Why is the security light on my Camaro coming on all of the sudden?

Q. I've had a '97 Camaro for a few months and all of the sudden the security light is coming on when I try to start it disabling the starter. I've been using the same key the whole time. I have had no problems with this car until now. I have to wait 3 minutes and then it will start. The key is in good shape. Not dirty or wet. Is there an underlying issue I should check out? Thanks.

A. Do NOT replace the ignition by yourself! My car's ignition was replaced by the dealer (not a Chevy dealer, just a used car lot) and now my light will NEVER go off. Take it to a Chevy dealer and they CAN help you. If it is the ignition then they will be able to fix it, but if you replace the ignition yourself then you risk having that light on forever because the ignition was not programmed into the car's security system. The guy I got my car from said they didn't have a key for my car and that is why they replaced the ignition but if he would have actually read the owner's manual it says that if you take it to a dealer they can make a new key that is made specifically for that ignition. I don't know what could be wrong with it, but if you have the funds to do so, I would take it to a Chevy dealer.

How to get past a security light?
Q. I'm sneaking out tonight, and we have security lights in our yard. How do you get past them without making them turn on?

A. best way is to go to your circuit breaker in the garage and find the breaker for the security lights/that side of the house. turn it off. then wala, problem solved.
another way would be to remove the sensor on the lights
remove the light bulbs
avoid the lights/sensor
tape the sensor up (during the day or something)
or as someone else said, avoid emitting Infra red radiation

actually, I think the way you COULD do this seriously, is the following:

find/buy one of those "space blankets". (reflective blankets meant to keep you warm by keeping in all IR heat) you can buy em at walmart and camping store as well as the kennedy space center if your interested haha.

then, cover yourself in it COMPLETELY shielding yourself form the camera, and go for it, walk, dont run, past the sensor, and you may be able to sneak past it because the blanket will hide your IR radiation from view of the sensor.
I haven't tried it, but I think it might work, seeing as how the blankets ar meant to keep IR radiation in. so they wont let it out and will act like a sort of camo from the sensor.
btw, the blankets go for like a max of 20 bucks.

*edit*
The walking slow thing, may work a bit, but you must understand how this stuff works to understand that it wont work well. maybe at all. the security light sensor is looking for a "change" in the IR temperature it is sensing. so if you move really slow, it might not detect a change. but then again, it might. its not worth trying. US a highly reflective material like a space blanket or shiny shiny aluminum.

What shall I do If my security light comes on in my chevy impala?
Q. Im having a passlock problem in my 2002 chevy impala. The security light blinks on and the car wont start. I have to wait like 10 minutes before it resets itself. The dealor says it cost 600.00 to fix and no one else would touch it. Ive called around. Is there an easier way out of this?

A. all chevrolets have this problem, even mine. this summer i found out what my problem was. first the light blinks then, my tahoe woulg turn off while i applied the break peddle. killing all power to vehicle.
chevrolrt dealer told me same thing $600 to fix.

i thought the all\arm system was holding it off, on anti-thift, cause i could hear the alarm box making clicking sounds

the problem with mine was a loose positive battery post.
even tho the post was tight, just wasn't tight enough'
post was tight into the battery, but loose between both cables that hooked to the positive pose, not much just enough to cause problems.

what i did was put a lock washer between both cables, and installed cables in a v shape from bottom looking up.

havent had the problem again.

around here, i know at least 7 people with same problem

give it a try, before spending $600

Does any one have any experience with having their home build on their own land?
Q. Since cost of new home still pretty high in North East region, I am wondering if any one have experience with having a New home build on their own land.
I am thinking about buying a land and then having a home build with developer so I can save some money in process.
2 Q
1. Is that a good idea?
2. Will I save some money by doing this?

A. Building your own home can be a great experience. You get to be involved in all of the decision-making process, you choose exactly how you want things to look, etc.

It can be a nightmare though---bad contractors, delays because of weather, etc.

Just make sure that you are very careful when contracting, and don't try to start building in the middle of winter!

You can save money by building on your own, but don't use cheap contractors that will use substandard materials. Research everything and everyone you use carefully. You can also save money by working on some of it yourself---if you have skills in construction. Don't try to take on a job that you aren't qualified at(like wiring---when you have no idea about being an electrician!!) because you could end up paying for it later on.

Best of luck!

What are the issues with copper plumbing in a home built in 1988?
Q. I have a friend who has a home that has copper plumbing. The residence was built in 1988, and she was told by a neighbor that copper plumbing is bad and has to be removed/replaced in order to keep the value of the home for resale. This doesn't seem to make sense and the home DOES NOT have any plumbing issues to date. The neighbor cautioned that copper plumbing can burst. Is there any ring of truth to this or is the neighbor thinking of something else. A home built in 1988 doesn't seem that old to me.
Please help. All answers are welcome. Thanks.
Additional details. Here is the suspected issue:

Different metals or types of pipe: copper and galvanized iron, were directly connected in the potable water supply system

From this point of view, we are told the entire plumbing in the home needs to be changed. Can this be right?

A. If the copper pipe is stressed, it will create a leak, but only if stressed. By this I mean thin wall, kinks, etc.

I have never heard of copper pipes devaluing a home. If anything, copper will add value compared to CPVC or galvanized. If there are no issues with leakage or significant corrosion, leave it.

What color dining room table should I get for my nook?

Q. My entire kitchen cabinetry is oak wood that is stained a medium-mojagany. In my nook area, I have a ton of cabinetry in there, so I'm thinking if I try to match the table to the cabinets, it may be too much. I was thinking a lighter color table... does anyone have suggestions? It cannot be glass of any sort because we have 5 young kids that will use the table for each meal. Thanks in advance!

A. Go with something painted that coordinates with your kitchen outside of the cabinet color/grain -- cream, blue, green, yellow, red, or black. Or change materials -- get a metal and slate/tile table. Or, mix light and dark wood tones so it breaks up the look, but looks deliberate, not mismatched. Or go ahead and match your cabinets for the top of the table, but have the rest be metal or painted another color.

I have a split level home built in 1986. What changes can I make to update it and increase my resale value?
Q. Upper Level - 1 master with small 3/4 bath; 2 guest bdrms; 1 full bath
Mid Level - front room and kitchen
Lower Level - office; 3/4 bath; and family room with fireplace.

We recently had a new roof and siding put on and plan on landscaping the front for "curb-appeal" in the spring. In the meanwhile, we were hoping to get some ideas on how to spruce up the house DIY style.

