design ideas haha! Young fun and no paint?
Q. I like pin up girls and vintage art. I'm looking for some good artwork or ideas, bathroom stuff that i could buy... I don't want search ideas, or keywords to look up ... i just want person opinions and ideas that they think would work well.

A. K Mart I have seen has some really cool vintage paintings and things like that. I saw some that had a 50s girl on it with a surfboard and a coca cola. It looked like an old advertisement. Then there were ones that had paintings of Elvis in different locations and then other ones that were old advertisements for different products from the 50s and 60s. Like laundry soap, Oscar Mayer, etc. They were all pretty cheap and were pretty small so you could get a bunch that would make your bathroom look unique.

How do you find out what paint color was used here?
Q. http://www.besthomedesigns.org/trends-on-modern-bathroom-design-remodeling/nice-modern-bathroom-ideas/

Or does anyone know something similar to this color or what it is?

A. Answer above is good. I would call this color slate blue. http://www.computerhope.com/htmcolor.htm

What is the best bedding for dwarf hamsters?

Q. I have tried a few different kinds of bedding, but I am not sure what is the best.
I have also heard that cedar and pine shavings are bad for their lungs.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

A. Eco bedding is a shredded paper bedding that lasts longer than just regular shredded paper. They like to tunnel through it too. I use it for my hamsters and gerbils.

What type of bedding do you like best for hamsters?
Q. Has anyone tried the shaved pine for hamster bedding? I found some but it looks like pine dust instead of shavings? What do you think?

A. i don't understand why people are getting thumbs down on the use of cedar and pine, some people like to argue "oh, it has never hurt my hamsters, and its fine for you too!" this is completely wrong, cedar and pine releases toxins into the air when urinated on, and over time cause respiratory problems, and if long enough, death, its so sad but its so preventable, you should never purchase cedar or pine wood shavings or dust, any type of dust shouldnât be used because it gets in the hamsterâs eyes, and can cause repiratory problems

the ONLY wood shavings you should be using are aspen wood shavings, they are safe for the hammy, and absorb odor fairly well, its also fairly cheap, the only downside to this is that sometimes there can be a particularly sharp piece, and can cause cuts on your hammyâs feet =\

my favorite type of bedding by far is carefresh, it is the best as absorbing smell, making a soft bed, and it comes in bigger pieces so it wonât get kicked out of the wire cage as much as other bedding will, the only downside is that it can be a tad expensive, but its really worth it

yesterdayâs news is also a very good bedding, it is made of recycled newspaper, it is soft, absorbent, and has other good characteristics like carefresh, downside being that it isnât as widely available as carefresh is, and i have yet to find it in a pet store near me

timothy hay is another bedding widely used, its probably the cheapest bedding to buy, but I personally donât like timothy hay, it doesnât help with smell, it is ALWAYS getting kicked out of the cage, and the sharp edges of the hay can cut the hamsters feet

there are also pellet forms of bedding, I have never used this kind, but its fairly inexpensive, plus it is very good at absorbing odors, the only thing i can think about it that would be bad, is it probably would get kicked out the cage constantly because of its small size

oh btw, donât use newspaper either, the ink on the paper is bad for the hamsters if they ingest it, some hamsters donât have a problem, but most die from ink poisoning, so donât run the risk with your hamster and donât use newspaper

EDIT: THANK YOU hamsterzgurl for just copying my answer, thats really mature, and is against the rules

At what age can I start butting ârealâ bedding on my 2 year olds bed?
Q. I hate that I do not have ârealâ bedding on my 2 year olds bed yet? When Can or should I start doing this? I would love to go in and see a bed that is made up and not just a crib sheet.
And I am not sure that they will even sleep under the sheets!

A. Like yesterday :) Two is usually the age where they can start using real bedding so have at it!

How should i decorate other girls doors as a prank in a hotel?

Q. This weekend,a bunch of girls from my church on going on the revolve tour and we all stay in different hotel rooms.Every year me and the other girls in my room decorate other girls doors and i need some ideas on what to do.

A. whatever you put on the door make sure it can easily come off without damaging the door. you dont want to get busted for that lol. another thing to make sure you dont do is write anybodys name who is in the room onto the door. it is just plain unsafe. but i think its always fun to cut up a bunch of paper, or get confetti, put it in a small paper type box and secure it onto something with a string. tie the string to the door handle, and when they open the door the paper box will drop the confetti. another fun thing to do is streamers (on the roll) you can put them all over in front of the door by taping them to the door frame. then when they try to come out of the room they are trapped in by streamers. have fun

How can i persuade my dad to decorate my room before my birthday (two weeks time) rather than after?
Q. My birthday is in two weeks and i would like my room decorated, i am having one wall wallpapered and the other painted creamy/whity, and the wallpaper i'm going to paint on top with a nice teal. I'm going to get cream carpet, new curtains, new bin, new chair, new bean bag! But how can i persuade my dad to decorate my room before my birthday comes rather than after my birthday!

A. Show him this
Dear Sir, I feel I must put pen to paper to say how in this day and age it is so gratifying to hear a young person speak in such loving caring tones about their lovely Father.I dont think she could have painted a nicer picture of you even if you decide to decorate her room before her birthday which would be fantastic. You sir are a national treasure (or will be if you bring forward the decorating)
Best wishes

Is Home Office Furniture Tax Deductible? If so, how much is deductible and what does that really mean?

