What is the theme in western-style bathrooms?
Q. I'm doing bachelors of architecture and we have this project of theme-oriented bathrooms. and my theme is to design a western-style bathroom, so i can see the pictures on Google and know some basic things that there should be and i can easily design one, but the thing is that I have to give the theme first, so I need the basic theme on which a western style bathroom is designed.

A. The toilets are bigger than other countries typically. The showers always have some sort of enclosed area unlike other countries which just share the same floor as the bathroom. Besides a master bathroom, typically the size of the bathroom can be smaller, especially the half bath. I don't think other countries share the same concept of half bath.

What should I use my gift cards on?

Q. I have a good amount of gift cards from a well known home furnishing store. My plastic containers fall out at me from the cabinets, as do my pots and pans. We have a small condo. I'd also like a metal trash can (which are expensive) or a nice toilet brush set. I love vacuum cleaners, but already have a Dyson and Hoover (so I think I don't need another?). We are expecting a baby next month too. What are some good items to get?
Does anyone have an ideas on what to use them for as far as decorating or remodeling the interior goes?
Bed Bath and Beyond doesn't have all those things. Their sister store might, but its too far.

A. Baby crib, mattress, blankets, clothes, bottles, formula, bottle sterilizer, potty, diapers, stroller, car seat....they do cost a lot, don't they.

Define Home Furnishing?
Q. How can you define "Home Furnishing"? Most internet dictionaries redirect this to furnishing and I can't find any definitions for it..thanks.

A. My opinion is anything that goes inside the home. This includes carpets, furniture and wall decor.

Can I claim my grandmother who is 70 year old and lives in a nursing home as a dependent?
Q. My grandmother is 70 and lives in a nursing home, I furnish all of the support for her, I paid over $12,000 for the nursing home, bought her a wheelchair, paid for her doctor's fees. Can I claim her as a dependent and deduct those expenses?

A. Yes. Provided, as it is very likely, that she ...

1) does not earn more than $3,650 gross income. In this case, if only social security, that does not count as gross income.

2) Including all her income, such as pensions and social security, you still provide over 50% support. As you say, you furnish all support.

You can deduct medical expenses on your tax return for a dependent, but not the entire cost of the nursing home. Ask them for a breakdown of the expenses, the room and board portion will not count. The other expenses, wheelchair, doctor fees, medications, etc. do count.

Does a motion security light necessarily need to be connected to a switch?

Q. I'm wanting to install some motion security lights on the outside of my home. This job can go from easy to totally ridiculous if i have to install a light switch for it.

A. === as a home and business shop wire it myself electrical amateur your best course is to wire it direct and in doing so you must be careful to turn off the breaker and use a junction box or a connection box to follow the AWG wiring codes === American Wiring Guide Codes === the purpose of the box is to be a spark arrestor and tape the wire nuts into place with the black electric tape so if and when you ever sell the home you have done this job correctly ==== NO .... you do not need to have a switch but it should run off a separate breaker if possible [[ for your own safety when doing the wiring ]] respect that power even if it is only 110 volts --- if you already understand most of this and I have been redundant it is meant to help you get it right ....

What shall I do If my security light comes on in my chevy impala?
Q. Im having a passlock problem in my 2002 chevy impala. The security light blinks on and the car wont start. I have to wait like 10 minutes before it resets itself. The dealor says it cost 600.00 to fix and no one else would touch it. Ive called around. Is there an easier way out of this?