Initial thoughts are:
1) Replacing vinyl flooring in all bathrooms with ceramic tile.
2) Refinishing kitchen cabinetry (their all wood)
3) Putting in laminate wood flooring in kitchen.
4) Replacing appliances (they're all probably 10 years old) if there's money left.

Any advice or other suggestions.

A. Kitchen remodel is your best "bang for the buck" people really look at the kitchen when looking for a home a up to date kitchen is your best option!

How do you match hardwood floors to exsisting cabinets?
Q. What would be the best color or type of hardwood flooring or other material to match to existing walnut Kitchen cabinetry?

A. most of the time if the cabinets are dark, then the flooring is light and so on. Basically you want a little contrast between the two so the whole kitchen doesn't disappear into a one tone black hole.

What is the best cleaner and or way to clean ceramic tile floors?

Q. What is the best solution and mop to use when cleaning ceramic floors, what makes them shine the best and what cleans them the best. Everything I seem to try is to soapy and does not clean good. Thank you.

A. I've had ceramic tile floors in the whole house for over 25 years and agree, soap doesn't work. I've always used warm water with white vinegar in it. It cuts grease and puts a great shine on the floor -- also, does NOT make the tile slippery like soap can.
Hope it works for you.

how can i clean my ceramic floor so that it is stainless?
Q. I get alot of stains on my ceramic floor even though my shoes are clean! I only mop it using light detergent.. is there a way to make it stainless? it's very irritating you know

A. I've seen a vinegar/water mix work wonders on some tile before.....

How Close Together can you Set Ceramic Floor Tiles?
Q. We are reflooring our entryway and hall with ceramic floor tile. We want to create a "seamless" look with the ceramic tiles. As a result, we want to set the tiles as close together as possible.
I like to have no space between the tiles, it look nicer.

A. use sand under & I think it will work

How to get the home plan of a housing I am putting offer to ?

Q. I am planning to put an offer to a short sale home and wanted to know as how to get home plan of that particular home.

I mean the layout, which defines how big is each room and where they are located (east, west, north south)

A. If the house was built with permits and inspected, then the local government entity that issued the permits and did the inspections will have a copy of the blue prints. They may have to dig around in the archives or go to micro fiche, but they have them, and they are public records, so they have to produce them if you request them.

Federal Home Improvement Grants, how do they work, how do you apply?
Q. I see advertisements for federal grants that do not have to be paid back that are for everything from small business funding to home improvements. I was wondering if anyone has ever received a grant for home improvement and how you apply and/or qualify to receive one. Basically, how do I get one to do home improvements and renovations??

A. Most of the home improvement grants are for renovating property in low income areas, and you have to use the property for section 8 rentals, not your own home. google search it, I found the site that way. There are grants for everything you can think of. It's a .gov website. Don't subscribe to any service that wants to charge money for finding grants for you, those svcs. are just a scam. Anyone can research and apply. I spent two days scrolling through all of the grant information just to find out that I didn't qualify for anything. Some of them are pretty funny, I saw one grant for immigrants from Africa to study ancestrial drumming. The comedian David Letterman has set up a grant for " mediocre students with little ambition". The only grant I was eligible for was down payment assistance for first time homebuyers, the application process was so long I closed on the house and moved in before I heard anything.

When doing taxes can you deduct home improvement expenses every year or only the year you sell?
Q. I was told that you could deduct home improvement expenses until the year you sold your house. Is this true?

A. Home improvement costs generally increase your adjusted basis to your house and not deductible during current year. If you took a loan to pay for these improvements, the interests you paid are deductible. Also, if your home improvement is only repainting the house, it is not considered home improvement and you cannot add the costs to your adjusted basis regarding capital gain taxes. But if the repainting job is part of a bigger home improvement project, then it's ok to add the costs to the your adjusted basis.

Now make sure you keep very good records on the costs for home improvement so you don't run into problems when you sold your home and report it to the IRS.

Do any of you know if there is a funeral flower arrangement book in the market?

Q. I need to buy books that has a great deal of photos for funeral flowers arrangement. I also need to get books on room decorating tips for funeral parlor.

A. Contact an established local florist in your area. The florist would have several books on funeral flowers and could either sell you some of their books or give you a good source of where to secure one. Also, look for the nearest Floral Syndicate store, or a First Distributor - these are wholesalers for florists - they have books on sympathy flowers by John Henry. The books show the flowers in the funeral home setting, so you could get ideas on decorating your funeral home.

What are the steps to carpeting a concrete floor, like a basement floor?

Q. wall to wall carpeting for a living room or a bedroom. What materials do I need, what tools? What is the cost?

A. It depends on the type of carpet you are going to put down. If the carpeting you are looking to laydown is a berber or indoor/outdoor rated gluedown, you don't have to worry about padding or tackstrips. If you are looking for a padded berber, plush or texture then there is more materials that is needed for the job, such as the padding, tackstrips, kneekickers, ect. I would go to your nearest carpet/home improvement store to start pricing the exact type of carpet you are looking for, while you are there, look at the how to books for a step by step guide for installation, such as Flooring 1-2-3 by Home Depot. It has step by step instructions, a time frame for installation and the tools you'll need.

Is there any way to remove gum stuck to carpeting, without damaging chemicals?
Q. My carpeting is light, so I'd prefer not to use chemicals that may cause discoloration. Thanks.

A. Getting gum out of carpet is alot like getting it out of your hair. Use an ice cube! Apply the ice to the gum and it hardens up to a much more manageable form; if you can get it cold enough, and depending on the type of gum, you may be able to 'pick' it out when it's all hardened. Yeah, stay away from chemicals as they won't get gum out.

Else you may be able to cut it out very carefully when it's in its hardened form - use a short pair of scissors to cut its way out of the fibers.

How can I remove a cat vomit stain from carpeting?
Q. I have beige carpeting (standard synthetic) that was stained by cat vomit. The stain is pink in color. I've used several methods to clean the carpet such as Resolve carpet cleaner and Spot Shot. I also tried wetting the stain and putting baking soda on it to see if the soda would absorb the color. Nothing has worked. Can any of you recommend something else I should try?

A. Kitty barf stains can be hard to remove. Three things you can try:

Orange oil (citrisolve or goo gone.) this may dissolve what the carpet cleaner did not.

Simple Green TM

Windex TM glass cleaner. I have found this very effective at removing all sorts of stains from nylon carpet.

Be sure to first remove any chunks and the majority of the spew before cleaning. You don't want to spread it around. a Wet/Dry vacuum works well for this.