Q. My home office is based out of Texas.

A. Home office furniture would be tax deductible, as long as you use it only for your business. If you bought a computer for use for the business, a desk to put the computer on, a lamp to shine light on the desk and the computer, a phone line for the computer to connect to the internet, these would all be deductible Home Office Furniture as long as you used them 100% for the business. If you did then 100% of what you paid for them is deductible as a business expense in the year you bought them. The only question is though, is your home office part of a Schedule C business? If so then you can list all the assets on Form 4562 and take section 179 depreciation on them. That will let you write them totally off in the year you bought them. If you have a home office as part of your job requirement, then you would still report the assets on Form 4562 and take section 179 depreciation, but the depreciation would flow through to Form 2106 - Employee Business Expenses, which would in turn flow to Schedule A - Itemized Deductions - Miscellaneous Deductions, and would have to exceed 2% of your AGI for the excess to be deductible.

What paint colors would be ideal for a serene home office with Scandinavian-modern furniture and aesthetics?
Q. My stepmom is in the process of converting two small guest bedrooms into one large home office that is adjacent to a nursery. The room that is connected to the nursery (by a bathroom) is currently painted a medium-hued turquoise called Blue Ground by Farrow & Ball, and will serve sort of like the sitting area of the office. She adores the color, and will most likely keep it. The other room is wallpapered, but they're going to remove the paper and paint. There is still a partial wall up, so even though the space is open, there is a separation between the two rooms. This is why I think it would be nice to have the rooms two different colors that harmonize with one another. She is considering painting three walls a cloud white and having one accent wall with color.

All of the furniture that will go in the room has a Scandinavian-modern aesthetic to it, sort of like the IKEA style but higher quality. Most pieces are either white or blonde wood, and have clean lines. There is a lot of natural light streaming in. She is wanting the space to have a serene vibe to it with colors that are calming but not boring. We're in Southern California, so she's considering incorporating some ocean-inspired decor, like a driftwood coffee table and maybe sea glass colors, but it won't be like a "beach theme."

Do you have any paint color suggestions? Unfortunately, I'm in college several hours away, so I don't have any photos to share of the space.
This is the color of the room that is already painted: http://us.farrow-ball.com/blue-ground/colours/fcp-product/100210

A. I think I'd go for a light grey, either true grey or possibly a little on the blue side. It's certainly serene. It looks businesslike. It can go with an ocean theme. Think of the colour of an ocean just after a storm.
It will go with the furniture. A sand colour might be all right too but you'd have to be sure it goes okay with the blond wood. You could accuse grey of being boring, but it makes an excellent background colour and if you put an interesting piece of art or two on a wall, that will liven it up a lot.

I like that turquoise colour a lot too but combining with other colours is a bit tough without having it look like a kid's playroom. Anything red, pink, or coral is out. Yellow might work but it better be a very subdued yellow. Green just won't go. A medium blue might be okay but if it's too pale it will look cheap beside the turquoise and too dark will overwhelm everything else.

What are essentials for a home office?
Q. I want to convert a section of our home basement into a home office? What are essentials to creating an excellent home office environment?

A. The first step in creating a home office plan that works is to evaluate what you plan to do in the space.

A home office can have different zones for various tasks, equipment, and furniture needs. A desk and computer area may be one zone, while bookshelves, storage, and filing are another.

Furnishings. Make sure that you allow for adequate desk space for your equipment, and space to store materials, records and supplies.

Outlets. Are there enough electrical outlets to safely accommodate all of your business equipment (computer, telephone, copier, fax, clock and desk lamps)

Invest in a second phone line for your office.

Choose bright colors that will reflect light and keep you in a productive mood.

you'll need some sort of bookshelf-or shelves-and file drawers that are easily accessible without you having to get up.

Bulletin and chalk boards are a great way to keep home office reminders front and center.

accessories like pencil holders and divided containers.

personal art and pictures, family portraits.

A computer, desk chair and obvious things like that also.

Plants help make it more inviting.

Warm lighting, stay away from fluorescent lighting.

What is the nicest colour to paint a baby boys bedroom?

Q. `What is he nicest colour to paint a baby boys bedroom?
`What is he nicest colour to paint a baby girls bedroom?

A. I figure the colors blue and pink are so plain, why not do something fun!?

I did my daughter's room a two tone color, there were four walls..Two of them were a light, pastel pink and the other two were a pastel yellow! We then went to Michael's and got wooden letters and painted them white to spell out her name!

For a boy room, I like a pea green color like this one: http://d30opm7hsgivgh.cloudfront.net/upload/951973_MtZIQBA6_b.jpg

Love, love the color! And it's so different from the typical colors! Or, if you did want to go with the typical colors, another thing you could do for the boys room is follow the same two tone idea but instead with a pastel blue and a pastel yellow. Hope I could help!

What am I going to need straight away when the babies born?
Q. Ive been looking around target and babyco and Im just not sure of the things that I am going to need straight away and things that can just wait a while.

What will need to be in the babies bedroom?
What are the best toys etc?

PLease save this young oblivious girl :-)

Thanks peeps :-)

A. I'll tell you what not to waste your money on...money is in Australian dollars.

Tommee Tippee (or other brand) sanitiser bins (even if you live in an apartment) (waste of $80)

Avent (or other brand) bottle warmers (waste of $80)

Sterilisers - they take 20 mins to sterilise and boiling on the stove takes 5 mins (waste of $300 dollars in total)

0000 & 000 Formal outing clothes - only buy bonds wondersuits with mitten hands (waste of $500 approximation only)

Hooded baby towels (waste of $60)

Baby bath - (waste of $50)

Any Johnson and Johnson products as they all contain damn mineral oil which is a shocker for baby skin (get Innoxa for babies from chemists) (waste of $100)

Toys (waste of $300 - although we will use them later)
but new stuffed toys except for one teddy are going to Westmead Childrens Hospital

Travel cot (waste of $250) - we don't travel

Baby bag from Big W (waste of $90 - just use a regular bag and buy a thermo for babies bottles only if you need it - if breastfeeding take your breasts with you)

The best cot available from Baby Co - a standard cot would have been sufficient (waste of $1000, greys online has cots for $120 that met the Australian standards)

The best mattress available (standard mattress would be Ok as they move out of their cots pretty fast and much faster if they co-sleep (waste of $200)

Best car seat on the market (at the time was on special for $450) - again standard version perfectly fine.