A. all chevrolets have this problem, even mine. this summer i found out what my problem was. first the light blinks then, my tahoe woulg turn off while i applied the break peddle. killing all power to vehicle.
chevrolrt dealer told me same thing $600 to fix.

i thought the all\arm system was holding it off, on anti-thift, cause i could hear the alarm box making clicking sounds

the problem with mine was a loose positive battery post.
even tho the post was tight, just wasn't tight enough'
post was tight into the battery, but loose between both cables that hooked to the positive pose, not much just enough to cause problems.

what i did was put a lock washer between both cables, and installed cables in a v shape from bottom looking up.

havent had the problem again.

around here, i know at least 7 people with same problem

give it a try, before spending $600

Does a security light coming on have anything to do with a car not starting?
Q. I noticed a security light coming in on my dashboard the other day. After about two days my car wouldn't start. I changed the battery and put on a new one. The car still don't start at all. No engine sound either. (2003 Oldsmobile Alero) I think it is the starter.
It didn't make a sound. It didn't even click. The lights came on the dash. No engine sound at all.

A. Read your owner's manual if it's a factory installed alarm system. If it was installed by yourself, or a previous owner, call a tow. It seems as though your car thought it was being tampered with...it has shut down your ignition system to keep it from being stolen. You need to find out how to reset the system...some cars have a button under the dash that you press while turning the key to 'start', some can be reset with the key fob.Maybe your car used to have an alarm system, and it stopped working properly, and the previous owner got rid of the key fob, but not the rest of the system. Either way, I would bet that there is an alarm system that has shut the car down.

First time home painting project?

Q. Any tips for a first time home painting project?

I have never painted before in my life. The cost-saving is the major driver for this DIY project and I am actually very excited to do it myself. I am looking to paint the entire interior of our first home. I have about 3 weeks and a help who is equally or more inexperienced...

Where can I find some Paiting 101s?

A. I just painted the interior of my house, and there are some good places you can go for basic advice, like Lowe's website, or Home Depot's. My advice to you is to prep thoroughly- have all of your equipment ready and purchased ahead of time so you don't have to make repeat runs to the paint store. You want to make sure your walls are fairly clean, with no really dirty spots- check behind the TV, it can be very dusty! Spackle then sand all nail holes or uneven areas. If the walls already have color on them, you may want to prime before you paint. You'll get truer color and use less coats. Tape off any trim and windows using blue painter's tape, not masking tape. Take your time with the prep, and your final result will look much better.
As far as the paint goes, measure your rooms and take the information to the paint store-they'll help you figure out how much to buy. Generally, you'll use flat or eggshell finishes on the walls, and I recommend egshell, it has a sheen to it and reflects light better, giving you a richer color. For trim, you'll use a satin paint. If you're having trouble choosing colors, Sherwin Williams has a great feature on their website that allows you to choose a room type, then "paint" the room, walls, trim, ceiling and all!
I hope this helps! Have fun, and good luck!

How much do I charge for painting and repairs?
Q. I am looking in to doing some interior home painting jobs. I am not sure what to charge? Do you base it on the size of the rooms? How and what do I charge? How much should I charge for small repairs, putting in a new faucet, new fan?

A. Whether you bid the job or do T&M (time & material) you have to figure out what you are willing to work per hour. This may not be what you are worth per hour, as competition, location and economic times sometimes dictate terms.

The easiest solution I recommend to people in your situation, is to look over each aspect of the individual job (fan instillation, painting, etc) determine how much time it will take to complete each job from start to finish â¦â¦then double the time âyou thinkâ it will take. It may seem excessive, but it is a simple formula that has proven itself time and again.
There are many variables that go into bidding a jobâ¦â¦ but using this formula should assure you of being within the market range of a bid.
Whatever you determine your hourly at, plus material (and any mark up you put on material) would be your estimated price (and donât forget to figure any time spent at the store)

Having a home painted on the outside?
Q. When having your home professionally painted ( I assume with a gun ) how far can the fine mist travel? I realize there are varying factors, but am looking for a generalized answer. Typically how many feet?

Thanks
Alyssa - worthless!

A. Painters will take every precaution from overspray as they are responsible and accountable.

On a windy day I have seen overspray from soffits go over buildings and mist coat cars some 100 feet away.
A little heads up⦠and question to ask your painters. Ask them if they back roll when they spray.
This is something I require from all the painting contractors when doing homes, it extends the longevity of the job; although not as much so when shooting a nonporous job

is there an inexpensive or free home design software out there for a normal homeowner?