How to find the best home loan calculator app on Samsung Galaxy S3?

Q. How to find the best home loan calculator app on Samsung Galaxy S3? i need a loan calculator app, but i can't find the one i really want! so can anyone show me the best loan calculator app for Galaxy S3?

A. Well, i heard a good home loan calculator app called Quicken, you can try that.

How much debt is too much when you want to apply for a home loan?
Q. I would like to apply for a home loan, but I have some credit card debt. I have good credit - never missed a payment, never been late, etc. I just don't know if having credit card debt will cause me to be declined.

A. The bank will add in your credit card dept along with any other loans or debts and will assess it against your income and the amount of your home loan will be estimated taking into account your ability to pay.

A bank will usually take the total amount of your credit card limit as your debt, not how much you've used of it. So, if you have a card limit of $30,000 but have only used up $1000 of it the bank will see it that your debt is $30,000, not the $1000. That's the downside. Banks won't usually decline you for a home loan just because you have a c/card. They work on your ability to pay your loan.

If possible, try and pay off your card and destroy it! Have a debit card instead, then you only have access to money that you have, not money that you don't have!

How does applying for a Home Loan Affect your credit score?
Q. I want to apply for Home Loan and see how much we qualify for. My question is that if we do not like the number and want to wait how will it affect our credit score if we decide to wait and save for a bigger down payment. I want to avail the $8000.00 tax credit. Does anybody know if it is an ongoing thing or it is only for the year 2009.

A. no not unless you apply for a home loan at several places. if too many lenders are pulling credit in a short period of time it can have an impact upon score.

But one or 2 every quarter is no big deal.

$8,000 tax credit right now is only good for purchased up thru 11/30/2009. There is no law yet that extends it past that.

What paint colour will look best with my livingroom furniture?

Q. I am trying to decide what color to paint my livingroom. I have a black leather couch & love seat, dark walnut floors and teak coffee table. What paint colors will compliments my furniture and floors?

A. I'd like to give you a different idea. On one of the walls in your living room, place a mirror with a kind of designed grill in front like in this picture - http://www.luxuryfurnitureandlighting.com/furniture_images/living/deco/Y02%20sofa-1.jpg

Or paint the walls a light grey colour. see this - http://www.3dm3.com/forum/attachments/f48/14067d1200848748-living-room-interieur.jpg

Since you have dark colour in you living room, try to balance it by painting the walls a very faint yellow or off-white. Or one main red wall and the rest beige colour could also work. You decide. :)

Remodeling a kitchen - how long did it take, how much did it cost?

Q. My husband and I want to remodel our kitchen and would like to plan for the time and costs. How long did your kitchen remodel take and were there unexpected expenses you hadn't counted for that came up? Were you happy with the outcome of the kitchen based on what you spent?

A. It took 3 months..... we did it ourselves and it cost 27,000$ Canadian....

Unexpected expenses: wiring that was no longer any good, having to buy more tiles, redoing the floor base to make it smooth for the new tiles (because pulling up the old ones ruined the floor underneath) and having to make a new countertop instead of just being able to relaminate the old one (the wood underneath the old laminate was rotting).

Yes... very happy with the outcome! We have just sold the house... paid it 133 500.00$ just over 5 years ago.... just sold it for 279 500.00$... I'd say that definitely covers the cost of the kitchen renovation!

Would white appliances go with dark kitchen cabinets (cherry color) and mahogany flooring?
Q. Kitchen remodel

A. Stainless steel is the best...i sell alot of those at work and when you try to sell your home it would sell faster because of the finish of your appliances.

We may be on a home remodelling show. Will we have to pay gift tax?
Q. Our family may be appearing on a kitchen remodelling show in the near future. Are we going to have to pay a gift tax on the portion of the remodelling we do not contribute financially to? For example, we contribute $5,000 towards a kitchen, and the TV network creates a kitchen worth $20,000. Will we owe taxes on the difference?
If it is claimed as income, is it claimed at the same percentage as my fulltime job?

A. First of all, ignore the "rent" answer entirely....way off the mark.

Second, the recipient of a gift NEVER pays tax on the gift for federal income tax purposes. Allow me to repeat...NEVER! If Bill Gates gave you a billion dollars, you would owe the IRS zero dollars and zero cents income tax. Your state may be different.

So, you are probably thinking why people who were given cars on the Oprah Winfrey show had to pay tax. It is because they officially "won" the car. They were not given cars, they won cars. I am not very well versed on when exactly something is given or won, but I bet it has something to do with General Motors or someone who wanted to write-off the cost of the cars instead of eating them. You see, sometimes the giver of a gift pays a tax even if the recipient does not. If Bill Gates gave you $1 billion, he would end up paying an additional amount (nearly $500 million) in gift taxes to the IRS. This is different than income tax and has something to do with estate tax. Only the payer pays a gift tax (when the gift is excessive)*. The recipient of a gift never pays any federal tax. So, maybe to avoid a gift tax, or maybe to be able to write off the cars, they called them all prizes and not gifts.

Therefore, ask the show if the kitchen improvements are a gift or a prize. Believe me, the show knows more about this than I or anyone else on this board does. They've answered your question a million times before for other people.

Finally, if it turns out that you have to claim the "winnings", it is added to your income just as if you made that much in interest. Exactly what rate you will pay on that amount depends on how much other taxable income you have. If you are in the 25% marginal tax bracket already, then you will pay 25% of the winnings in federal income taxes. Of course, if the winnings cause your new, total, taxable income to go over into the next tax bracket, then the amount of winnings to get you to the threshold will be taxed at your marginal tax rate (25%) and the remainder will be taxed at your new tax rate (33%).

OK?

* Anytime someone gives more than $12,000 ($11,000 for 2005 and earlier) to a single person, they have to file a gift tax return. It is only after that person gives more than $1 million total to all recipients do they start to owe taxes. Therefore, if you gave me $12,000, you would not have to fill out any extra forms. If you gave me $13,000, even though you would have to file a gift tax return showing a gift of $1,000 ($13,000 - $12,000), you would owe nothing. Once your gift tax return lifetime total exceeded $1 million will you start to pay tax on your gifts. Of course, gifts to charitable organization are exempt from gift tax.

In high school do you go to the same classes with your home room or what?

Q. I remember in sixth grade we used to stick with our home room the entire day besides our elective class.

Is it like that in high school? Or do multiple kids from different classes go to a class at the same time as you? Then what about your home room class?

