Buying or building a home bar?

Q. I want to install a bar in my new "MAN CAVE" basement. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to buy a nice one? I have just moved to an area about an hour north of Atlanta, GA. Or, if buying is not an option, can someone direct me to a website, book, person, or instructional DVD to help me out?

Thanks

A. Sam's Club and Costco often carry bars that are made like a piece of furniture. You might also check with a local kitchen shop--a bar would probably only require two, maybe three cabinets and a top, and might not be expensive.

What kind of bar stool goes with a victorian sofa?
Q. I just bought a beautiful victorian style sofa, but I also need bar stools. I'm in a one bedroom apartment and have used the dining area as an office area, so I want to put two bar stools at the pass thru to the kitchen. The only problem is that this is directly behind the sofa. I really would like something comfortable - a broad seat with a back. Please send your ideas - links to pictures or places I could purchase are most welcomed! (I'm in TX)

A. Heaps of bar stools here:

I think one of these would look good with your sofa:

Bad smell from new furniture in nursery-how do i get it out?
Q. About 2 months ago my husband and i bought a crib and dresser combo for our baby who is due in about 2 weeks. Got it home and out of the boxes and it smells bad. I cant explain the smell. It doesnt smell like hard wood, its more like a chemical-ish odor from the finish or laquer it has on it. It's making all of his cloths in his dresser small the same way. It's really annoying to me. I feel like ill be putting him in a room full of fumes. Anyone have any idea HOW i can get rid of the smell naturally? I have heard of taking it out in the sun everyday over long period of time to let it breath out and get the fumes out but is that the only way. I dont have alot of time really.
By the way, this isnt a smell that would be easily covered up. Its not one of those- dog pissed on the carpet type of thing- and its hard wood so if i spray something like air freshener it doesnt work.. but thanks

A. I would open the windows in the nursery to air it out. Point an oscillating fan on them as well w/the drawers open (remove the clothes so they don't absorb the scent-give them a wash if they don't air out on their own in a few days). If you have a ceiling fan, turn that on too. The air circulation will help get the smell out quicker than anything else. If you are running your air condition, close the door to keep it out of the rest of your home. This isn't exactly energy efficient, but it's the easiest. The 12 week waiting period for a new crib won't be helpful to because the new one will have similar issues, unless you get a wrought iron crib-but those have their own issues (significant cost, danger of getting hurt on bars, etc).

Volatile compounds (VOCs) used in staining products tend to take longer to dry/cure especially when they are in oil based products. (Also why people shouldn't use oil based paints to paint interior spaces if they are sensitive to smells.)

I assume that you have allowed the mattress to air out also. Most mattresses have a smell to them as well. This also goes for newly installed carpets.

If you plan on using a bassinet/pack-n-play w/included bassinet then, I suggest using that (not in the childs room) in the interim. Your momma super smeller is working, which is a good thing in this case. When you can no longer smell the "new" smell, it will be safe to put baby in the crib.

Congratulations! I hope you have an easy delivery with your son. Btw, I found out w/mine that when they say "bouncing baby boy", they mean when he gets old enough to start bouncing on furniture or whenever they get excited about something :-)

Interior Designs - Bedroom and Bathroom Designs?

Q. Hey people, my house is under renovation and I need a good website that is realted to Interior Designs, decoration, painting, bedroom and bathroom designs.
Thanks

A. Google your search, that is the best way out! You may also try http://www.smartken.com for Bedroom and Bathroom designs

What is the theme in western-style bathrooms?
Q. I'm doing bachelors of architecture and we have this project of theme-oriented bathrooms. and my theme is to design a western-style bathroom, so i can see the pictures on Google and know some basic things that there should be and i can easily design one, but the thing is that I have to give the theme first, so I need the basic theme on which a western style bathroom is designed.

A. The toilets are bigger than other countries typically. The showers always have some sort of enclosed area unlike other countries which just share the same floor as the bathroom. Besides a master bathroom, typically the size of the bathroom can be smaller, especially the half bath. I don't think other countries share the same concept of half bath.

where can I find bedding for a 20 somthing couple?
Q. My boyfriend and I (25 and 24, respectively) are getting our first apartment together. I looked up some really streamlined/classy marvel comics art and told him he could have the living room as his gaming space/man cave if I could have the bedroom and bathroom to design as I wish. While I find it would be easy to go with some soft pastels/florals, I really don't see him waking up to that. My biggest problem is finding a cheap, quality comforter/duvet cover. So far I've tried
urban outfitters
anthropologie
wayfair
jcpenny
macys
target
west elm
blisslivine home
allmodern
etc.

Where can I find quality for cheap?

A. If they have them in your area, check out the home goods department of the Ross Dress for Less stores. Most people think of them as just clothes but they have terrific deals on quality linens in their home decor area. I bought a gorgeous 400 count cotton steel blue and light brown damask design duvet cover and matching shams there last year for $25 ($15 for the cover and $5 each for the shams). The original prices were $160 for the cover and $30 each for the shams.

Have also picked up a teal blue 100% silk quilted queen sized spread there for $30. I have bought Ralph Lauren, Laura Ashley and Tommy Hilfiger sheets for less than $30 a set and countless beautiful throw pillows (some down filled and hand-embroidered) that were $10 to $15 each. They also have drapes, drapery hardware, small furnishings (upholstered benches, night stands, small cabinets), lamps, framed art, mirrors and small area rugs. Obviously, the selection varies so you have to have patience and check their inventory regularly, but the prices are terrific for quality goods.

Also check out The Company Store, who may have the widest range of quality linens. They are not cheap but sometimes they have good deals in their clearance section. They have beautiful and classy designs that appeal to guys as well as women.

Q. I'd go to the Menards hardware store near my place. They got food, furniture, building supplies for barricades, power tools ... pretty much everything. When painting a bathroom, do you have to use a special paint to withstand heat and humidity?

Q. I am going to be painting my bathroom this weekend. I was wondering if I can use the regular matte finish in there or do I have to get a little gloss so it can stand the heat. I never close my bathroom door because it's inside my bedroom so I just close my bedroom door. It never gets THAT steamy in the bathroom because of that. I am just wondering though. Also, do you think it's nice to also paint the ceiling the same color as the walls? Or should I leave it white? I am doing a light pinkish color.

A. Don't use flat paint, I't grows mold really easy. I used to own a painting busines. We always used semi gloss or gloss paint for the bathrooms. I saw some one else recomend Behr paints from Home dept, My advice is not to use it. I found it required a lot of extra prep and even mutiple coats to get good coverage. I like the look of the bathroom walls and ceiling the same color.Good luck

How to clean bathroom walls before painting?
Q. My bathroom walls are coated with hair, dust, fuzz from my towels and hairspay. I need to clean them before I paint. What cleaning products do you suggest I use?
Once cleaned, do I need to use a base primer? What type of paint should I use, Latex or Oil? How many coats? I already have the color chosen, I just need the how to tips. Thanks.

A. There is a powder cleaning product called TSP, that you can purchase at any hardware store. Follow the directions on the box.

Buy the primer KILZ. After the walls are completely dry, paint them with the Kilz.

Then apply a water based enamel paint.

Never use a latex paint in the bathroom because moisture gets under it and it starts to bubble and pull away from the wall. All bleach does is change the color of the dirt and sterilize it.

What should I use my gift cards on?