Basically don't get sucked into the hype like we did to get the very best. The best toys are pots and pans and other items around your house.

You only need about a weeks worth of clothing - particularly if you have a dryer - as they grow out of 000's pretty quickly.

My wife just yelled out to tell you that you will need -

breast pads
cotton wool (she didn't use those sensitive wipes until baby was 4 weeks old and still uses the cotton wool with warm water regularly)
maternity pads (but it's best to get tena lady for incontinence as you'll bleed like your "carking it" for about 2 weeks)
panty liners when it slows down

oH Bloody Hell now I have to Edit my answer so my wife can tell you to buy

Nappies (diapers) - Huggies are the best - they are green in colour or if on a budget buy the small range from Aldi

Baby cream - Amolin is her favourite

Singlets x 7
Body suits x 7
Jumpsuit x 7
socks and mittens (x 2)

Cetaphil (it's sensitive hypollargenic cleanser and safe for babies - doesn't even sting eyes) - used for absolutely everything - washing hair, cleansing and moisturising faces, bums, you downstairs when your too sore for perfumed soaps)

Okay I'm moving on to the next question before she yells out something else...arrrhhh

Whats the best way to catch mice?
Q. I have tried the humane way, but gave up on that when they moved in to my babies bedroom. Since then i have used 2 different types of poison, glue boards and snap traps. they dont go near the poison and have escaped the glue, and licked the chocolate off the snap trap without setting it off.
Im at the end of my tether, this is a new property and all the flats have been infested with them due to shabby workmanship.
please help me im going out of my mind!

A. Use a mouse trap. Usually, a mouse trap is rectangular in shape and it is made of iron wire mesh. However, u may have to keep a piece of meat or good smelling stuff inside the cage. You will not find blood and flesh splattered. But you will surely find the mouse very much alive and kicking

How can I know if I'll be a good Interior Designer?

Q. I really want to be a good Interior Designer but I keep getting scared that I won't be able to do it. There are many things on my side such as creativity, good taste, like to research products and have an interest in all things related to it (even learning some electrical, plumbing, construction, and furniture building). But I think I can be a little ADD and miss details which I know are important. I'm going to try some medication for this but it still scares me. Also I can be impulsive. Any suggestions? How will I know if I'll be a good Designer? Also how would you recommend getting into the field. I'm in school for my ID Associates Degree but would love advice on how to get in there. (No furniture sales store rep!) If you were to hire an intern what would you look for? Thanks

A. Are you able to envision the finished project before you begin? People who are creative enough to have a vision for their work seem to make the best Interior Designers. However, you have to be practical enough to integrate your client's financial preferences for spending and also, you have to take into account practical considerations like natural lighting, color & style preferences, and the intended use of the space. You can be the most creative visionary, but if your client thinks it is just impractical, you won't get much return business.

Does a bike in a foyer violate the UK fire fire regulations?
Q. I live in a house that has been converted into five flats and there is a large foyer at the entrance. I have a rather expensive bike and I lock it in the foyer area, out of the way of everyone. My landlord has advised me that this is against UK fire regulations. I am a little confused at this since there is a truck load of other unused furniture, building equipment, a clothes dryer and other junk in the foyer as well.

Is my landlord correct that I canât store my bike in the area but the rest of the stuff is ok? To clarify the foyer is large and the bike is defiantly not in the way of any paths or doorways. I canât seem to find a decent answer on the web.

Thanks for your time!

A. Your landlord is right but you could tell him that the rest of the stuff is in breach of the fire regulations as well .

what are some furniture sites comparible to pottery barn but less exspensive?
Q. i love the idea of having furniture with built in storage that still looks chic. i also like an vintage feel. any suggestions?

A. try ebay and search on "pottery barn." ditto Crate and Barrel. our nearby outlet mall has outlet store for both of these, so try that as well. fyi, the style PB specializes in is sort of a minimalist modern.

Exploring Options for uising a General Contractor for a kitchen remodel?

Q. We are considering a kitchen remodel. We've hired a general contractor and a kitchen designer for the DESIGN PHASE (a seperate agreement will be presented for the BUILD PHASE). We would like to explore other paths in lieu of hiring a GC.

We are interested in hearing from homeowners who have done kitchen remodels as to the options they pursued? How many served as their own GC's? How did that go? How many worked with the local home center for cabinets, floors, etc and left the structural stuff to someone else? How did that work? We're not interested in being our own GC, but there has got to be a less expensive way! We're making quality decisions and downgrading OUR choices for OUR kitchen just to pay the GC's fee and overhead costs. For example, we did all the work to select over $10K worth of appliances (which will be delivered and installed) and the GC will stand to earn quite a bit for what appears little work (enough for another appliance). Are there any other options?

A. best thing is go to places research your materials price them out & compair prices through differant places to save money, then go home measure then measure again! sometimes sandpaper, new paint & hardwear, with some ellbow grease goes a long way man save alot of money to then you can buy new appliances lol to go with new look!

Is it normal for contractors to include a fee on cabinets as a part of a kitchen remodel?
Q. The quote from our contractor includes an 8% contractor's fee. This fee is applied to all aspects of the kitchen remodel-the demo, electric, etc. and it even includes the cabinets although the cabinets are ordered through a separate company and that company is responsible for installation. Just curious if it's normal to pay this as we could save over $1,000 if the fee was removed for that portion of the project!