A. Well my high school year this year (9th grade) they made all 4 classes mix with each other for these lessons French , Gym , English , Math , Science. They have different sets like 1st , 2nd , 3rd and 4th. 1st is the top class (clever people) 2nd (slightly less clever) 3rd (Not so clever) and 4th(need some work,is the only way to say it). But they change the sets the people go in depending on how good they are at that lesson.

My home room class stays together for all the other classes, and no other people from the other 9th grade classes join our class.

A. You have left yourself behind. All the students there have been kicked out of regular school and most have anger issues.

The problem is with the students and not the teacher.

Model home furnishings and decor?
Q. Is there a place where you can buy complete model home rooms (furnishings and decor)? I live in Southern California (Inland Empire). I've heard that there are model home furniture stores. I wonder if that's the furniture right from the model homes or just identical to it.

A. The best place to buy model home furnishings is at the STORE. Really. Go to the nicest "design furniture" stores (very high end ones) and you'll see that they sell off the model showroom pieces at great discounts. Each store has it's own policy , rates etc, but you can get some very nice stuff a great discounts simply because it was "modelled".

Not Registerting and asking for gift certficiates at a house warmong party?

Q. I am having a house warming party at the end of January and all of my friends are telling me to register for gifts. I pretty much have a handful of kitchen appliances and really only need big stuff like bedroom furniture and accent furniture. I really dont want to enforce gift giving at my party but I feel like I should. I honestly would just rather recieve gift certficates rather than picture frames and 5 of the same kitchen appliances. I know that is tacky to talk about gifts in an invitation but how can I go about it the right way? HELP!!

A. Etiquette dictates that YOU do not ask for gifts in an invitation. Tell your friends if someone asks them what to get you that a G.C. at certain stores would be great. Otherwise, you get what you get, or don't get for that matter.

Who has decorating tips for choosing sofa & love seat colors?
Q. I already own a nice black dining set, black accent furniture, and a black entertainment center. The living room and dining room are both one large room, so the black furniture seems connected. I really love black leather sofas, but it seems like it may be too much black. I'm also considering deep brown, tan, or beige leather. Suggestions?

A. have them be the same or variations of the same color. And choose that color in relation to the walls, carpet or another color that is prevalent in that room.

Ok will this theme work and and where can i get it?
Q. Ok I want to re-do my room. I want to the walls to be red, the comforter to be black, the sheet set to be white with red and black plaid on it and black accent furniture. Does that go together nicely? Where can I get that stuff CHEAP? Are there any sites that have a virtual room-put-togetherer? Any answers are appreciated.

How do they make the commercial with light pictures?

Q. It's a commercial for a printer or camera or something, and it has people making shapes with glow sticks or sparklers in the dark. How do they make it?

A. It's called light painting. Those commercials are lots of individual shots put together.

Light painting is done with a long exposure in minimal light. Or no light. While the photo is being exposed, the person "writes" in the air with a glowstick or a pen-light. The exposure usually goes on long before or after the person has done the writing, so they often don't appear at all as the scene exposes without them in it.

If doing it in no light at all, fire a flash after you're done to expose the rest of the scene.

Does anyone remember a beer commercial with the ugly dog contest from years ago?
Q. It was a super bowl commercial, maybe Bud Light from many years ago with an ugly dog contest. The dog might have been called Spot. I can't remember, but I thought it was the best commercial ever! I can't find it on the internet. Can someone help?

A. Spuds McKenzie was the white bull terrier selling Bud Light in the late 1980's. Check the links. The last link is a video of her (she was female!) commercial.

Can laminate wood flooring in two adjoining rooms be mismatched?

Q. We are moving into our first home and we are replacing the carpet in the living room with laminate wood flooring. The floor in the dining room is already laminate wood and joins up with the living room floor. We are trying to pick out new floors and are wondering if we can get a different color wood floor for the living room or if we need to match it perfectly with the dining room. Would mismatching the wood look tacky?? Calling all interior designers! I need your help!

A. What you are asking is a question of personal taste. I (being a wood lover) think it's kinda cool to bounce to contrasting wood off one another, But thats just me.

What wood flooring should I use for my table tennis room?
Q. What wood flooring should I use for my table tennis room? Some recommended floating interlocking laminate flooring with good underlays is good but I don't know what the hell are they talking about. I was wondering if some could suggest and explain some wood that can be used to play Table Tennis. To help Table Tennis requires good shock absorption and cushion from underlays. Those expert wood people out there please help.

A. Vinyl floor tiles are probably the best choice for your play room. These tiles are easy to install and are extremely durable

How to prep subfloor for wood flooring?
Q. I've installed prefinished wood flooring before but the kitchen has ceramic tile glued to 1/4" plywood, which is then (I assume) glued and nailed to the original sub floor. I need to remove the tile and 1/4" plywood so I can put our new wood flooring on the original subfloor. What is the best way to do this? I was planning on using a hammer and chisel but is there a specialized tool i can use?

A. Yes there is.. A hammer and wide chisel... In your case , and I ve removed 100s of floors over the years and that what you need to do. Hammer and chisel off the tile, using caution. Chips FLY!! Then you can use a crow bar to get under the wood and go at it.If your lucky it was screwed down and you can unscrew a lot of them. But most will pull through the 1/4" luan and then deal with that later.
Your lucky it was installed wrong this is an easier rip out, Suggestion. Safety glasses, long sleeve shirt sand ear protection to prevent chips in the ears ( I m not kidding) Cover doorways to help prevent dust and put a fan in a window to suck dust out.
Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications GL

How long do fleas live in an environment without a host?

Q. No pets now in home. Only two adults highly allergic to flea bites. The home is without fleas except for one room where we put diatomaceous earth and sprayed, but due to storage of furniture and boxes, we could not get the poison into all of the areas of the room. We will probably have to brave the fleas and go back in to spray, but how long will they live if we just leave the door closed?

A. meptastic is right, is not the live ones, it is the eggs that hatch and the cycle does not need hosts to feed on to keep producing

those fleas are prolly living in your boxes and fabric furniture
The average life span of an adult flea is probably about 6 weeks - but fleas can live as long as a year under certain conditions. A female flea can lay 20 to 28 eggs a day. She may lay several hundred eggs over her life span. These eggs fall off the pet and develop where they land. They are small and can even develop in the cracks in wood floors or other small crevices. A larvae hatches from the flea egg. It takes as few as 9 days to as long as 200 days to go through its growth stages. At this time is forms a pupae and waits for the right time to hatch. Fleas prefer temperatures of 65 to 80 degrees and humidity of 75 to 85 per cent. This range determines the period of time that fleas are a problem in your particular area. For some areas of the country, this is all year. In others, the flea season is relatively short. It is estimated that for every adult flea found on the pet, there are about 10 developing fleas in the pet's environment.