Q. I have a good amount of gift cards from a well known home furnishing store. My plastic containers fall out at me from the cabinets, as do my pots and pans. We have a small condo. I'd also like a metal trash can (which are expensive) or a nice toilet brush set. I love vacuum cleaners, but already have a Dyson and Hoover (so I think I don't need another?). We are expecting a baby next month too. What are some good items to get?
Does anyone have an ideas on what to use them for as far as decorating or remodeling the interior goes?
Bed Bath and Beyond doesn't have all those things. Their sister store might, but its too far.

A. Baby crib, mattress, blankets, clothes, bottles, formula, bottle sterilizer, potty, diapers, stroller, car seat....they do cost a lot, don't they.

Can I claim my grandmother who is 70 year old and lives in a nursing home as a dependent?
Q. My grandmother is 70 and lives in a nursing home, I furnish all of the support for her, I paid over $12,000 for the nursing home, bought her a wheelchair, paid for her doctor's fees. Can I claim her as a dependent and deduct those expenses?

A. Yes. Provided, as it is very likely, that she ...

1) does not earn more than $3,650 gross income. In this case, if only social security, that does not count as gross income.

2) Including all her income, such as pensions and social security, you still provide over 50% support. As you say, you furnish all support.

You can deduct medical expenses on your tax return for a dependent, but not the entire cost of the nursing home. Ask them for a breakdown of the expenses, the room and board portion will not count. The other expenses, wheelchair, doctor fees, medications, etc. do count.

What do you have to do to an attic or basement to make it liveable space?

Q. I want to add my attic and basement to the overall square footage of my house when I list it for sell. What is required to make an attic listed as a bedroom and a basement listed as a den? Can I just list them as that or do I have to remodel something?

A. If your attic and basement are unfinished no (decent) agent will list them as living space. If you're selling the house yourself and you list unfinished areas of your home as rooms, buyer will consider you dishonest and wonder what else you've lied about. Finishing an attic as a bedroom would probably be easier than remodeling a basement (especially if it has any dampness). The walls of an attic will need to be insulated, have a moisture barrier put over that. Electrical outlets and lighting need to be wired to code, then sheetrock the walls (which should be taped, sanded and primed, at the least). Attention should also be given to flooring. A DRY basement could be finished much in the same way, but consideration need to be given to furnaces, hotwater heaters, etc. that are often in them, and be up to code. If your basement is damp, remodeling can get costly and may not give you a good return at sale.

How to locate a live wire in the attic to tap a power outlet.?
Q. In the attic, I see a wire that I suspect is going to a standard outlet below. I'd like to tap a wire from this line to a ceiling outlet for my hanged TV. How do I make sure that this is really a live wire that goes down to an outlet and not a mere switch line, or something else. Thanks.

A. You could do what I did for my neighbor who wanted an outlet on the ceiling for her 42" LCD TV mounted on the wall. I ran a heavy duty extension cord(14 ga) in the attic from the wall outlet in the central air/heater unit closet and mounted a junction box on a 2x4 stud installed between the attic ceiling studs(16" apart) and flush mounted it to the ceiling. Didn't have to worry about taping into any power lines in the attic. Was a very easy job and it worked great.

Should i ventilate the attic when the airconditioner is running to cool of the downstairs?
Q. This is a one hundred year old three story house. It has insulation in the walls up to where the attic starts. No attic floor insulation. Attic ceiling is A frame peak with insulation in the sealing. No attic vents, so I put the fan in the window to blow out the hot air. Close the attic door and turn on the whole house airconditioner which really is only effective on the first floor with a little effect in one bedroom.

A. you are better off ventilating the attic, not only will it help keep your house cooler, it will also extend the life of your shingles

Can you go to jail for pawning something from buddys home furnishing?

Q. I am wondering if I pawned something that I rented from buddys home furnishing and now the pawnshop sold it. I have been paying them even though, BUT now I am really hard up for money and cannot make the payment. Can they press criminal charges on me for not paying them?

A. Selling Rental Property is a felony and on top of that if you stole it from your friend which you obviously did that also is a felony. You know many people steal and pawn and are hard up for money because they use drugs. Is that an issue-maybe getting clean would help the situation

My friends are moving to a new apartment soon and for X-mas i want to get them a giftcard for home furnishings
Q. They are expecting a new baby and moving to a new apartment and I want to get them a giftcard to a home furnishing store, but I cant think of a good one all of a sudden. Any ideas??

A. Target is great for these occasions and they have online gift cards available too.

Is it better to show an empty house or furnished house when selling a home in an estate?
Q. If furnished, keep in mind that the contents of the home will be that of the deceased. Creepy? Or is it better to have the home furnished and looking "homey"?

A. I like to look at them vacant, but not everyone does.

Remove all personal items, all clutter and keep it simple. Remember that you want people to be able to visualize themselves living there. If they feel like they are intruding on someones home they may not be able to do that.

Commercial lighting fixtures - where to get reliable reviews?
Q. We are making a complete lighting plan for a new warehouse and we need a good site with reliable commercial lighting fixtures reviews. Any suggestions?

A. What kind of commercial lighting fixtures are you interested in? If you need a general review site, I would recommend http://www.commerciallightingfixtures.org/.

Does anyone know of a commercial lightset that can be raised on a flagpole to make it a Christmas tree?
Q. This is a 30' pole. I think that someone makes a commercial light "kit" that can be raised on the pole to make it look like a large Christmas tree at night.

A. Due to wind and tangeling the tree you want has to be secure. Here's what you have to do to make the tree, i use to do this for amusement parks in California. You have to make a small steel ring for the top and a larger steel ring for the bottom.Start at the center at bottom of large ring and pull up to small ring connecting each strand then towards the center again, then plug in to a power strip on the pole. Repeat with all strands, the rings must be secured to the pole either by cables or clamps. and to be safe a snorkle lift or cherry picker should be used for safty. Good luck

How to remove exterior paint from clothes?
Q. I got exterior paint on some clothes, and I was wondering if there is a way to remove it without damaging (bleaching) the fabric.

A. If it's a water based paint, then soap and water should remove it.
If it's a spirit based paint, then you'll need something like Turpentine (turps) to remove it.

DON'T put them in the washer until the paint is out as the hot water will 'set' the paint.

Good luck

How much does it cost on average to have a 2 story house (exterior) painted?
Q. We just bought a house and need to get the exterior painted. Should we do it ourselves, or hire a professional? It's a basic 2 story house. Not big at all.

A. Hello,
I am a contractor and I might be able to answer this question more acurate. There are a few aspects to determine a price of an exterior job.
1) how big is the home? ( yours though is a small home)
2) How much damage is done to boards( If wooden exterior) and/or paint).
I usually charge somthing between $1000- $3000 depending on the scope of the job.
Some people feel uncomfortable to work on the ladders; If you have worked on the ladders before and feel comfortable you can do it, if not you should look for scaffolding systems. Make sure that you prime and caulk boards property to prevent early water damage/decay to the bords. recently home depot ( BEHR) offers a new product that one coat of it does the job for prime and paint( Two in one).
If you decide to hire a professiional contractor, make sure he or she is licensed and have liablety insurance.
if you have any questions do not hesitate to e-mail me.
Best Regards

What brand should I stick to when buying home appliances?