A. Sounds like he is being upfront that he is charging 8% for being you contractor on each area. Do it yourself and save that plus you can hire who you want, not his buddies?

How can I add a pull chain to a ceiling light fixture?

Q. The previous owners of the house put a ceiling light and a fan with a light kit on the same wall switch. I'd like to have the fan on without the lights. I can use the pull chain on the light kit to kill the light on the fan, but the ceiling light is controlled by the switch. Is there a kit available that will allow me to add a pull chain to that ceiling light, as well?

A. I would check in the electrical department of a big home improvement store like Home Depot or Lowes. They could give you the right advice based on the type of light your are talking about.

Can I power a light switch and two ceiling lights from an adjacent duplex outlet?
Q. In my bathroom, there are two ceiling lights controlled by an SPST switch. Next to the switch, in the same box in the wall, is an outlet. The lights no longer turn on. I tried a new switch, no dice. However, the outlet right next to that switch still works. They each (the switch and the outlet) have a different feed coming to them as far as I can see, looking inside the wall. In other words, I don't see one of them branching of from the other. So, I am wondering if it is possible or advised to connect the switch to the outlet, and run new wire to the ceiling fixtures, so I can power the lights again? Also, I'd prefer the switch to control the lights only, not the outlet.

A. If you're correct that rhe switch is fed from a different circuit than the outlet, start looking where the lighting circuit goes to from that two gang box. If the lights worked before, now they don't, you could have a tripped breaker or a loose connection somewhere. Good luck and Merry Christmas.

How to install a light switch and additional ceiling lights?
Q. I have a ceiling light with a pull chain in my attic. I want to add two additional ceiling lights with pull chains. I also want to add a switch so all three come on at once. I believe to do this, I can take the wire leading to the first light, wire the black and white to the switch, and the grown as well. Then run a new wire to the first light, and then to each subsequent light. Am I over simplifying?

A. You basically have it. You keep the black wire black and the white wire white splicing a connection at each box. The black wire is supposed to be the "hot" side so your switch will be a break in the black wire and your white will just be connected without the switch.

Do a google on "residential wiring" or "home wiring" there are many sources with pictures and advice.

I Removed my ceramic tiles now how do you get rid of the left over grout?

Q. I Removed my ceramic tiles now how do you get rid of the left over grout? that was underneath the tiles?

A. Thats not grout under the tile. It is a product called thinset and the only way to get it off is to chip it out with hammer and chisel. Dont use a grinder as this will cause severe damage to the underlayment.

where can i buy 4 x 4 colored ceramic tiles in southwest missouri or online?
Q. I'm a budding mosaic artist and am in search of ceramic tiles of all colors (not just the black, blues and whites sold at Home repair stores). It doesn't matter if I have to order from out of state.

I have an endless array of glass/stain glass and don't need them.

A. Hi gushpuppy,
You can buy 4 x 4 colored ceramic tiles on Amazon, here is the link

How to remove the ceramic tiles on dry wall in the bath room?
Q. The walls in the bath room of my house are with different ceramic tiles. May be the previous owner changed the tub & the walls around it but not the walls in other parts of the bath room. I checked with the ceramic tile shops & am able to buy the same tiles as those around the tub. Is it advisable for me to remove the tiles on the dry wall beyond the tub & install matching new tiles without replacing the dry wall? How to remove the tiles? What details I have to pay attention to?

A. You can carefully remove the tile on dry wall by using a flat pry bar or wide flat chisel. Do not pry on the tiles you can go right through the dry wall. Get behind them and pull or use a hammer to get behind them with a flat bar or chisel and take them off.
You will pull some hunks and tear paper, most of these can be repaired and gone over with new tile. You ll have to do some patching and sealing of old paper ( just primer paint).
The other choice is to cut the dry wall out and replace with a 1/2" cement board, dry wall or a product called Denshield.
The use of a cement board or the Denshield is suggested if any of this area is in a water area.

Is it possible to bypass door sensor of a GE Simon Home alarm from the inside?

Q. I originally purchased my GE Simon for home safety. Now, with a 15 year old daughter who has become fond of sneaking out at 2am, itâs become more of a child safety tool. As soon as I set it back up, I caught her trying to bypass the alarm on the front door by sticking a magnet between the piece on the door and the piece on the wall. This did not work, but I am not sure why as its only a magnet inside the plastic piece on the door. Is there any other way she could bypass the alarm?

A. This is not an electronics issue. If your 15 y/o daughter is sneaking out of the house at 2:00AM, you need to be in the child care area asking for help in remedying a problem that started a long time ago. Take your daughter to the doctor for a full physical exam, including drug screen & pregnancy test. Find a family counselor, and drag her there.

Americans, what would be the best gun for home protection?
Q. I'm from the United Kingdom and I am looking to move to the USA in April, I have always wanted to purchase a gun but they don't give us that right back here. So my question is, what gun would you say would be effective for home safety? And also what gun do you use?

A. For home defense I would recommend a Remington 870 pump shotgun 12 GA or 20 GA if the recoil from the 12 is to much.

If you want a handgun, depends on you price and what is comfortable to you.

For beginners I recommend you practice with a. 22 and move up to the 9mm.

For home defense/ carry with a handgun the 9mm and .45 ACP are good.

Since I'm 19 I still got another year and a half before I can get a CCW and handgun. But there are many great choices these are popular brands:
Colt
S&W
Ruger
Glock
CZ
Beretta
H&K

In America you can go to a shooting range and rent a few guns to shoot and see what you like.