In other words, you need Orkin to come in a take care of this, and then come back every two weeks for a couple months to go ove the room again. If you vacum, you can get eggs in the works of your cleaner, emptying the bag wont help rid the fleas and then if you vacum into another room it just spreads them back into a new area.

Where can I find cheap storage furniture besides IKEA?
Q. I need this storage for clothes, so links and suggestions for dressers, wardrobes, etc. are all welcome. Thanks :)

A. In St. Louis we have a place called weekends only and Value City. This is a good place. Target has good items. Try Walmart, Linens and Things, and K-Mart. Under bed boxes are good. Look in the sale adds this week. Furniture stores have a discount section in the back.

When making storage furniture does it have much use of computer aided design/manufacture?
Q. I am making a small wooden storage box in my d.t class at school and i need to find out whether or not it uses cad/cam. Thank you :)

A. I don't know what D.T. class is. If you have easy access to CAD/CAM (computer aided drafting/computer aided manufacturing) and you know how to use it, then draw your design with details on size 'c' format. This way you can show the details, and B/M on one sheet. Include on this drawing a final 3D assy. in the upper right hand corner. It is always nice to use and store a professional drawing.
And, if you want to make changes to the project, very easy for additions or revisions. For record keeping you'll have a disk instead of a paper copy and future projects can all be stored one this one disk. A nice way to go.

what will it cost to have the floor refinished at $5.98 per square foot?

Q. wood floors are being refinished in an office. if the room is a 15 ft 6 in square, what will it cost to have the floor refinished at $5.98 per square foot?

A. You are saying 15 ft 6 in square so that is 15 1/2 X 15 1/2 = 240.25 sq so at 5.98 a sq it would be about $1436.00

Good Luck :)

What's the best way to clean hardwood floors?
Q. We recently had our hardwood floors refinished and want to preserve them. Is there one particualr cleaner/polisher that is recommended? I checked at our local hardware store and there seems to be a pletheora of products but not sure which one to use for general cleaning that won't cause build up or cause the finish to erode. Thank you

A. I just found a product that works well. It is Bona Swedish Formula hardwood floor cleaner. You spray a small area of floor with the cleaner, then wipe it with a swiffer-like floor cloth. I bought a kit that included the swiffer-like item (the cloth can be removed for laundering) and the cleaner. Its is recommended for finished floors, with a unwaxed finish.

How dusty is refinishing hardwood floors?
Q. I am planning on having my hardwood floors refinished and I keep hearing horror stories from coworkers who've had their floors redone. They went through the process 10+ years ago and I am not sure if things have changed. I will be living in the house while it's being done (with the exception of a couple of days) and am wondering what to expect. Will I be dusting for months just to get it under control? Will I have to clean off the walls because dust has settled on the wall texture (yes, I've gotten that story!)? Any information or recent personal experiences you can offer would be much appreciated. Thank you!

A. Face it girl Your house will get dust all over. No matter if the contractor uses vac bags or not. No matter if he/she closes off the bottoms of the doorways with towels or rags. You will be cleaning dust for days!!!!! It can't be avoided. Just as a messy kitchen can't be avoided if you are gonna cook Thanksgiving dinner. I have been through this a few times. First off there was no bags no vac no prep for the mess, next time I insisted in the Vac bags rags, at doorways, and extra men cleaning as the lead man was sanding. It doesn't matter, the dust will get out and about. It will minimize the damage but if you got to dust everything it doesn't matter if the dust is just a tiny bit you still got to clean it right? And off of everything.
Just be prepared, Wrap valuables with plastic, cover furniture with sheets, and have plenty of bags for your Hoover!!!!And believe me You will have to clean dust off of everything more than once. I used a gas powered blower to get the fisrt inch of dust out, opened all the windows and doors and cranked up the ole homelite.

how can i clean my ceramic floor so that it is stainless?

When laying ceramic tile floor in a bathroom, do you need to grout/caulk where the floor and walls meet?
Q. I am having a bathroom remodeled and the contractor that did the ceramic floor, put down wood baseboards and then durock before installing the ceramic tile. He then grouted everything, but he didn't grout or do anything around the edge of the bathroom where the floor meets the wall. When I asked about this to another of the contractors, he said that that area would be covered with the shoe molding and didn't need to be grouted. Is this true. Is this common practice or should the very edges of the rooom be grouted too or caulked or something. Is this just a matter of preference among contractors or did they miss a step?

A. You need to allow the floor to expand and contract at a different rate than the walls. Do not fill the voids. Put a shoe moulding over the ends of the tiles near the walls.

Looking for a square glass shade for a ceiling light. Where can I find one?

Q. I have an ceiling lighting fixture that has a square glass shade that I broke last night. It is just a square piece of glass with a hole in the middle that is attached to the fixture via a screw that goes through the whole and then a cap that is put on the screw to hold the glass in place. Does anyone know if they sell these shades at a Loews, Home Depot or Target type store? I found one on amazon, but they're charging over $8 in shipping for a $3 item. Please help! Thanks!

How do I convert a fan light kit to a ceiling light?
Q. I want to use a fan light kit as a ceiling light. What do I need to do to make sure this works out?

A. I may be reading this wrong. I am certainly reading it differently than others. You want to use light kit made for a ceiling fan as a ceiling light, without a ceiling fan.

The problem here lies in the way the two are made to mount. A ceiling light has a bracket and matching holes and/or bolts to work with an electrical box. A ceiling fan light kit is made to attach to the bottom of the ceiling fan and generally has a hub base with holes on the side to attach it to the fan assembly.

I have never seen an adapter to make them work, although I am sure there is one. You will not find anything like that at Lowes or Home Depot, although they may be able to order one. Check out your local electric supply shops, the ones the electrical contractors use, Price may make it less practical.

Can you paint a ceiling light fixture? I want the actual glass globe painted - is this possible?
Q. I'm looking to paint the ceiling light fixture in my baby's bedroom. I am doing a Dr. Seuss theme and I haven't been able to find a ceiling light fixture and that's what I want. So, I want to know if it's possible to do and if so what type of paint is safe to use (non toxic, non flammable and so on) to paint Dr. Seuss characters on it. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

A. Seems like a bad idea. It will block the light and, if you ever want to change the theme, you will have to buy a new light. Just paint the ceiling around the light.