Q. So, I want to buy new home appliances for my new house but not sure which brands are most reliable. Currently I am thinking of buying a refrigerator, washing machine, microwave, and put range hoods on my kitchen. Some brands that I consider are Samsung, Fischer and Paykel, Electrolux, and BOSCH. Which of the best brands for common home appliances? Thanks

A. Well for a washer dryer set I recommend Maytag. In 44 years I have had 3 sets of Maytag and NO REPAIRS.

Dishwasher, I recommend KITCHEN AID In 35 years the Frigidaire lasted 6 years and two ;Kitchen aids have lasted at least 15 years each. I cannot remember when I got the current on. But I keep it really clean in the bottom so it still does a great job.

lI like Kenmore for a stove and the Microwave/ hood. By combining those two you do not take up counter space.

I think I have a Frigidaire refrigerator, but previously had a GE model that was still running after 28 years.

When I upgraded all of these appliances we dropped out electric bill $100.00 a month. We also changed to all fluorescent throughout the house. Our hot water heater is 35 years old and still works great. I know we could save more on the electric bill but it works so well, I hate to spend the money when it isn't necessary just now.

We also have a 5 ton heat pump by TRANE, at 9 years 11 month and one week out compressor went out
It was replaced for free the warrantee was for 10 years. ASTOUNDING DON'T YOU THINK.

What brand you recommend when it comes to home appliances?
Q. I need new home appliances for my home but not sure which brands are reliable. I am thinking of buying a small appliances, washing machine, and small microwave ovens. Some brands that I consider are Samsung, Kithcen Aid, GE, and BOSCH. Which of the best brands for home appliances?

A. Depends on prices and features: For entertainment I would stick with Samsung. I have Samsung microwave and Whirlpool everything else big, except dishwasher which is a GE brand - and I have to keep cleaning the filter on it which I have never had to do with other dishwashers.

Q. My friend is thinking to rent her house, and she said it will have no home appliances include fridge. I once heard before that Nevada requires installing certain appliances in a house. Do you know what kind of home appliances has to be equipped in a house for rent in Nevada?

A. There is no law but it would be really hard to rent a house without appliances.

What type of bedding do you like best for hamsters?

Q. Has anyone tried the shaved pine for hamster bedding? I found some but it looks like pine dust instead of shavings? What do you think?

A. i don't understand why people are getting thumbs down on the use of cedar and pine, some people like to argue "oh, it has never hurt my hamsters, and its fine for you too!" this is completely wrong, cedar and pine releases toxins into the air when urinated on, and over time cause respiratory problems, and if long enough, death, its so sad but its so preventable, you should never purchase cedar or pine wood shavings or dust, any type of dust shouldnât be used because it gets in the hamsterâs eyes, and can cause repiratory problems

the ONLY wood shavings you should be using are aspen wood shavings, they are safe for the hammy, and absorb odor fairly well, its also fairly cheap, the only downside to this is that sometimes there can be a particularly sharp piece, and can cause cuts on your hammyâs feet =\

my favorite type of bedding by far is carefresh, it is the best as absorbing smell, making a soft bed, and it comes in bigger pieces so it wonât get kicked out of the wire cage as much as other bedding will, the only downside is that it can be a tad expensive, but its really worth it

yesterdayâs news is also a very good bedding, it is made of recycled newspaper, it is soft, absorbent, and has other good characteristics like carefresh, downside being that it isnât as widely available as carefresh is, and i have yet to find it in a pet store near me

timothy hay is another bedding widely used, its probably the cheapest bedding to buy, but I personally donât like timothy hay, it doesnât help with smell, it is ALWAYS getting kicked out of the cage, and the sharp edges of the hay can cut the hamsters feet

there are also pellet forms of bedding, I have never used this kind, but its fairly inexpensive, plus it is very good at absorbing odors, the only thing i can think about it that would be bad, is it probably would get kicked out the cage constantly because of its small size

oh btw, donât use newspaper either, the ink on the paper is bad for the hamsters if they ingest it, some hamsters donât have a problem, but most die from ink poisoning, so donât run the risk with your hamster and donât use newspaper

EDIT: THANK YOU hamsterzgurl for just copying my answer, thats really mature, and is against the rules

At what age can I start butting ârealâ bedding on my 2 year olds bed?
Q. I hate that I do not have ârealâ bedding on my 2 year olds bed yet? When Can or should I start doing this? I would love to go in and see a bed that is made up and not just a crib sheet.
And I am not sure that they will even sleep under the sheets!

A. Like yesterday :) Two is usually the age where they can start using real bedding so have at it!

What is the best bedding that neutralises odours for pet mice?
Q. What bedding for mice is the best for neutralising mice's wee and poo odours?

A. I use aspen bedding for my rabbits. it is proven to be completely safe and it truly eliminates the smell. it would be the same for mice, i'm sure, as it's for small pets in general.

What's the best way to care for & clean ceramic floors?

Q. I recently got ceramic floors put it, but I don't know the best way to care for them or clean them? What products do you recommend? Also, we have 2 dogs & these floors act like a magnet for hair.

A. In my old house i has smooth ceramic floors. At my new house i have bumpy ceramic floors. If your have grout that's another thing to maintain.
If you have the smooth or bumpy ceramic floors make sure that you sweep the floors daily. You can keep dirt build you mop the floor every other day at least. I like to clean my floors every day.
The only thing with bumpy ceramic floors is that you have to spend a little more time keeping them in tip-top-shape. Sometimes you may need to scrub to get it nice and clean.
For the grout you can also buy liquid that will make it water proof. Grout tends to take in water. Buying this can help your grout from becoming dark and ugly 9it can become brittle if it holds in a lot of water). You can go to your local HomeDepot to buy it, I'm pretty sure they sell them there. While you are there you can see many other products to care for your new ceramic floors.

Hope this helped some. :)

How to drill a screw hole in ceramic floor tile?
Q. We just installed ceramic floor tile. We removed a set of bifold doors and will be replacing them with by-pass doors. Fot the bypass doors, a center guide for the doors needs to be attached in the center on the tile floor.

What type of drill bit? What size? One slightly smaller than screw like drilling wood or not? Any helpful hints, tips also appreciated! Thanks!

A. From your hardware store get plastic screw plugs to suit the screw you want to fit. get the corresponding masonery bit also get a smaller one to drill first. It is also easier yo drill a small hole and make it the right size than ues the right size and make it bigger.
Don't use a nail and a hammer as mentioned eairler as you may eaisly crack the tile if it is not glued to the surface fully

Is there likely to be a problem if I use ceramic floor-tile adhesive to lay porcelain floor-tiles?
Q. I bought a huge tub of Tile-A-Floor Ceramic floor-tile adhesive. My wife then changed her mind about the floor-tiles and the ones we have now are ceramic. I can't get my money back on the adhesive. Would I encounter problems using the adhesive intended for ceramic tiles to lay a porcelain tile floor?

A. You may..Since ceramic is more pourous than porcelain it may not grip as well. A latex modified thin set is the way to go.The newer mastics stay a bit pliable and since you ll be walking on them I never ;ike to use a pliable glue on floor tiles.GL

What is the difference between a floor plan and a floor finish plan?