Normally I would say the larger .45 ACP for home defense but given your lack of experience a 9mm hollow point would be best. The Glock 17 and 19 are good aswell as the CZ 75 sp-01 and Beretta 92. If you decide to go with the .45 ACP try a Glock 21 or 1911. For a revolver a S&W chambered in .357 Magnum is good also. You should try each to see what fits you best.

Here's a link to S&W website:

What is your favorite weapon of choice for securing your home? I'm about to make a purchase.?
Q. I'm about to purchase a Mossberg 500 Tactical Persuader and a Glock 21 .45 or M&P45. Let me know if there are any better selections for personal and home safety.

A. Moss 500 is excellent with either pistol grip only or fold out stock. Glock in .40 S&W is tops. a S&W M&P .45 is a good choice too.

However, I personally prefer a standard Gov't 1911A1 and for a long arm, nothing makes them think twice like racking back an L1A1.

Bathroom remodeling, when should we have windows installed?
Q. We are planning on having our bathroom remodeled. We want to replace the bathroom window, replace the floor tiles, tile and paint the walls, and have a sink and mirror installed. Here's my question: do we have the window installed first before the other things or last?

A. You'll want to tile around the window and make sure it is well sealed so the window goes into the framing, then tile backer board, then the tile. Window first, in other words.

Help with becoming a better sales person?
Q. I work for a company called Winport USA. It's a small company that imports school, home, and office furniture. The company actually has really, really nice furniture, that is not common in the US. I have to start calling schools and asking them if they are interested in buying any school furniture. I am supposed to set up a meeting with them if possible, and give them our website address.

I honestly don't even know where to start. This is my first sales job, and the entire company is counting on me. I have no experience whatsoever. Any advice?

Thanks!

A. The trick is to listen. hear what they want or need and fill that gap. Keep working even when everyone says no.

Good luck!

feng shui- Color, decor and elements should I use for my home office located @ the south corner of the house?
Q. Yeah basically want to know what are the most auspicious colors and elements as well as decorations, I should use for my home office located at the south corner of my house, the office is a room located in a garden-level basement with nothing other than a door & 2 windows. Thanks.

A. For the South or Li area of your homes you can use the Primary Colors (Enhancing)Fire colors- red, burgundy, maroon, orange, purple. Although one accent wall of such a yang color would be enough. You have to be careful with red if you have the negative 5 flying star in the south. The flying star system is a deeper level of FS and gives you info on your house based on its birthday and facing direction. The other group of colors is the Secondary Colors (Nourishing) In other words wood nourishes fire and helps it grow. Wood colors are Green, Olive, Light Green, Hunter Green, Chartreuse, Teal
Shapes and Patterns are triangular, conical, and pyramidal ,zig zag and star
Avoid ocean scenes and too much blue. Wood would be best for office furniture.
EnhancementsRED signage or logo for a business that you work for. Tall, healthy plants.
Objects of recognition such as diplomas, endorsements, university credentials, certificates of appreciation from work, the community or family.
Personal Associations /Symbols/ ArtAwards, diplomas, trophies, prizes/ people, fire, sunshine, sunflowers, fireworks, famous people you admire, picture of yourself in red.
Auspicious paintings of birds, with strong red coloring such as the phoenix, roosters, or flamingoes. These are just some ways to interpret the Li trigram which is the south.
Good luck with your new home office.

How do other contractors get repair and remodeling leads?

Q. I specialize in kitchen and bathroom remodeling and I'm always looking for more business. I'm hoping to partner with some of the local plumbing companies in order to generate more leads (esp. bath remodels). Any other suggestions would be appreciated. I've tried print advertising but all I get is telemarketer calls.

A. Word of mouth is your biggest friend. Have you a builders association to join? Other trades can recommend other trades. Is there a BNI close by? It s a business network that tries to to business within their own network. Join any Lions or Kiwanis clubs and stay fairly active.. GL

best home remodeling company in Minneapolis?
Q. I am in the process of buying my first home and the basement needs to be finished as well as a few new windows put in and the gutter replaced. I'm looking for a company that can do everything for me (maybe also some bathroom remodeling). Someone who is not ridiculously expensive, reliable, and timely. The rehab loan I am taking out requires that the work be done by an approved contractor and within 30 days of closing. All suggestions welcome! How do you remove laminate flooring that was put down and glued to the floor?

Q. I have this horrible laminate flooring in my house but it's hard to take off the sub-floor because the laminate is glued to the floor. I have been taking it out with a screw driver and hammer and it kinda damages the sub-floor. Is there a way to take out the laminate with little damage to the sub-floor?

A. That is a very tedious job. You will be sitting there forever with a pry bar though. You can also buy a floor scraper for about $20 at any hardware store. Generally found in the flooring dept.

Take my experience though, all depending on what you re-cover with (ie. tile, carpet, etc) if you are going with tile, you need to have a glue free surface. Plywood is inexpensive and easier to remove that your laminate, Not to mention the time and aggravation you will save.

What are good flooring options for a cottage that won't be winterized?
Q. We were hoping to put down laminate flooring but have been told we'd have to heat the floor at all times as stepping on it if it's been exposed to freezing temperatures could cause it to crack (shatter?) open. Real hardwood flooring is expensive and we don't really want carpet or linoleom. Any suggestions or advice?

A. Most quality laminates are meant to serve interiors which are not environmentally controlled all year long. You just have to make sure you're getting the good stuff. Ask your seller about the laminate floor's AC rating, to make sure it's likely to be durable enough for what you've got in mind. For a residence, you shouldn't settle for less than an AC3 rating. Generally, the fiberboard core of a quality laminate floor will help it to weather temperature changes.