Q. its just that I want to play around with some home design ideas with my house for a small addition, & I need some kind of basic program to use. Thanks!

A. I know they can be hard to find. I think Lowes has one on their website, I used it for a kitchen once, but it takes some patience. I have always done my design ideas in The Sims 2, because it is much more user friendly and quick. I never really get around to playing the actual game though. The only problem with this is sometimes the location of things isn't exactly where you want it, but it's a good way to get the idea of what you want to do.

what is the difference between interior design and professional home design?
Q. i am interested in becoming an architect. i know what kind of architecture i want to be. but i dont know what its call. i just want to draw a single homes w/ rooms, bathroom, living room and ext from foundation up. what is it call? interior design or professional home design?

A. That is called an architect.
An interior designer is a licensed professional (as is architect) who is the type of person who helps out on the show trading spaces. They "design interiors." They will usually be knowledgeable in fabric, color, material, and geometric organization.
A professional home designer is usually a person who is not licensed or registered and draws up house plans. They call themself home designer because they are not licensed and not allowed to use architect.
An architect is a registered professional licensed to practice architecture and design buildings (including homes)

What is the best home design/home fix-it show?
Q. Just bought a house and I want to do some work on it in the future. I would like to start watching a good home design/home fix-it show to give me some ideas. Can someone suggest a good one to watch that is on a basic cable channel? I only have 78 channels.

A. All of the best one are all gone now. all that is out there is like game show ones

So if you find one please let me know. I don;t even watch them any more. There are way to fofo and only decorating stuff. But before there was this old house, bob vilias home again, michal halagans, that guy and girl team that sells the cutting thing infomercial, I learn more from the tv show "home improvement with time the tool man taylor" then I do from all of the shows that are on now.

Home Contractors: What are homeowners like to work with?

Q. Hey home improvement contractors -- when you talk to homeowners about a project, what parts are they prepared for -- and what parts are they usually NOT prepared for?

A. They're seldom prepared for anything.

They usually have an unreasonably low budget, don't appreciate all that needs to be done, and expect that you've got nothing else to do but their job.

It helps to be extremely patient, teach them a little about the entire process, and exercise empathy when they exhibit "sticker shock."

How do I stop my two 9 year old dogs from urinating on the patio furniture?

Q. The dogs are males, they are Cocker mix (probably cockapoo) and they urinate on patio furniture and on the potted plants all the time.

A. And have been doing this for 9 years, and it's suddenly a problem now??
You just have to train them to not pee there.. Which is going to be a little tough, as it's gone on a long time now. Try taking them out and past the patio and blocking the patio so that they can't get to it to pee..

Edit: NO don't rub their nose in it, this is a STUPID suggestion, this is old time training crap that doesn't work. You only suceed in teaching the dogs that you are mean, and pee in general is bad.. You don't want them afraid to pee, you just want them to pee in a more appropriate place.. Don't slap their nose or rub their nose in pee.. This is not positive training, this is ABUSE!

How do I stop birds from eating the stuffing out of my new patio furniture?
Q. I recently bought patio furniture with outdoor safe cushions. But the cushions are already being pecked to pieces by the birds in my backyard! They have made several holes in the new cushions and it's clear that it's the stuffing they are after. Does anyone know how I can keep this from happening?

A. They aren't eating it, they are using it to build their nests. The only thing you can do is put them away until the nesting season is over. Once they have found that good stuff for their nests, they won't leave it alone!

What do you use to clean the plastic webbing on outdoor patio furniture?
Q. The plastic strapping/webbing on my outdoor patio furniture has become "grungy" over the past year. I would like to know what is the best method to clean the furniture webbing/strapping?