Q. Can you also give an example on what things are to be placed in a floor plan and floor finish plan.
Thanks!

A. Floor plan is the whole layout of the house from bird's eye view.

Floor finish is what you use to make the floors look good.

what causes bubbles in floor finish?
Q. I had this happen when I finished some floors yesterday. The floor is black & red v.c.t. and the bubbles kind of look like drops of water hardened under the floor finish. It didn't happen until I applied the 2 coat & only got worse with the 3rd. I gave extremely sufficient dry time, a lot more than usual (hours) and the weather here was extremely dry & sunny. I have never had this problem.
The floor was given 1 hour to dry with a lot of air flow in about 85 degree weather. The area that bubbled is just as you walk inside the building, about 2 rows of tile deep.(2 ft.) They aren't really bubbled, but look like it, you can barely feel it. Seems like it is somewhat like a shallow pitted effect?
By the way, I am a janitorial service...I have never seen this..kind of wild but my dad has been in the flooring business for 40 years and said he was unsure unless there is water trapped under the tile and coming through. But I appreciate everyones help. I think it may be air.

A. Sereral possibilities.

Air entrainment.. either during pouring or during brushout..

I like using a lambswool applicator for floors, which puts down a smooth coat.

Pulling the coat too quickly can entrain air.. try a slower motion.

Too THICK a coat in your DRY conditions may be causing the coat to skim too fast and not let the microscopic air bubbles out. You can add a retarder (like Penetrol for oil base finishes). This will let the finish level out. The draw back is more dust

Finally, water-based finishes are less likely to form bubbles since each coat is thinner and can level out

What type of floor finishes would you recommend for the following cases?Justify your answer please...?
Q. What type of floor finishes would you recommend for the following cases?Justify your answer.
a) A chemical laboratory
b) A hospital
c) A garage
d) A bath room

A. a) Chemical resistant coating on a concrete floor.
This will allow for a variety of spills without degrading the concrete's strength

b) Jointed flooring system
This will allow for an easy installation on a large surface area. It will also allow spills to be cleaned up easily without any seeping through.

c) Concrete floor with a standard sealant
This will keep the dust down and allow for easy cleaning or such things as oil spills. It will help prevent permanent staining of the concrete,

d) Ceramic tiling
With the large amount of moisture that this flooring will be subjected tom you need a material that is impervious to moisture. Ceramic deters the growth of mold and mildew as it is a nonporous surface.

Hope this helps!

Looking for contemporary log home interior pics?

Q. My husband and I were looking to build a log home, but only if we can have a somewhat modern/contemporary look for the interior. Neither one of us are really into the primitive or Americana decor, but we do like the look of the lighter log home interiors like this one:

http://www.mhwood.com/images/image41.jpg

Anyone know of any log home interior pictures that have a modern look?

Can you help me identify and locate an old home interior picture?
Q. I can remember almost 30 years ago my mother bought me a home interior picture that was in a very heavy metal frame with a rounded glass, the print was a small boy kneeling and praying into a beam shining down on him.
I know that I have seen the picture in some bibles and I would like to know the name of the print. I would also know how I might be able to buy the picture, frame, glass etc. that was purchased for me. I have tried the homeco and the home int. web site but without the name of the print I'm having no luck.

A. http://www.sonyaharrisgiftsandcollectibles.com/images/tn_Boy_Praying.jpg

is that the picture? You may also want to go to art.com and search praying

Finding out how much home interior is worth?
Q. I have some 70's era home interior and need to see if it is worth anything. I can't find anywhere to figure that out.

A. Look around your local antique dealers....many are dealing in the retro items now..ask them..it will give you a start, then you can price the piece accordingly if you wish to sell them. You can also google searches for items similar to what you have to see what people are asking for them. Just remember, you can ask what you want, but you might not get it, so there can be a large variance in the prices you see...take the middle ground to be safe.

I need wall color ideas for my bathroom?
Q. I'm going to paint the walls tomorrow and I still haven't got a clue what color I want! I don't mind going with bold colors like black or bright red, I just want it to look professional. Also, does anyone know of any easy techniques I can use to get an interesting texture on the walls? I'm up for any of your ideas. Include any accent colors or other bathroom design ideas. Keep in mind I've already put in new light fixtures, which are a soft yellow color.
Thanks in advance!

A. Why not try a really modern look for your bathroom, using black and lime-green. If your suite and tiles are white, this will keep the room fresh and bright, and won't look too dark. If I was using these 2 colors, I would use black as the main color, and lime green as the accent.

Black can be a difficult color to paint with, so you may want to try a dark brown or a dark gray instead, both of which will give dramatic, but sophisticated results.

With bold colors, plain flat walls would look best I think, but if you want to add some texture to your walls, a really easy way of doing it, is to just mix some builder's sand in with your paint. It comes out quite heavily textured with little lumps and bumps in it (sorry, it's quite hard to describe).

Bring out the lime-green accent with matching towels, shower curtain, bathmat etc. Some gorgeous green plants, and especially those long stalks of bamboo, would look great

Does anyone know where I can find design ideas for decorating a small toilet and bathroom on a budget?
Q. I have a small bathroom and toilet which I would like to decorate myself but have absolutely no design ideas. I am looking for some simple, attractive designs but everything on the web seems to be too plush and costly. Does anyone have any ideas as to where I can view photos of simple bathroom designs? What wood flooring should I use for my table tennis room?

Q. What wood flooring should I use for my table tennis room? Some recommended floating interlocking laminate flooring with good underlays is good but I don't know what the hell are they talking about. I was wondering if some could suggest and explain some wood that can be used to play Table Tennis. To help Table Tennis requires good shock absorption and cushion from underlays. Those expert wood people out there please help.

A. Vinyl floor tiles are probably the best choice for your play room. These tiles are easy to install and are extremely durable

How to prep subfloor for wood flooring?
Q. I've installed prefinished wood flooring before but the kitchen has ceramic tile glued to 1/4" plywood, which is then (I assume) glued and nailed to the original sub floor. I need to remove the tile and 1/4" plywood so I can put our new wood flooring on the original subfloor. What is the best way to do this? I was planning on using a hammer and chisel but is there a specialized tool i can use?

A. Yes there is.. A hammer and wide chisel... In your case , and I ve removed 100s of floors over the years and that what you need to do. Hammer and chisel off the tile, using caution. Chips FLY!! Then you can use a crow bar to get under the wood and go at it.If your lucky it was screwed down and you can unscrew a lot of them. But most will pull through the 1/4" luan and then deal with that later.
Your lucky it was installed wrong this is an easier rip out, Suggestion. Safety glasses, long sleeve shirt sand ear protection to prevent chips in the ears ( I m not kidding) Cover doorways to help prevent dust and put a fan in a window to suck dust out.
Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications GL

What type of cleaning technique should I use on bamboo wood flooring?
Q. I just recently bought a house and the house has bamboo laminate flooring what type of cleaner should I used to clean the floor. Will a steam mop do the trick? I was told Murray's oil is a good cleaner for wood flooring.

A. Do not use Murphy's. Use Bona wood floor cleaner. They even make a spray mop that is similar to a wet swiffer.

What is the linear coverage (length) of a roll of double coverage roll roofing material?

Q. How many feet long is a roll of double coverage roofing material?

A. One roll of this product (also called 19" selvedge, duplex, or half-lap roofing) will cover 50 sq ft. Technically speaking, this means the roll is 35' 4" long. The rolls are usually a couple of inches long.

Keep in mind that the material is 36" wide and actually laps 19" -- just a bit more than half, so you only get 17" of coverage per run.