Also, you're going to want to choose a type of flooring which is low-maintenance for a cottage. You don't want to be spending too much time with refinishing and waxing flooring when you're meant to be relaxing. Laminate flooring requires dry or damp mopping or a vacuuming, but otherwise retains its look without too much intervention on your part.

Don't ever install hardwood flooring in an area which is not environmentally controlled. The wood will expand and contract radically when in non-controlled conditions. For hardwood, this spells disaster - warping, cupping, the works! The great thing is, laminate flooring has really come a long way in terms of look. You can get laminate flooring which looks almost exactly like solid hardwood - even a "handscraped" look, or a beveled edge effect. And you still get that look without having to worry about the practicalities of maintaining a natural product in a less-than-friendly environment when it comes to extreme conditions.

Whatever you choose to do, enjoy your new floor!

What is the best kitchen flooring for a home with a very slobbery dog?
Q. My dog slobbers a lot on the kitchen floor when we are out. We come home to lots of very watery slobber on the floor. Our current linoleum flooring is old and needs replacement. I would like something in style but it needs to withstand the slobber. Thanks for any suggestions.

A. The subject of kitchen flooring and dogs can be a real dilemma for those who have large rambunctious pups and a small budget. Some of the more durable floor types can be somewhat expensive. When it comes to flooring, you get what you pay for. While some kitchen floor types can entail high upfront costs, in the long run, they may just help you save money.
Some Kitchen Floor Types for Dogs:

Linoleum flooring
Ceramic tile flooring
High-pressure laminate
Rubber flooring

Hardwood is affected by changes in humidity and is not recommended for bathrooms, kitchens, or below grade. Many laminate floors are water-resistant, but you should check the warranty to be sure what is and is not covered.

What wall color would do with white bedroom furniture with gold details?

Q. I have white bedroom furniture with gold details and also white cupboards. I don't know what color would match for the walls. Any suggestions would be really appreciated!

A. White with gold, like french provincial furniture style, goes great with just about anything lightish. I like light aqua, pear green or lavender. Try to stay away from real deep colors like cobalt blue, emerald green or royal purple since t is too overwhelming with the white furniture.

Master bedroom furniture is traditional dark brown (new), what color can I paint walls?
Q. Bedroom furniture consits of King size bed, two night stands and nine draw dresser. Considering to have 50" TV over dresser, sitting area and include small kitchenette.

A. Hi!

Brown is a neutral color, so basically, you can paint any color under the rainbow with it... it all depends on what you like. There are a few things to remember though, and I have a few suggestions... Hope this helps:

To have complete color harmony in any room, you need to have 3 colors: 1 dominant color (usually the walls), 1 medium color (usually the trim, molding, ceiling, furniture, etc.) and 1 accent color (usually decorative accents such as cushions, vases, throws, etc.). You can use the same color as your funiture as you do on an accent wall or all the walls... it depends on lots of things like your lighting, but we'll get to that later.

In decorating, black and white are not considered colors. White is the absence of all color. That's why you can match it with any color under the rainbow. Black is the mixture of all colors. That's why it too, can be mixed with any color under the rainbow. It's not necessary to have any white in a room, but it is very important that you have at least one black item: a vase, a picture frame, a throw rug, a cushion, a curtain rod, a lamp, etc.... you get the idea). The black will ground ALL of your colors together. So don't forget to add something black in your room.

What color of brown is your furniture: Black-brown (as in very dark espresso coffee), dark chocolate brown, etc. Since you didn't say, here are some color schemes that work with different types of brown furniture. The way to use them is for the 1st color = dominant 2nd color = medium and 3rd color = accent. Of course, you can use them in any other way you like, thought the ones listed here are best together in just this way. (after, you'll get some links to some nice color inspiration).

Chocolate brown & Terra-cotta & Taupe
Chocolate brown & Metallic Gold & Neutral bisque
Chocolate brown & Delicate teal & Teal blue
Chocolate brown & Teal blue & Gernaium red

So... hope that was fun...

The best and most trusted way to find the color for any room, is to take an accessory or decorative item that will be going into that room: the duvet cover, the curtains, a painting, a rug, blinds, shutters, upholstered furniture, a lamp... you get the idea). Choose the item with passion. Make it something that you ABSOLUTELY LOVE, perhaps it was handed down by your great-grandmother or a cherished item you worked hard for. Or make it something that just SCREAMED out your name when you were shopping, so you knew you had to have it! Choose your color pattern from that item. And take it from there.

Keep in mind too, that color is an amazing thing! There's psychology behind color - it can make you have wonderful, relaxing dreams... or it can keep you from falling asleep, especially if you're already a wound-up 6 year old little boy! It can make you feel warm and comfortable, or hot and stifled. It can make you feel nice, fresh and cool - or it can make you feel like parts of you are going to freeze off. Color can be your friend or your enemy. And really, the earth can "shed some light" on us to help decide every color scheme. Here's how:
What direction does your room face - North, South, East or West? It makes a difference. If you've got the sun pounding down on your bedroom window, you'll want to stay away from warm colors, such as reds, yellows, oranges, etc. They'll make you feel too hot. Opt for cooler colors, such as blues, turquoise, cool creams... think mediterranean beach style here. In a room facing North, that doesn't get much light, you'll opt more for warmer colors and brighter colors: yellow, bright pinks, golden hues. Here's a most interesting link about how color affects us psychologicallly:

That's all I guess... Hope I helped you choose your color ;-)

You're always welcome to email and I'd enjoy knowing what color scheme you chose...!

How can I refinish my bedroom furniture?
Q. My bedroom furniture is worth about $5000, it came from my grandmas, it is all over 50 years old. It is called Hitchcock furniture. Tips or advice on all steps to refinish it? Help please!