What is the best kitchen flooring for a home with a very slobbery dog?

Q. My dog slobbers a lot on the kitchen floor when we are out. We come home to lots of very watery slobber on the floor. Our current linoleum flooring is old and needs replacement. I would like something in style but it needs to withstand the slobber. Thanks for any suggestions.

A. The subject of kitchen flooring and dogs can be a real dilemma for those who have large rambunctious pups and a small budget. Some of the more durable floor types can be somewhat expensive. When it comes to flooring, you get what you pay for. While some kitchen floor types can entail high upfront costs, in the long run, they may just help you save money.
Some Kitchen Floor Types for Dogs:

Linoleum flooring
Ceramic tile flooring
High-pressure laminate
Rubber flooring

Hardwood is affected by changes in humidity and is not recommended for bathrooms, kitchens, or below grade. Many laminate floors are water-resistant, but you should check the warranty to be sure what is and is not covered.

What kind of flooring would you lay in a bottom level of a tri-level house?
Q. I live in a tri-level home. The upstairs has hardwood floors in all but the bathroom and it has ceramic tile. The main floor will soon be remodeled so its not an issue at this point.
The bottom level has a bathroom, pantry and bedroom. We have gutted the bathroom and are trying to decide what type of floor to put down. Its a concrete floor as of now. What kind of floor would be best and should i do the ENTIRE lower level the same flooring? Im thinking resale value.

A. Any moisture at all in that lower level, I d do that whole area in ceramic..And if the house is a few years old, and you have no vapor barriers , again I d do ceramic. Using area rugs as needed. Any moisture issues at all or no vapor barrier I wouldn t do any carpet or vinyl since it can ruin carpet and the hydro static pressure can blow off any vinyl glued down. If this level comes off a garage again I d do ceramic..
If you have a vapor barrier and have no moisture troubles a glue direct engineered hard wood looks great and ceramic in the bath unless its a 1/2 bath then you can let it flow right in there but thats your choice. Any other flooring questions you can e mail me thru my avatar GL

What kind of flooring should I use?
Q. I need to replace the carpet in my master bedroom. The flooring that leads up to the bedroom is a blond laminate. I do not want that in the bedroom. I also don't want carpet again. Would it be strange to do a different color wood floor? All that is under the carpet is plywood. I want to do this myself. Any suggestions?

A. For resale value of the house, you should stick with the same or a similar color. If there is wood in the room, you could match it to that. If you aren't that crazy about the blond color, use some throw rugs. Never buy flooring to match furniture. Furniture is temporary & floors are not usually.

Any good home decorating contests worth entering?

Q. Anyone know of any good home decorating contests I can enter? I'd like to redecorate my bedroom in my home. Maybe one in which they come in and redecorate for you, but any will do.

A. An obvious one is hgtv. I think they are currently launching a dream home give away contest. Although, I think that's a little different than what you mean. However, here's the link:

http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/dream_home_2008/text/0,,HGTV_30596_65579,00.html

You could also try a site called Furniture for Small Spaces. They're doing a small contest for people who have small bedrooms. The rewards are much smaller but the chance of winning is much greater and it might be fun to enter:

http://contest.furniture-for-small-spaces.com

If those aren't enough, you could also try contest directories. They usually have a section for the home which might list other contests.

I hope that helped!

How can I get on a home decorating TV show?
Q. I live in N.H. and recently bought a condo. I would love to get on a home decorating show. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get on one, and does anyone have any suggestions for which one? Thanks!

A. i would suggest trading spaces (if you have any friends that could use the same decorating help) or perhaps design on a dime? go to hgtv.com or tlc.com and find some shows..sign up for one, and post pictures of your rooms and things...that should get some things going...

How do you get started in home decorating?
Q. I want to help someone in home decorating or weding planning, any suggestions?

A. Examples of your work help. Do something with your place(you got to start someplace) for no one wants to be the guinea pig... to make it"cool" and then invite friends over for "tea" so they can see your handiwork. Maybe they know somebody who knows somebody. Word of mouth works the best.

How do I replace wood flooring with tile in entrance way?

Q. In my entryway, we have wood flooring that has been warped do to water. My entryway also goes into my dining room using the same wood floowing flow. So, essentially I just want to take a small area (3x6) at the entryway to replace the wood flooring with tile. How would I go about this? Is it possible to cut the pre-existing wood flooring to make an area to lay the tile?

A. It is possible, as a matter of fact I've done it several times. Do you have an idea of the thickness of your wood floor - is it 3/4" or the 1/4" or 3/8" stuff. Knowing the thickness will help to determine what thickness of underlayment - tile backer board and/or your tile can be so your tile will not be thicker than your wood.

To cut the area out, I'd suggest you use masking tape and mark off where your lines to cut will be. The tape will make it easier to see the lines when you are cutting and it will also help to prevent splintering on the end grain cuts.

Once you have the area masked and SQUARED up. Emphasing squaring the area up - usually off the door. If your area isn't square then your tile won't look good. I'd suggest you take a hammer and chisel and remove some of the wood floor in the center of your area to determine the exact thickness of the wood. Once that is determined, take a circular saw with a plywood blade and set it for just a little shallower than that depth (to prevent cutting into the subfloor and weakening it). If the wood floor is oak, I'd suggest you take a utility knife and scribe along the lines you have and then using the saw cut just inside those scribed lines.

You must be careful not to cut beyond your lines - the area that can not be cut with the circular saw can then be cut with a sawzall or a sabre saw. The sawzall with a fine toothed blade is the best way to go. Again be very careful not to cut beyond your lines or cut through the subfloor.

Once the lines are cut, remove the wood and chisel and chips on the edges that the saws missed. Now, I'd suggest that you apply some polyeurathane to the newly cut edges to prevent any moisture from setting and grouting your tile from getting into the wood floor and staining or causing it to warp again.

Now that your area is cut out and the edges are sealed, You are ready to put down backer board and tile. I'd use hardi-backer, durrock, or a similar product - may only need 1/4" thick or could need 1/2" depending on the tile and thickness of your floor. Don't forget to allow for the thickness of thinset ( 1/4" usually) when deciding on tile and backer board thickness.

Set your tiles in the pattern you want and your entrance will look new again.

I hope that this helped answer your question.