Rolled rubber roofing material, where can I buy it?
Q. I'm looking for a retail dealer in east Texas that sells rolled rubber roofing material at least 8 ft. wide.

A. don't think HD has it. and it is not really a DIY product. i've used it a few times and there are a few special methods you need to know.

try this site, they have someone in texas. i think you want to ask for edpm roofing: http://www.roofingproductsunlimited.com/aboutus.html

try: http://www.gaf.com/General/GAFIntro_MAIN.asp

also try: Modern Building Supply. 31209 State Highway 64. Wills Point, TX 75169 (903) 865-6762 [they're a little east of Dallas]

We need to replace roofing material-shingles or the metal ones that seem to be getting popular-?
Q. We have a simple 2 story farmhouse in the midwest US. Anyone have pros and cons on roofing materials, as to cost, durability, etc.? Thanks a bunch!

A. a good shingle roof is fine. but with the price of petroleum based products going so high, a metal roof may be more economical in the long run.

What color paint and window treatments should we choose?

Q. My wife and I are about to renovate our living room. We plan to repaint our walls, add new window treatments, and possibly add chair rails and crown molding.

We plan on keeping our black leather sofa and red leather easy chairs. We also have medium brown hard wood floors and dark brown baseboards and doors. The walls are currently a textured egg shell white. Lastly we have ample natural lighting from the sliding glass door and large living room windows.

Please give us suggestions on what color to paint our walls and a suggested window treatment for the sliding glass door and windows. If possible provide a web link to show the colors and treatments.
BTW, we are looking for a more modern or exotic look. Oh, we're not a fan of wall paper. Would beige paint look ok?

A. First, you have to decide the style that you like. Is it traditional? Modern? Exotic? Then decorate your home accordingly. If you like exotic influences but don't want to go overboard, just have accent pieces here and there, e.g. use cushions with African pattern or have mini elephant statues or Chinese-inspired vases or something.

Since you don't mention it, I'll just give you a suggestion based on what I like. I prefer a traditional look, just because I think it's both elegant and comfortable.

Since you have red arm chairs, why don't you have a bit more red in the room? Maybe a red rug for the living area? Or red cushions for the black sofa? Make sure the textures of the cushion and the leather don't clash, though. Or you could have red curtains or walls. If you do go with curtain, make sure it's lined or it's a blackout material, because otherwise the light entering your house when the curtains are closed may be too eerie. Oh, instead of curtains, maybe you could use Roman blinds; stay away from vertical or horizontal blinds. (Except if you got the latter in the wooden varieties - those look so elegant!)

Personally, I think it's best to keep the curtains a bit more neutral, though. So, maybe use something more beige or sheer curtains. Instead, use red on the walls, BUT don't go crazy. I think the more burgundy, dark red colours would look better than bright reds. Also, depending on your budget, you could choose to use wallpapers instead. With wallpapers, you could play around with patterns as well. I'd go with beige/cream wallpaper with red accents, and red borders. That would look awesome! Or, if you prefer to paint, your current wall seems okay, maybe just paint ONE wall red. For instance, if you have a fireplace, maybe that wall could be red, and the rest could be more neutral?

Otherwise, you could play up the browns of the wood floor and door. That would be great as well. Play with textures. Look for curtain material that's not plain to prevent your home from looking drab.

Or, you could actually keep both the walls and curtains neutral, and instead have more wooden furniture, and keep your house bright. This will give the feel of a larger, more open space.

Also, play with lights. You know how there are the yellowish lights and the white, daylight sort of lights? They can really change the atmosphere of your room. So decide which one you like better, and then see if they'll go with your decor. I mean, if you like the white, daylight sort of light (like the sort they use in offices), then that probably won't work with red walls. The yellowish lights would work better in that case, as it creates a certain ambiance. However, I would go with your light preference first, since you spend more time at home at night. So if you don't like yellow lights but insist on using them just so they go with your decor, you probably will not like spending time in that room.

What type of window treatments should i use for our basement appartment windows?
Q. We live in a basement apartment where the windows are at ceiling height, small, and wide. Im having trouble with finding nice window treatments. Im tired of blinds, and ugly curtains. Someone help?

A. Have you considered cellular shades? They're not "industrial" looking like mini-blinds can be, and they'll add some texture and fabric to your windows. They're also great insulators, which you may need if you're living somewhere with cold winters.

Symphony Double Honeycomb cellular shades offer tons of colors to choose from so you can choose a pattern that fits your style. You can find them at http://www.blindcrafter.com/Symphony/symphony.cfm. And if they're not your style, you can do your window treatment research at BlindCrafter.com, too. They have a variety of styles and fabrics to choose from.

I hope that this insight helps.

Happy Designing!

What type of window treatment should I use for sliding glass doors?
Q. I want modern and sophisticated window treatments for sliding glass doors. I have been able to pull most of my decor together, but I cannot figure out the best way to cover my sliding glass doors. They are approximately 7' tall x 10' wide. I enjoy the light that comes in during the day, but wish for privacy at night.

A. Because 10' is a lot of window space, you may want to consider a window treatment that is simple and effective without being fussy to use and always looks fresh.

I would install a wooden drapery rod 5" above the uppermost molding with a center support and install the brackets 12" beyond the sides of the sliders. Do not use a skimpy rod or it will look out of proportion to the sliders. The reason to have the rod extended beyond the width of the sliders is so that when the drapery is opened, there is some stack space for the drapery in order to allow more sunlight into the room. By hanging the rod higher than the window, you are adding height to the room and also leaving wall space so the drapery hardware can be seen instead of being distracted by the molding.

A sophisticated window treatment is one that is timeless and looks as good open as it does closed. May I suggest panels with either a box pleat header or a pinch pleat header or a goblet pleat header -- all of which should be hung on the rod from wooden drapery rings. I would use two large panels, one on the left and one on the right. I suggest a wooden rod and wooden rings because metal drapery hardware makes a horrible and annoying noise and the telescoping rods always catch on the rings as you attempt to open and close the drapery. Use drapery wands (long dowel like 'sticks') that you pull to draw the drapes open and closed as not to tug on the fabric and leave stains on the fabric from oils in your hands.

Traverse rods are an effective way to open and close a slider window treatment; however, you will see the ugly utilitarian rod when the drapery are opened. Not sophisticated enough for your taste, I'd say.

Do not select a printed fabric as most people tend to regret a large space with that much busy. Instead try to select a solid fabric with a texture or a tone on tone print or perhaps an embroidered swirl design to keep the eyes moving. Love the fabric you pick and do not settle for anything you have to think twice about because after you buy 21 yards of fabric and lining plus the labor for custom drapery, you do not want to regret your choice.

I hope my words have been helpful.

Is Home Office Furniture Tax Deductible? If so, how much is deductible and what does that really mean?

Q. My home office is based out of Texas.

A. Home office furniture would be tax deductible, as long as you use it only for your business. If you bought a computer for use for the business, a desk to put the computer on, a lamp to shine light on the desk and the computer, a phone line for the computer to connect to the internet, these would all be deductible Home Office Furniture as long as you used them 100% for the business. If you did then 100% of what you paid for them is deductible as a business expense in the year you bought them. The only question is though, is your home office part of a Schedule C business? If so then you can list all the assets on Form 4562 and take section 179 depreciation on them. That will let you write them totally off in the year you bought them. If you have a home office as part of your job requirement, then you would still report the assets on Form 4562 and take section 179 depreciation, but the depreciation would flow through to Form 2106 - Employee Business Expenses, which would in turn flow to Schedule A - Itemized Deductions - Miscellaneous Deductions, and would have to exceed 2% of your AGI for the excess to be deductible.