A. I use Mean Green, and scrub, outside, with a toilet brush.

How can I know if I'll be a good Interior Designer?

Q. I really want to be a good Interior Designer but I keep getting scared that I won't be able to do it. There are many things on my side such as creativity, good taste, like to research products and have an interest in all things related to it (even learning some electrical, plumbing, construction, and furniture building). But I think I can be a little ADD and miss details which I know are important. I'm going to try some medication for this but it still scares me. Also I can be impulsive. Any suggestions? How will I know if I'll be a good Designer? Also how would you recommend getting into the field. I'm in school for my ID Associates Degree but would love advice on how to get in there. (No furniture sales store rep!) If you were to hire an intern what would you look for? Thanks

A. Are you able to envision the finished project before you begin? People who are creative enough to have a vision for their work seem to make the best Interior Designers. However, you have to be practical enough to integrate your client's financial preferences for spending and also, you have to take into account practical considerations like natural lighting, color & style preferences, and the intended use of the space. You can be the most creative visionary, but if your client thinks it is just impractical, you won't get much return business.

Does a bike in a foyer violate the UK fire fire regulations?
Q. I live in a house that has been converted into five flats and there is a large foyer at the entrance. I have a rather expensive bike and I lock it in the foyer area, out of the way of everyone. My landlord has advised me that this is against UK fire regulations. I am a little confused at this since there is a truck load of other unused furniture, building equipment, a clothes dryer and other junk in the foyer as well.

Is my landlord correct that I canât store my bike in the area but the rest of the stuff is ok? To clarify the foyer is large and the bike is defiantly not in the way of any paths or doorways. I canât seem to find a decent answer on the web.

Thanks for your time!

A. Your landlord is right but you could tell him that the rest of the stuff is in breach of the fire regulations as well .

what are some furniture sites comparible to pottery barn but less exspensive?

Can you explain the extensive features of the application of roofing materials?

Q. Can you explain the extensive features of the application of roofing materials? What type of reflective results they can provide?

A. The application of Liquid applied acrylic coatings is rather simple. All that's needed is a paint roller or an airless spray rig. The reflective results are 85% UV reflective. You can purchase these coatings on the web page listed below. The different types of coatings are Benchmark and Rapid Roof.

What is the linear coverage (length) of a roll of double coverage roll roofing material?
Q. How many feet long is a roll of double coverage roofing material?

A. One roll of this product (also called 19" selvedge, duplex, or half-lap roofing) will cover 50 sq ft. Technically speaking, this means the roll is 35' 4" long. The rolls are usually a couple of inches long.

Keep in mind that the material is 36" wide and actually laps 19" -- just a bit more than half, so you only get 17" of coverage per run.

Rolled rubber roofing material, where can I buy it?
Q. I'm looking for a retail dealer in east Texas that sells rolled rubber roofing material at least 8 ft. wide.

A. don't think HD has it. and it is not really a DIY product. i've used it a few times and there are a few special methods you need to know.

try this site, they have someone in texas. i think you want to ask for edpm roofing: http://www.roofingproductsunlimited.com/aboutus.html

How to find the best home loan calculator app on Samsung Galaxy S3?

Q. How to find the best home loan calculator app on Samsung Galaxy S3? i need a loan calculator app, but i can't find the one i really want! so can anyone show me the best loan calculator app for Galaxy S3?

A. Well, i heard a good home loan calculator app called Quicken, you can try that.

How much debt is too much when you want to apply for a home loan?
Q. I would like to apply for a home loan, but I have some credit card debt. I have good credit - never missed a payment, never been late, etc. I just don't know if having credit card debt will cause me to be declined.

A. The bank will add in your credit card dept along with any other loans or debts and will assess it against your income and the amount of your home loan will be estimated taking into account your ability to pay.