What is the best machine to clean my wood floors?
Q. Almost all of my house is covered in wood flooring and there are about 8 people in the house. So you can imagine how hard it is to clean massive wood floors that get ALOT of traffic. I need some kind of machine to effectively clean my wood floors. I've been researching steamers and steamer vacuums, but I want to know which machine will work best. Also, my wood floors are surface sealed.

A. Use a damp mop with vinegar and water mixed 10 to 1. Why waste money on a machine that may ruin your floors? If there is any break in the finish on your floor, a steamer is forcing moisture into the wood. This will cause stains and possibly rot. You want as little moisture on your wood floors as possible.

Is the Playstation Home aspects of Grand Theft Auto 4 enough to buy the PS3 version over the 360 version?
Q. I'm talking about the Trophies, accessories for your Home avatar, GTA 4 themed Home rooms, etc. (That will come out whenever Playstation Home comes out). Do these features outweigh the 360's achievements and eventual exclusive maps? Also, I do have a Dualshock 3 Rumble controller for the PS3, so rumble is not a contributing factor.

A. PS3 is stronger than 360. Also I heard that PS3 is getting some content too. Home GTA features would be nice too. Yes, I would say PS3 is better.

What brand should I stick to when buying home appliances?

Q. So, I want to buy new home appliances for my new house but not sure which brands are most reliable. Currently I am thinking of buying a refrigerator, washing machine, microwave, and put range hoods on my kitchen. Some brands that I consider are Samsung, Fischer and Paykel, Electrolux, and BOSCH. Which of the best brands for common home appliances? Thanks

A. Well for a washer dryer set I recommend Maytag. In 44 years I have had 3 sets of Maytag and NO REPAIRS.

Dishwasher, I recommend KITCHEN AID In 35 years the Frigidaire lasted 6 years and two ;Kitchen aids have lasted at least 15 years each. I cannot remember when I got the current on. But I keep it really clean in the bottom so it still does a great job.

lI like Kenmore for a stove and the Microwave/ hood. By combining those two you do not take up counter space.

I think I have a Frigidaire refrigerator, but previously had a GE model that was still running after 28 years.

When I upgraded all of these appliances we dropped out electric bill $100.00 a month. We also changed to all fluorescent throughout the house. Our hot water heater is 35 years old and still works great. I know we could save more on the electric bill but it works so well, I hate to spend the money when it isn't necessary just now.

We also have a 5 ton heat pump by TRANE, at 9 years 11 month and one week out compressor went out
It was replaced for free the warrantee was for 10 years. ASTOUNDING DON'T YOU THINK.

A. There is no law but it would be really hard to rent a house without appliances.

I am planning to buy new home appliances, is there a website where they have reviews and ratings?

Q. i am interested in becoming an architect. i know what kind of architecture i want to be. but i dont know what its call. i just want to draw a single homes w/ rooms, bathroom, living room and ext from foundation up. what is it call? interior design or professional home design?

A. That is called an architect.
An interior designer is a licensed professional (as is architect) who is the type of person who helps out on the show trading spaces. They "design interiors." They will usually be knowledgeable in fabric, color, material, and geometric organization.
A professional home designer is usually a person who is not licensed or registered and draws up house plans. They call themself home designer because they are not licensed and not allowed to use architect.
An architect is a registered professional licensed to practice architecture and design buildings (including homes)

Can I use interior paint outside?

Q. Stupid question but can I use interior paint outside? I bought a gallon of interior paint to paint a closet door, now I have a lot left and was wondoring if I could paint my wooden bullked(outside door to cellar) door with it. I hate to waste paint.

A. you could but i do not reccomend it. as a painting contractor , i can tell you it would flake off very quickly, and wouldnt be worth the the effort. the only thing you could do if you were adamant about doing ti would be to oil prime the door with a good primer like X-I-M then top coat it with your interior paint...this may buy some time before it flakes...but it will flake

What brand of interior house paint do you like?
Q. I have a lot of interior painting to do. I want something that goes on smooth and usually covers in one coat.

A. Im a 37 year experienced painter..Sherwin willimas has many good labels of paint..Pro mar 200...and cashmere are both greta wall paints..alot of people say behr..but it is one of the worst paints you can get..user unfriendly, hard on your tools , rollers brushes, etc...and THEY DO NOT HONOR THIER WARRANTY...I painted since 13 years old.. and believe me..Behr sucks!!

What are you the best interior paints, and do you think that brands like Farrow & Ball are worth the price?
Q. As an artist, I've learned that sometimes expensive paints are worth the money because of the exceptional quality, and others are a rip off. I'm guessing the same is true with interior paints for your house. My mom is obsessed with Farrow & Ball, but to me it's absurd to pay more than $90 a gallon for paint. They have very limited color options, too.

A. Farrow and ball only do paints that are period colours (georgian, victorian etc..), and you can choose from lots of different finishes. But personally, i don't think that it makes a blind bit of difference! I would much rather spend my money on some fabulous feature wallpaper, or a nice sofa than on paint, which nobody is going to pay the slightest bit of attention to. Nobody compliments your paint, no matter how expensive it is! I think that if you are trying to create a victorian house, with every detail spot on and correct, then maybe, just maybe, its worth it. Otherwise i wouldn't bother!

Is there a way to remove the cigarette smoke smell from wooden furniture?

A. I would try Orange Glow on it. I have a wooden bench that had sat in storage and smelled like mold and nastyness, and we used Orange Glow on it and it smells great now. Hope this helps!

Can someone recommend a good three part art print series for a dining room?
Q. I'm looking to get some artwork for my dining room. The furniture is dark wood, almost black. I would love something with scenery cut into three parts. Thanks!

A. Go to a craft store and look for a picture you like have them cut it into 3 pieces and frame it for you or do it yourself. Roxanne

how to get rid of cigarette smell in furniture?
Q. I bought some dining room furniture and the previous owners were smokers. It is glass and wood. I have cleaned all surfaces but everything still smell the smoke. What can I use?. Air freshners, Fabreeze and plug ins just mask the smell. It is still there.

A. You can get rid of the smoke smell with White Vinegar.

Vinegar destroys cigarette smell on a molecular level. It doesn't just cover it up, like air fresheners do. It destroys it.

Pour undiluted White Vinegar into a spritzer bottle and spray the furniture with this.

The vinegar works best at 100% strength.

Yes, vinegar stinks, too, but unlike cigarette smell, it dissipates within hours. And once it does, the cigarette smell will be gone, too. It works every time.