What are essentials for a home office?
Q. I want to convert a section of our home basement into a home office? What are essentials to creating an excellent home office environment?

A. The first step in creating a home office plan that works is to evaluate what you plan to do in the space.

A home office can have different zones for various tasks, equipment, and furniture needs. A desk and computer area may be one zone, while bookshelves, storage, and filing are another.

Furnishings. Make sure that you allow for adequate desk space for your equipment, and space to store materials, records and supplies.

Outlets. Are there enough electrical outlets to safely accommodate all of your business equipment (computer, telephone, copier, fax, clock and desk lamps)

Invest in a second phone line for your office.

Choose bright colors that will reflect light and keep you in a productive mood.

you'll need some sort of bookshelf-or shelves-and file drawers that are easily accessible without you having to get up.

Bulletin and chalk boards are a great way to keep home office reminders front and center.

accessories like pencil holders and divided containers.

personal art and pictures, family portraits.

A computer, desk chair and obvious things like that also.

Plants help make it more inviting.

Warm lighting, stay away from fluorescent lighting.

Help with becoming a better sales person?
Q. I work for a company called Winport USA. It's a small company that imports school, home, and office furniture. The company actually has really, really nice furniture, that is not common in the US. I have to start calling schools and asking them if they are interested in buying any school furniture. I am supposed to set up a meeting with them if possible, and give them our website address.

I honestly don't even know where to start. This is my first sales job, and the entire company is counting on me. I have no experience whatsoever. Any advice?

Thanks!

A. The trick is to listen. hear what they want or need and fill that gap. Keep working even when everyone says no.

Good luck!

How do I add ceiling lights in my house?

Q. Hello everyone. I had a question about ceiling lights. My living room definitely needs more light and I don't really want to have lamps or halogen lamps everywhere. I'd rather have a clean look with ceiling lights. However, I've never done this before. Someone told me that I would need to make sure that the house was prewired for that. Does anyone have experience with this? Where would I have to go to get this kind of work done? The house was built in 2001. Thank you

A. From your description I believe you're wanting recessed lighting and your house doesn't have to be prewired for it, though you will need to add the correct circuit(s) and wire to incorporate it. I incorporate it into just about every project I do and the key to achieving great aesthetics with it is using the correct size lighting and lighting balance. Where you place this lighting, types, and wattages is key to this balance.

Now, if you're not experienced in lighting or wiring I suggest you hire a professional to work with you on achieving the look and effects you want and this can be successfully incorporated into any decor, contemporary or more traditional.

If you contact me directly I may know someone in your area that can help you. What I can tell you is you need to budget approximately $200.00 per light which includes the light and installation. This is inclusive of ALL work, wiring, drywall/plaster, and painting, if the paint can be successfuly matched; if not, plan on an additional $350.00 to repaint the entire ceiling.

How do I get the bottom electrical outlet to supply power when the ceiling light switch is off?
Q. The bottom outlets in my bedroom supply power only when I have the light switch (that controls the ceiling lights) on. Is there a simple way for me to change this so the bottom outlets are always on? Thanks!

A. The room was probably originally wired that way, where the switch controls the bottom halves of the outlets. That is a good feature, and I would leave it that way. There was no fixture in the ceiling originally; someone else installed it. Now, what they did wrong was wire the fixture to the same switch as the outlets. Here's what you do to solve it:

Take all the wiring apart inside the switch box, and remove it by cutting the side brackets or nails with a reciprocating saw. Remove the box, and cut the hole larger, in order to fit a 2-gang box. In fact, if you have a ceiling fan, make it a 3-gang box. You will want an extra place to hold a fan speed control, to avoid having to use any pull-chains on your fan. Re-wire the new switch box, putting the grounds together, and the neutrals together, each with a wire nut. Take the always-hot wires, and add one pigtail per switch. Cap with wirenut. Attach each pigtail to a switch, then connect each switch wire to the appropriate switch. Everything will be switched separately then.

How do crickets keep getting into fluorescent ceiling lights?
Q. I have outdoor fluorescent lights on my veranda and fluorescent ceiling lights in my garage and for some reason crickets seem to keep getting trapped in them. I have no idea how they even get that high up there let alone inside the actual fluorescent lights. Anyone have an idea?

A. crickets are very good climbers and the light fixtures will not be air tight....they are attracted to the light so climb or fly towards them, once there climbing about they find openings in the fixtures they can enter

Where to begin the custom-home building process?

Q. Can someone point me to a good consumer-oriented website or offer advice on the steps toward getting a custom home built? My wife and I have a couple lots in mind, we're narrowing down a list of floor plans. We could use some guidance as far what tasks â and in what order â we should be planning for.

A. the process is going to be different for different areas. i would recommend going to amazon.com and buying a few books on how to be your own general contractor, and how to build your own home. (i have i think is called "building your own home on a shoe string") some go into more detail than others. but read a few and get aquainted with some of the terms and such. they will also go through the steps.
but here are the basic steps.
1) find /buy land. make sure it meets all of your requirements, and the local requirements for building. consider a perk test, septic planning, access roads, frontage, any minimum size requirements.
2) site planning. where is the septic located (or are you on town sewer and water). where is the house going, where is the well going (if not on town water) where is the electric going to come in from. and which way will the house be oriented (stake out the corners)
3) excavation and foundation (this will go off the plans that you have decided on) (be prepared for the unexpected, who knows what they will find when they dig)
4) framing
5) skinning (roof and exterior walls and maybe siding, windows) inside is now protected from the elements)
6) electric, plumbing, hvac
7) insulating
8) interior walls, floors, ceilings
9) appliances, painting, finish electrical and plubing fixtures.
10) final walkthrough, cleanup, touchup.

those are the basics

Home building industry price elasticity of demand elastic or inelastic?
Q. I have been searching for an explanation of what this even means and I cannot find anything that is helping me. Can someone please help me. I need to take the home building industry and focus on how it is affected by the economy. I also need to know if it is elastic or inelastic and what the price elasticity of supply for this industry is. I really appreciate any help I can get. Thanks!!!

A. Lets start with what the question means. Then you can apply it to the home building industry. In economics and business studies, the price elasticity of demand (PED) is an elasticity that measures the nature and degree of the relationship between changes in quantity demanded of a good and changes in its price.

For all normal goods and most inferior goods, a price drop results in an increase in the quantity demanded by consumers. The demand for a good is relatively inelastic when the quantity demanded does not change much with the price change. Goods and services for which no substitutes exist are generally inelastic. Demand for an antibiotic, for example, becomes highly inelastic when it alone can kill an infection resistant to all other antibiotics. Rather than die of an infection, patients will generally be willing to pay whatever is necessary to acquire enough of the antibiotic to kill the infection.

Inelastic demand is commonly associated with "necessities," although there are many more reasons a good or service may have inelastic demand other than the fact that consumers may "need" it. Demand for salt, for instance, at its modern levels of supply is highly inelastic not because it is a necessity but because it is such a small part of the household budget. (Technology has increased the supply of salt modernly and reduced its historically high price.) Demand for water, another necessity, is highly inelastic for similar supply side reasons. Demand for other goods, like chocolate, which is not a necessity, can be highly elastic.