A. If the furniture is solid wood, stained and varnished, you can strip the varnish off with paint stripper. Follow the directions on the can.

If the pieces are stained, the stain will remain. It is soaked into the wood. You can now apply a new coat of varnish, water base poly or tung oil (easiest).

If you do not like the stain color, you can paint the furniture. All poly or varnish should be removed. Prime first with a good quality primer. Get it tinted to 1/4 the color of the paint you plan on using if the paint is a dark color. Otherwise use the primer as is.

Then apply a couple of coats of the finish color.
Satin latex for low sheen.
semi-gloss latex for more sheen.

My opinion on old furniture. It if good quality, solid wood, I wood remove the varnish down to the stained wood. then rub on a couple coats of tung oil. Preserves the wood great, shows all the grain, easy to use, no mistakes.

If the furniture has some veneer on it, thin pieces of good wood, you will have to be careful with the refinishing as you could easily cause these thin pieces to lift or if sanded, sand too heavily and sand right thru them.

To paint, you really should remove the doors, hinges, etc to get a smoother job and buy a good quality brush too.
It really makes a difference in the finish looking good or cheap.
A 2" brush should coats $8-10. Home D or Lowes.

is there an inexpensive or free home design software out there for a normal homeowner?

Q. its just that I want to play around with some home design ideas with my house for a small addition, & I need some kind of basic program to use. Thanks!

A. I know they can be hard to find. I think Lowes has one on their website, I used it for a kitchen once, but it takes some patience. I have always done my design ideas in The Sims 2, because it is much more user friendly and quick. I never really get around to playing the actual game though. The only problem with this is sometimes the location of things isn't exactly where you want it, but it's a good way to get the idea of what you want to do.

what is the difference between interior design and professional home design?
Q. i am interested in becoming an architect. i know what kind of architecture i want to be. but i dont know what its call. i just want to draw a single homes w/ rooms, bathroom, living room and ext from foundation up. what is it call? interior design or professional home design?

A. That is called an architect.
An interior designer is a licensed professional (as is architect) who is the type of person who helps out on the show trading spaces. They "design interiors." They will usually be knowledgeable in fabric, color, material, and geometric organization.
A professional home designer is usually a person who is not licensed or registered and draws up house plans. They call themself home designer because they are not licensed and not allowed to use architect.
An architect is a registered professional licensed to practice architecture and design buildings (including homes)

What color should go with my bedroom furniture?

Q. I have all black bedroom furniture ( my husband picked it out lol ). I have no idea what color accents or b edding to get. Any suggestions?

A. Get lots white room accents (lamps, vases, clocks, etc) with a little colour in there like bright blue or scarlet (in the smaller accents like candles, etc). bedding should be simple if you have lots of colourful accessories, but if you stick with white try something crazy and multi-coloured! Paint the walls a colour that shows up in your bedding (but one that doesn't show up a lot).
Ikea is an excellent store to go to, great design and unbelievable prices. Almost any art museum will actually have nice stuff, too. Target is another good place.

What is the best, if any, way to sell my oak bedroom furniture, please read ?
Q. I have a beutiful set of oak bedroom furniture that i actually got for next to nothing but it is great. I don't know anything about the value of furniture, but now that I am 56, I am finding that things I have in my house are actually collectibles etc. I guess there is something good about being on the wrong side of 50 :) :) :) I bought it "used" in 1989 but it is like perfect and includes 2 night stands, big chester drawers with mirror and head for bed. ?? thanks for you furniture people I can help with children things and sewing :) and selling on ebay and of course jesus things

A. The sad part of having anything beautiful, like well-made furniture, is that many people can't or won't appreciate it. I found this to be true when an Appraiser came through an estate I was handling and put these ridiculously small values on some fine pieces of furniture. His answer was that there is a small market for "used" furniture; most young people today would rather go to a "Big Box" store and buy some "you-build-it" crap made out of particle board than spend a few dollars more and have something they can cherish for years.
You can certainly try selling the suite on eBay, but unless the set is really old, you may not find a buyer...
You may want to try placing an ad in the classifieds of your local paper, but that usually entails alot of unwarranted phone calls.
We have "consignment" shops in this area that will take in items like this, but, if you have a timely need for cash, you may have to wait a while before the set sells.
Auction houses are always looking for quality merchandise, but there again you have to be careful, as their costs may eat up a lot of your possible gain.
Word-of-mouth may be the easiest; letting people know at work, your place of worship, etc.
And then, there is always donation. You state that you got for "next to nothing", so if you're not looking to make a few bucks, need the space, and want to feel good about it, you can call a local charitable orgainzation. They could come pick it up for nothing and you get a decent tax write off.
Good luck....Like I said, nice pieces can be difficult to "get rid" of. I have two of my parents solid mahogany dressers that neither of my sons want, so I don't know where they will end up..........

How long does it usually take to get bedroom furniture? Do most stores have you "order" the furniture?
Q. I'm in the market for some new bedroom furniture. I'm not necessarily in a hurry to get it, but I am curious about how long I can expect the process to take. I plan on buying from a "showroom" type furniture store, as opposed to a warehouse or clearance center. Plus, I'm getting a king bed and I hear that most stores cater towards customers looking for queens. I guess I will have to "order" the furniture. If you ordered from a store like this, how long did it take?

Also, I did find one set that i like, but i was told they cant deliver for 7-8 weeks due to back order. Is that standard wait time or way too long?

A. If you really like the set and the price, then I guess it is worth the wait.

I had to wait that long to get the living room sofa I special ordered.

And my bed took even longer but then we had an artist make a special headboard.