A bank will usually take the total amount of your credit card limit as your debt, not how much you've used of it. So, if you have a card limit of $30,000 but have only used up $1000 of it the bank will see it that your debt is $30,000, not the $1000. That's the downside. Banks won't usually decline you for a home loan just because you have a c/card. They work on your ability to pay your loan.

If possible, try and pay off your card and destroy it! Have a debit card instead, then you only have access to money that you have, not money that you don't have!

How does applying for a Home Loan Affect your credit score?
Q. I want to apply for Home Loan and see how much we qualify for. My question is that if we do not like the number and want to wait how will it affect our credit score if we decide to wait and save for a bigger down payment. I want to avail the $8000.00 tax credit. Does anybody know if it is an ongoing thing or it is only for the year 2009.

A. no not unless you apply for a home loan at several places. if too many lenders are pulling credit in a short period of time it can have an impact upon score.

But one or 2 every quarter is no big deal.

$8,000 tax credit right now is only good for purchased up thru 11/30/2009. There is no law yet that extends it past that.

Who's responsibility is it to prep an outside area on a building to be painted by a contractor?
Q. I am having a dust up with a home painting contractor. I told him I wanted the place that's going to be painted cleaned and stripped before he applies the new paint. He said if I wanted that done, I'd have to do it myself, otherwise he just paints over the area "as is." The contract doesn't mention anything about the prepping. I thought that goes without saying that the place to be painted needs to be cleaned and stripped. Who is correct?

A. a contract is a contract , if you sign it, you are agreeing to the terms. However painting generally requires some prep work , And In many cases, the prep work can be 80% of the job.

he should have clarified all this beforehand...find annother painter. he is being sneaky and not honest right from the start

I have a split level home built in 1986. What changes can I make to update it and increase my resale value?

Q. Upper Level - 1 master with small 3/4 bath; 2 guest bdrms; 1 full bath
Mid Level - front room and kitchen
Lower Level - office; 3/4 bath; and family room with fireplace.

We recently had a new roof and siding put on and plan on landscaping the front for "curb-appeal" in the spring. In the meanwhile, we were hoping to get some ideas on how to spruce up the house DIY style.

Initial thoughts are:
1) Replacing vinyl flooring in all bathrooms with ceramic tile.
2) Refinishing kitchen cabinetry (their all wood)
3) Putting in laminate wood flooring in kitchen.
4) Replacing appliances (they're all probably 10 years old) if there's money left.

Any advice or other suggestions.

A. Kitchen remodel is your best "bang for the buck" people really look at the kitchen when looking for a home a up to date kitchen is your best option!

How do you match hardwood floors to exsisting cabinets?
Q. What would be the best color or type of hardwood flooring or other material to match to existing walnut Kitchen cabinetry?

A. most of the time if the cabinets are dark, then the flooring is light and so on. Basically you want a little contrast between the two so the whole kitchen doesn't disappear into a one tone black hole.

Learn kitchen cabinetry?
Q. I'm interested in learning kitchen cabinetry but don't know where to start. Any tips? I don't mind paying $ to take courses or working as a helper....

What are some decorateing ideas for teen bedrooms?

Q. Cool ideas for teen girls bedroom something funky, cool, and teenager like. Ages 14-16 years thanks

A. Choosing a strict color scheme that you like is really important, because often this is what determines the flow of your room. Have two main colors (eg. blue and brown) and one neutral color.

Paint your walls a neutral color like cream or beige (white can be a bit harsh). Studies have shown that a neutral color on the walls and floor of a room increases motivation and self-esteem, if you're interested!

Personally, I love pbteen.com for teen bedrooms. Not all the products come cheap, but all of them could last you a lifetime. PBTeen offers great textiles for any look. If you are a bit strapped for cash then the images on the site on their own are great for ideas.

Is there any way to seal brick on your homes exterior?