Substitution serves as a much more reliable predictor of elasticity of demand than "necessity." For example, few substitutes for oil and gasoline exist, and as such, demand for these goods is relatively inelastic. However, products with a high elasticity usually have many substitutes. For example, potato chips are only one type of snack food out of many others, such as corn chips or crackers, and predictably, consumers have more room to turn to those substitutes if potato chips were to become more expensive.

It may be possible that quantity demanded for a good rises as its price rises, even under conventional economic assumptions of consumer rationality. Two such classes of goods are known as Giffen goods or Veblen goods. Another case is the price inflation during an economic bubble. Consumer perception plays an important role in explaining the demand for products in these categories. A starving musician who offers lessons at a bargain basement rate of $5.00 per hour will continue to starve, but if the musician were to raise the price to $35.00 per hour, consumers may perceive the musician's ability to charge higher prices for lessons as an indication of higher quality, thus increasing the quantity of lessons demanded.

PED is determined by a number of factors that essentially all fall under the umbrella of "choice". By choice we mean the power of choice that the consumer of a given good holds to give up the consumption of said good. The greater this choice the more price elastic the good will be and, by contrast, as the balance of this power falls in favour of the supplier the more inelastic the good will be. This is due to the consumer's "Perceived Value". A good which is difficult to replace or give up consuming will have a higher perceived value than that which is more easily replaced thus the consumer will be willing to pay more for such a good. Perceived Value represents the absolute maximum price a consumer is willing to pay for a good. When the price exceeds this level, the consumer will give up consumption of this good.

Availability of Good Quality Substitutes: Easily substitutable goods will enable buyers to switch to an alternative good and thus such goods will exhibit greater elasticity than goods that do not have substitutes available, ceteris paribus (assuming all other variables are equal). It is important to understand that a given good is in essence unique and thus the comparability of the available substitute(s) in terms of quality to the original good is an important sub-variable. The better the substitute(s) can replace the original good in terms of desirability, affordability, practicality etc. the more elastic the good will become. For example, a commuter taking the train to work could switch to taking the bus if faced with rising train fares. However, this may mean more inconvenience and/or longer journey time for example and thus will form part of his consideration before switching that mode of transport and it may take a certain price difference before he will resort to this option representing the substitute's quality. A contrasting inelastic good would be water which is arguably insubstitutable so a local community faced with rising water costs will be left with little choice but to pay the increased costs forming a price inelastic good.
Whether the good is habit forming or obligatory: Addictive drugs, whether psychologically addictive or physically addictive, and other goods where dependency plays a key role will naturally exhibit inelastic properties. At aggregate level, rising costs of such goods are unlikely to reduce demand significantly. Classic examples of such goods would be alcohol and tobacco or in an extreme case, heroin. A heroin addict will virtually go to any length to achieve the next fix irrespective of cost. Governments often place taxes on these types of goods, namely alcohol, tobacco and fuel because of their highly inelastic demand since consequently such goods are assured revenue generators for the treasury.
The proportion of the consumer's income the good represents: Goods which typically make up a small proportion of people's income will exhibit inelastic qualities. Conversely, goods which form a large proportion of people's income will cause greater responses in demand to comparable % increases or decreases in price. For example, if cinema ticket costs rise by 20%, decreases in demand are unlikely to be pronounced. However a 15% drop in a "luxury" good such as a car or LCD Television changes in demand are likely to be relatively greater.
How closely the good is defined: Taking our example from (2), cigarettes in general are, as discussed, an inelastic good. However a particular brand of cigarettes will exhibit far more elastic properties if its price rises. In general therefore, the exact type of good will affect its PED properties.
How closely the consumer (end-user) is defined?: This is an important factor intrinsically related to most of the preceding variables. "Choice" is very subjective and factors 1,2 and 3 vary relative to the individual consumer because every single consumer can potentially have a different Perceived Value of a good. A good that is easily replaceable or habit forming or expensive for one person may well not be for another and thus how well the consumer is defined will affect the PED. At nationwide level, if the cost of butter rises significantly consumers can choose to consume margarine instead but a shop who makes and sells butter cookies will not have this option and thus the PED will be far more inelastic in the latter case. A driver faced with rising petrol bills may opt to switch to using the train. However an airline company has no choice but to absorb rising fuel costs and will according have a much more inelastic demand curve for essentially the same good.
How closely the time period is defined: Generally the greater the time period, the more possible it may be for a good to be replaced with a substitute. Using home energy as an example, a gas user faced with rising gas bills will unlikely be able to switch to electric alternatives overnight due to possibly contractual tie-ins and time needed to change a stove to electric hob for example. However over three months, a switch is far more viable and the PED will be accordingly more elastic. Likewise, prices are dynamic. Over short time periods, prices of substitutes maybe static, over longer periods, the price of substitutes may drop, making them more appealing. [Puiatti, 18:36 10-Nov-07]

Various research methods are used to calculate price elasticity:

Test markets
Analysis of historical sales data
Conjoint analysis
When the price elasticity of demand for a good is inelastic (|Ed| < 1), the percentage change in quantity demanded is smaller than that in price. Hence, when the price is raised, the total revenue of producers rises, and vice versa.

When the price elasticity of demand for a good is elastic (|Ed| > 1), the percentage change in quantity demanded is greater than that in price. Hence, when the price is raised, the total revenue of producers falls, and vice versa.

When the price elasticity of demand for a good is unit elastic (or unitary elastic) (|Ed| = 1), the percentage change in quantity is equal to that in price.

When the price elasticity of demand for a good is perfectly elastic (Ed is undefined), any increase in the price, no matter how small, will cause demand for the good to drop to zero. Hence, when the price is raised, the total revenue of producers falls to zero. The demand curve is a horizontal straight line. A banknote is the classic example of a perfectly elastic good; nobody would pay £10.01 for a £10 note, yet everyone will pay £9.99 for it.

When the price elasticity of demand for a good is perfectly inelastic (Ed = 0), changes in the price do not affect the quantity demanded for the good. The demand curve is a vertical straight line; this violates the law of demand. An example of a perfectly inelastic good is a human heart for someone who needs a transplant; neither increases nor decreases in price affect the quantity demanded (no matter what the price, a person will pay for one heart but only one; nobody would buy more than the exact amount of hearts demanded, no matter how

Do electrical kitchen appliances need replacing/checking after a while?

Q. I've been using the same kitchen appliances for about 6 years or so. One thing that came to mind; do ovens (both conventional kitchen ovens and microwave ovens) deteriorate enough over long periods of time to warrant checking or replacing for safety concerns?

And what about fridges (refrigerators for you Americans) and freezers? From my limited knowledge there are no real hazards, but I know little about how they work.

A. It is a good idea to check the operation of an oven and a refrigerator every now and then with an accurate thermometer.

Refrigerators operate on freon to cool them. And, if the refrigerator and/or freezer won't get down to the correct temperature (35F for the refrigerator and about 0F for the freezer), this could be an indication of the freon leaking out, the compressor not running as efficiently, the door seals wearing out, the temperature sensors wearing out, etc.

Same thing with an oven. If you do a lot of cooking and baking, it's a good idea to always have a thermometer in the oven to verify the interior temperature (you can get one at any cooking supply store). Even brand new ovens may not accurately maintain the selected temperature for a variety of reasons. And, the only way to know that the temperature is correct is to measure it with a thermometer. If the oven is older and can't maintain the correct temperature, this could be an indication of a temperature sensor going bad, a temperature control circuit getting tired, or even a problem with a burner (especially in a gas oven).