What are the standard sizes of bathroom countertops?

Q. What are the standard sizes of bathroom countertops, two sink version(s)? If I am not doing a special order or trimming, what are the usual sizes to work with? Do you know any sites online that list this info? I am going crazy looking this up online, seems like it would be in the interest of online sellers to list standard sizes of countertops. Guess they earn more if they get more special order sizes. Thanks!

A. Hard to answer your question, in most homes there is no standard anything. If you mean depth, it is usually just a little deeper than your bathroom cupboards. The length is usually determined by how much room you have and how much free counter space you want. Most counter builders bill the lengths in even footage (if you want 9 ft. 5 in. they bill you for 10 ft.) in 6, 8, 10, and 12 foot lengths. This probably didn't help but go to a local hardware store that sells counters and counter tops and talk to them, they can give you a good idea.

How do you remove cigarette burns off of a bathroom countertop?
Q. It is a standard bathroom countertop with cigarette burns on it and the management company wont change it. It looks horrible.

A. change the whole counter top not as expensive as you think for the bath rooms in an apartment

What other materials can I use as a bathroom countertop besides the expensive granite?
Q. I am updating my bathroom. Granite countertops are so expensive. I have looked into using a wood slab or glass. Any other cost saving solutions out there?

A. Formica is relatively inexpensive. Swanstone or Corian would be somewhere between granite and Formica.

What does it mean when a guy tells you that you have nice living room furniture?

Q. So this guy was my boyfriends bestfriend. It was the first time I had ever met him. He goes "Hello, My name is *blah blah* you have nice living room furniture." He has never been to my house!

A. If he said it right after saying hello, as in there was no pause in between, he was probably nervous or feels attracted to you, if he actually looked around for a moment then he probably just meant it as what it was.

Inexpensive living room furniture?
Q. I am moving in October and would like to buy new living room furniture. Basically I would like a sofa, chair, some type of tables (but not committed to anything). ottoman and TV armoire. Because I bought all of this only a few years ago, I don't want to go overboard, but want something modern and comfortable. And of course not too expensive.

A. try the ikea website for ideas.

Reupholstery or slip cover for living room furniture?
Q. I am in desperate need of living room furniture but do not have the money. Which is easier and looks better reupholstering or putting slip covers on my furniture? What is the average cost? Do you have any suggestions of where to look? Also any suggestions for where to find furniture. I am in North Carolina. Thank you.

A. I would try this website for slipcover information: http://www.allaboutslipcovers.com. This will give you all the information you need on slipcovers- price, colors, fabrics, etc. Personally, I think slipcovers are best because upholstering is hard and it can look bad if not done right. Also, slipcovers are easy to put on and throw in the washer if they get stained. Slipcovers look very Pottery Barn-ish or contemporary... they are perfect and I believe they run a bit cheaper as well.

How often does Staples office furniture go on sale?

Q. We're currently shopping for home office furniture and last week found a desk at Staples that we liked. It was significantly marked down as part of a sale. We didn't buy at the time (wish we had) as we were still shopping around for price and style. When we returned today the sale was over.

Could someone tell me how often Staples puts their office furniture on sale? Perhaps a current or former employee would be able to tell me.

Thanks.

A. They have a sale every 30 days. But not on everything. Ask to be put on their email list. They notify you in advance of the furniture sales. ( i don't work for them).

Or ask the store manager to call you when your exact items go on sale. She will call.

Has anyone had/have +/- experience with home office furniture made by Aspen Furniture?
Q. At Woodley's & Kacey Fine Furniture in the Denver metro area I have seen knicked/worn floor models of home office furniture made by Aspen Furniture. I am curious whether this is indicitive of the quality of the pieces and/or the manufacturer, or is it because the floor models have gotten moved around/abused at the store. The pieces are made out of hardwood & veneers. I REALLY like the collection & feel it is what I need & in my price range. However, I don't want to spend money on something that won't last but a couple years. Please advise!

A. dont care

What are the steps to buying a home via a va home loan?

Q. We're a military family, and I believe eligible for a VA home loan. We have about 30K in credit card debt, but are hoping to pay it off before applying for the loan. Just wanted some info on what to expect.

A. Got to get your VA certificate first, then apply like any other mortgage. I wouldn't use a VA home loan if you don't have to. You have to pay a funding fee ontop of your regular closing cost. But good luck.

What is the difference between pre aproval and pre qualify in home loan?
Q. I keep seeing people talking about being pre approved for a home loan or being pre qualified, one being quicker and easier than the other. What is the difference/benifit of the two?

A. Preapproval is a conditional approval usually received after you have applied for a home loan. A final approval is given once a underwriter has reviewed the loan.

A Prequalify is given to people that have passed a general screening process based on the lenders guidlines. A prequal doesn't mean you are preapproved, preapproval will usually be given once you apply and meet the the lenders qualifications.

The process for either or will be the same. If you have a preapproval from your current mortgage provider then that means they did a more in depth research to prequal and the process maybe quicker with them.

What's the difference between home loan modification and mortgage refinancing?
Q. home loan modification vs mortgage refinancing, are they the same thing?

A. A mod will take your existing loan and make changes to it it can lower your interest rate and your payment or just lower your payment the bank will take your financial information from you and then they will determine how much you can afford to pay a month then the mortgage company will make a decision based on the information they have got from you if they will do the mod but with the new obama plan they will give you a mod for 3 months to see if you can make the new payments is you can then you get the mod if you can't then you don't and the obama plan will give you a fixed interest rate instead of an adjustable one
A refinance will give you a completely new loan so you could get a lower interest rate and a new payment but if you are behind in your current mortgage most banks will not touch your loan and you will have to try and get a modification