Will a 6 volt bulb work in a 12 volt socket if the power source is 6 volt?
Q. My old collector car has a 6 volt system, but most new lighting accessories (like a license plate lamp) are listed as 12 volt. Can I use a 6 volt bulb in the new 12 volt socket as long as the power source is 6 volt? 6 volt bulbs are still available in various configurations. Are any modifications to the accessory necessary to insure the 6 volt bulb works?

A. No problem as long as the VOLTAGE is only 6 volts. Good luck.

How to get digital video camera to not record so grainy? The camera can record in 1080i?
Q. I have a Sony HVR-A1U I bought for shooting interview style clips. I have attempted to play with the settings and am utterly clueless on how to get the picture quality to be comparable to my Sony DCR-200. I was wondering if I had to buy an additional lighting accessory because it is extremely hard to get any clip without grain and the only way I find to take the grainy view off is to lower the exposure.

A. You need extra lighting, or only film outside, its rated at (Min Illumination 7 lux) so anything less than a reasonably well lit room will not be good enough. look at the specs of the cameras in your handbook

What color would be good for an accent wall when my livingroom is a strong Yellow?
Q. I have a townhouse size livingroom. It is in a large rectangle shape. The entire room is painted with a strong yellow.. a little darker than Big Bird. We have hard wood floors that are a medium-light wood color and dark brown leather furniture, tables and mica lamps. Which wall should have the accent color? The entertainment system is along one of the shorter walls and the other shorter wall has a big bay window. The two larger walls are pretty much exposed and contain large cut-out doorways.

A. brown

What should we do with a wall between kitchen and livingroom?
Q. We have a wall between our kitchen and livingroom (with a door on the side of course. We are considering cutting a large space out of it and fitting it with a bar to have a breakfast bar situation, plus it will be nice to be able to see into either room from the other. But I was standing looking and wondering if we should just go all the way and knock out the whole wall, which would make for one big kitchen/living area. Our two rooms are neither one very large. Can anyone speak from experience on doing such a change? I fear too if we do the breakfast bar thing we'll be limiting our wall space as far places to put furniture...of course if there is no wall there, then we're really messing ourselves up.

A. I have done this before in my house so you are in luck!
What you should do is made a breakfast bar area in between the rooms by cutting a large hole in the wall put a counter in so there is a table and then add decor. One the empty space left of the wall you didn't cut hang shelves make some small and others larger and place wine glasses and cook books [etc.] on the side that is in the kitchen. On the side that is the living area space add shelves but on this side put small plants, books, candles, and other items that will fit with the decor of your home.

I really hope this helps and i am glad to help will anything that has to do will home design. Enjoy your new breakfast bar!!

Bad smell from new furniture in nursery-how do i get it out?

Q. About 2 months ago my husband and i bought a crib and dresser combo for our baby who is due in about 2 weeks. Got it home and out of the boxes and it smells bad. I cant explain the smell. It doesnt smell like hard wood, its more like a chemical-ish odor from the finish or laquer it has on it. It's making all of his cloths in his dresser small the same way. It's really annoying to me. I feel like ill be putting him in a room full of fumes. Anyone have any idea HOW i can get rid of the smell naturally? I have heard of taking it out in the sun everyday over long period of time to let it breath out and get the fumes out but is that the only way. I dont have alot of time really.
By the way, this isnt a smell that would be easily covered up. Its not one of those- dog pissed on the carpet type of thing- and its hard wood so if i spray something like air freshener it doesnt work.. but thanks

A. I would open the windows in the nursery to air it out. Point an oscillating fan on them as well w/the drawers open (remove the clothes so they don't absorb the scent-give them a wash if they don't air out on their own in a few days). If you have a ceiling fan, turn that on too. The air circulation will help get the smell out quicker than anything else. If you are running your air condition, close the door to keep it out of the rest of your home. This isn't exactly energy efficient, but it's the easiest. The 12 week waiting period for a new crib won't be helpful to because the new one will have similar issues, unless you get a wrought iron crib-but those have their own issues (significant cost, danger of getting hurt on bars, etc).

Volatile compounds (VOCs) used in staining products tend to take longer to dry/cure especially when they are in oil based products. (Also why people shouldn't use oil based paints to paint interior spaces if they are sensitive to smells.)

I assume that you have allowed the mattress to air out also. Most mattresses have a smell to them as well. This also goes for newly installed carpets.

If you plan on using a bassinet/pack-n-play w/included bassinet then, I suggest using that (not in the childs room) in the interim. Your momma super smeller is working, which is a good thing in this case. When you can no longer smell the "new" smell, it will be safe to put baby in the crib.

Congratulations! I hope you have an easy delivery with your son. Btw, I found out w/mine that when they say "bouncing baby boy", they mean when he gets old enough to start bouncing on furniture or whenever they get excited about something :-)

How do you keep your home smelling good?
Q. I am always going into homes where everything smells so fresh and even sweet, what do you use to keep your home and linen smelling so good and long lasting?

A. Dryer sheets, lysol, and carpet powder are your best friends. Potpourri and candles do good to mask the smell, but that's not what you want. It's artificial. It's nice for a scent, but it's not a clean smell, really.

After cleaning, sprinkle some scented carpet powder on the floor and let it set for a couple of minutes, then vacuum it up. The scent remaining is very faint and fresh. Put a dryer sheet between your linen to keep them fresh smelling. You can also stick a bar of soap or dryer sheet in your closets to keep them fresh smelling. You can even rub a dryer sheet over your furniture (test it first) to give a nice scent AND reduce any static cling. Dryer sheets also clean and de-static-ify (LOL) tv and computer screens. AAAANNNDDD you can put a dryer sheet wedged or taped into an air conditioning vent in every room to spread the fresh scent around. No one will even know it's there.

Can you use a thick heavy curtain for a home theater room?
Q. - If I wanted to divide my home theater room from another room without drywall, could I use a thick heavy curtain?

A. You could, but it won't do much in terms of cutting down the noise from the Home Theater system. Curtains, even heavy ones, are limited bandwidth absorbers. In other words, they absorb sounds over a very limited range of frequencies. A dividing wall, particularly a wall that is properly constructed to stop noise, is far more effective.

There is one other effect that may happen. By treating one side of the room, you will throw the tonal balance way off (typically, only the front wall of a theater should be fully covered with acoustic absorption). Things may seem to be shifted to one side if the wall is a side wall. Also, you may dull the sound by putting too much absorption on a side or back wall. Your surrounds may also not work correctly if they are dipoles which depend on sound bouncing off the walls to create an immersive rear channel surround effect.