Q. My house is in need of help. I have a sandy textured brick on the exterior (about 30 years old). The brick seems to have lost its coating and is crumbling off and spaulding out. It gets especially worse during the winter as it freezes and thaws. Is there any product that I could spray on the brick to seal it and stop this?
Thank you for all of your responses. I found more info on the net. Cosmo, you were right about the mortor tuck. Without that done first, trying to seal the brick won't do a thing. I'm having a mason look at it and quote me. I dont want to paint the brick, even though it probly is the longest lasting solution, and my wife is dead set against it. So it looks like Im going to get the mortor joints right first, and then apply the Behr sealer.

A. I am afraid your bricks may be too far gone for a sealer. Thompson's would be one step better than water and, in my opinion would be a waste of good money and even more valuable time.

Your home must be pretty old to have this ocuring. If your brick is to the point of crumbling, I think you are past the point of help for anything that can be applied with a brush or a spray gun. I would consult a mason. Perhaps the damage you are seeing is more cosmetic than structural. A mason may suggest a mortar tuck. This is where you dig out any loose mortar and replace it with new. Its a big job, but at some point in any stone building, it is necessary.

I don't want to alarm you, as your brick is still likely to outlast you.

how much will it cost to replace home exterior?
Q. i'm thinking of buying a house that has ugly painted cedar exterior and replacing it with a nice italian/spanish stucco. does anyone know how much it will cost and if it's a wise and durable option? how long it will take to do? (i really don't like vinyl siding).

A. if it were me i would just change the color but if you want stucco you would have to remove the old siding and reseal the house stucco is not hard to do but it takes time need to hire a contractor to do it mite get a better price if you tare off the of siding and help with the project

Whats the best way to catch mice?

Q. I have tried the humane way, but gave up on that when they moved in to my babies bedroom. Since then i have used 2 different types of poison, glue boards and snap traps. they dont go near the poison and have escaped the glue, and licked the chocolate off the snap trap without setting it off.
Im at the end of my tether, this is a new property and all the flats have been infested with them due to shabby workmanship.
please help me im going out of my mind!

A. Use a mouse trap. Usually, a mouse trap is rectangular in shape and it is made of iron wire mesh. However, u may have to keep a piece of meat or good smelling stuff inside the cage. You will not find blood and flesh splattered. But you will surely find the mouse very much alive and kicking

How do I trade off waking up for the baby with my husband?
Q. We have one baby, 3 bedrooms, and one baby monitor. We have been all sleeping in separate rooms. My husband and I both work and we both seem to be losing a lot of sleep. I am still nursing at night. How do we share the load?

A. If you are still nursing this really makes it difficult... it probably should still be you in the middle of the night unfortunatly. Unless you want to pump and then put it in bottles for him to give to your baby.

That's really the only option right now... or possibly you can do all the getting up and nursing one night and then the next night he could go get the baby - change him/her and bring the baby to you in bed to feed it. then when you're done - he can take the baby back and get him/her back and settled down again. This trading off can work out if you don't want to pump.

good luck. I know what you are feeling :/

what is the best baby sound/video monitor in the market today?
Q. Would i really need a video monitor for my baby? Our bedrooms are on the second floor, and I do most household chores on the first floor. Would the sound monitor be sufficient?

A. We got the "Day and Night Handheld Color Video Monitor" made by Summer Infant Products from Babies R Us for about $170. We have 3 floors, and the recpetion is great. It also has the IR light so you can see your baby at night from anywhere else (as well as hear him/her).

I recommend it! :-)

What's your best money saving tips?

Q. As a SAHM and just in general a frugal person, I am always looking for tips to save money. I will share a few of mine too. Here are my favorite money saving tips

Use a crock pot, it takes less money to run than your oves, saves tons of time, food turns out great, and it doesn't heat the house.

Use a Toaster oven. When I'm not cooking in the crock pot I'm cooking in my toaster oven. I bought one big enough to bake pies, bread, cake in square cake pan, cookies, chicken, steaks, etc..... I bought a regular toaster for making toast. I feel making toast in a large toaster oven is a waste of electricity.