Beyond that, appliances usually work just fine for years, and then one day just fail. And, there's no real preventative maintenance you can do to avoid it, other than keeping them clear and using them in accordance with the operating instructions that came with them.

Does anyone know the song in the mastercard commercial with the kitchen appliances?
Q. The commercial is called "Dinner Out" and it's one of the new Mastercard commercials. It has a fancy lookin' couple leave and then the kitchen appliances have a little party with this really neat song playing in the background and I would like to know what it is.

A. Actually it is called Via con me, not viE con me. Great song!

where do you buy your kitchen appliances?
Q. I'm buying a whole suite of kitchen appliances (fridge, gas range, micro wave and dishwasher). I'm likely going to choos either LG, GE Profile or Whirlpool Gold. Any good suggestions on where to go? I'm currently looking at Lowes. Best Buy appears to be a little overpriced at the moment.

A. I have bought some things (deep freeze, sewing machine.. etc) at Sears. I am presently investigating prices at Sears, the Bay (Canada only I think), The Brick, Future shop, Home Depot, Rona, Best Buy and Ikea. So far Ikea and Sears are coming out ahead although Home Depot does have some good sales in their stores sometimes (If they are overstocked in something, or an item is discontinued, you can pick up those items for quite cheap. You have to visit the individual stores though). There is a website that actually tells you which brand names are built by which company.. I know 'Kenmore' appliances are built by a number of different manufacturers! so if you really want a whirlpool, but at a cheaper price.. buy a Kenmore with certain numbers in the model #. See the link below.

Where can I find used building materials?

Q. I am looking for a website that sells used building materials in the Syracuse NY area anyone have any idea of a link for them?
I tried to do a search for building restoration materials but everything comes up from out of state or in Canada.
I am looking for the material in or near Syracuse NY Not Canada

A. I usually go to FreeCycle.org to find used building materials. Instead of throwing stuff away people post their things on this site. It is set up locally by chapter and I believe the Syracuse area has one. It is a great resource.

In the past I have found tons of old deck materials and other lumber that is in great shape.

The best part is that it is free!!!! People are not allowed to charge for their products. It is very cool.

What local building materials are available in Haiti?
Q. What building materials are readily available to construct housing in post-quake Haiti? Is their concrete production local or imported? Do they have wood available and if so what kind (hardwood, softwood, timber)? Also are earth-made dwellings common in vernacular architecture?

I'm doing a school design project on this topic and I'd like to her from preferably a first hand source who has been there and had a chance to see for themselves what the situation is like.

A. There is still lots of rubble.

And still so much devsataion (n Port-au-Prince), that they can't get machines and backhoes to help clear it up.

But some have been very cleverly been using hand-cranked rubble crushers. It takes 2-3 guys to operate, two to crank, one to put chunks into the hopper. But they are slowly clearing their own neighborhoods - AND using the crushed rubble as a building material for concrete, foundations, new bricks, and the like. Ingenious.

How do I salvage building materials in Northern Illinois?
Q. I am wondering how people get started or find used/ recycled building materials (wood etc). Obviously I could buy them from a salvaged materials dealer but how I can do this myself? I have several projects on the burner and am just trying to figure out where to begin.

A. The real question is, what are you looking for? If you are looking for lumber, ask someone that removes and replaces it. If you are looking for old hardware or plumbing fixtures then talk to a plumber.
If you don't want to go to a dealer, go to their source. Bypass the dealer and contact the contractors that tear out the materials.
For the most basic start, contact your local Home Builders Association to get a list of contractors that may work in the area you are looking.

L.L. Bean has nice bedding but the designs are not particularly exciting.

What happens when you use interior paint outside?

Q. My mom wants to use her interior paint on her exterior trim. I told her she should NOT and she wants to know why. What problems or issues will she run into if she does use it?

A. interiior paint is not designed to be attacked my the elements, rain, dust, sunlight etc. It will peal off and she will have to do it all again in six months time.

What is the difference in ingredients between exterior and interior paints?
Q. If it is algaecides and herbacides, or whatever, can I add those ingredients to interior paint and use it externally? What would I buy and how much would I add to the gallon of interior paint to compensate?

A. It is the strength of the polymers and the acrylics..some exterior paints have insecticide and fungicide to prevent bugs from nesting and mildew forming..You would spend more money trying to make this work than you would by simply buying a gallon of exterior paint..And then the formula wouldn't be right, and some of these ingredients are illegal to purchase without a license

am I liable for interior paint work done over a year ago?
Q. I did this interior paint job(walls&trim) over a year ago and now they are telling me they have a problem.Am I liable?

A. do you feel you are responsible? Repeat customers is the best way to grow a business. If you repair the problem, I assure you that if they ever need painting again, or any one they know needs painting, they will call you, if you fix it. Measure what the cost for you to repair it is, and decide if its worth your reputation to repair it. Let your conciense be your guide. I would repair it if it wasn't abuse

Would a picnic blanket be considered as outdoor furniture?
Q. I am doing a furniture project and I am trying to find out if a picnic blanket would be considered a kind of outdoor furniture? I read online that furniture is the mass noun for the movable objects ('mobile' in Latin languages) intended to support various human activities such as seating and sleeping in beds, to hold objects at a convenient height for work using horizontal surfaces above the ground, or to store things.

A. A blanket is a 'soft furnishing' rather than 'furniture'.

How much should i charge to install wood flooring ?

Q. As a handyman, how much do i charge per sq.ft to install oak wood flooring? They all need to be glued and there will be alot of cuts because the wood needs to curve in an s shape. There is 1000 sq.ft. I installed 1600 sq.ft before but did not charge my father in law. Thanks for your help.

A. For glue down wood flooring, 4 dollars a s.f. is about what you should be charging.

Can you place wood flooring on an uneven floor?
Q. there is a long hallway in my house I'd like to have wood flooring. but my contractor says that at the end of the hallway there is a slight incline. he says wood flooring would have to stop there and be replaced with carpet. esthetically I think it would look awful. is what he says true or is there another way to keep it all wood?

A. Hardwood floor installation can be slowed by an uneven subfloor. Before installing hardwood floors, use a straight edge to find the humps and dips in the subfloor. Then, using a floor leveling compound or asphalt shingles, shim the dips so the floor is level.

How many boxes would you have to buy of Laminate wood flooring to cover a 10x15 room?
Q. if it says it does 16sq ft per box?

I have a 1400sq ft home. and the math a did at 50 bucks a box, it would be well over 5k to do my home?

and at that price how does anyone afford to do wood flooring... even the fake kind? Am I figuring it wrong?

A. Are you doing one room or a whole house?? Your question suggests one room 10 X 15= 150 sq ft. You would divide that by the square footage listed on the box. In your example 16 sq ft= 9.37 or 10 boxes @ 50.00 = $500.00. To do the whole house could very well be $5000.00 for materials alone. Add to that the cost of the underlayment about $60.00 for a 100 sq ft roll. Are you sure you were looking at laminate and not engineered wood flooring? Laminate flooring cannot be refinished. Once it is scratched it's scratched! Engineered wood can be refinished once. I would suggest shopping around a bit more.