Buy used when possible. I bought my sons loft bed for $150 the same exact bed sales for $1000 at our local kids furniture store. I bought his power wheels 2 seater jeep for $30. and I bought a Quadra Fire gas insert for $250, we were looking at the same one at a local store for $2500. These are just a few bargains I have found.

A. So many tips, so little room! I save plastic bowls from cottage cheese, yogurt, cream cheese, etc. They are great for organizing small items like nails and screws, or can be used when painting. Same for coffee cans. I save my daily newspapers and then wet them and roll into logs that I use in my fireplace in the winter. Freecycle is another great thing! I also clean and reuse plastic water bottles. I save my large plastic bottles for my greenhouse though. I will fill them with water, paint them with black spray paint and use them as a heat sink when the weather gets cold and my greenhouse needs warmth. When it warms up and the bottles are not needed, I use the water from the bottles to water my plants. Right now, I'm saving the caps from beer bottles to make a cool art project outside! It's my sister's idea! I mostly shop at thrift stores or consignment stores for clothing, and yes, I do hang my clothes outside on a clothesline!

Inexpensive living room furniture?

Q. I am moving in October and would like to buy new living room furniture. Basically I would like a sofa, chair, some type of tables (but not committed to anything). ottoman and TV armoire. Because I bought all of this only a few years ago, I don't want to go overboard, but want something modern and comfortable. And of course not too expensive.

A. try the ikea website for ideas.

Reupholstery or slip cover for living room furniture?
Q. I am in desperate need of living room furniture but do not have the money. Which is easier and looks better reupholstering or putting slip covers on my furniture? What is the average cost? Do you have any suggestions of where to look? Also any suggestions for where to find furniture. I am in North Carolina. Thank you.

A. I would try this website for slipcover information: http://www.allaboutslipcovers.com. This will give you all the information you need on slipcovers- price, colors, fabrics, etc. Personally, I think slipcovers are best because upholstering is hard and it can look bad if not done right. Also, slipcovers are easy to put on and throw in the washer if they get stained. Slipcovers look very Pottery Barn-ish or contemporary... they are perfect and I believe they run a bit cheaper as well.

What color should I paint my living room walls to match red furniture?
Q. I want to buy a red leather living room furniture set, but I dont know what color to paint the walls...HELP!!

A. play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to find colors that you like. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family & color name, the "painted" rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours:
http://www.sherwin.com/visualizer/

I think a green like "picnic" (# 6731) would contrast the red & make it POP!

You can take a photo of your house & upload it to the makeover gallery on this website:
http://www.roomvues.com/
You can get color suggestions & for $5 they'll photoshop them onto your room so that you can get an idea of what it will look like.

Once a baby is birthed, is it necessary to cut the umbilical cord right away?

Q. I was watching 'I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant' and a woman had her baby on her bedroom floor. She was instructed by the the 911 dispatcher to get a shoe string and cut the umbilical cord.

Would it have been detrimental to the child's health had she waited for the paramedics to arrive so they could do it?

A. Leaving it on for a while will do no harm, some people belive you should leave it until it stops pulsating, so that baby gets all the rest of the nutrients.
When the cord touches the air it starts to dry up.
Baby can breath while still attched to the umbilical cord.

Which part from Insidious was frightning to you or creeped you out?
Q. The part that creeped me out more was when the mom was hearing voices in her babys bedroom from the baby monitor. Then when she gets closer to the stairs a voice screams really loud like " I WANT IT NOW". That really creeped me out. So what about you?:)

A. best movie of my life! its so hard to choose but i would have to say when the demon face was behind the dad, or when that man was walking outside the window near the mom and grabbed her haha!

Best way to change room color without damaging walls?
Q. I want to change my baby blue bedroom to black and orange but I'm 20 and should move out in a couple years and my parents don't want either color on the walls because they are hard to paint over. I was wondering if there was an easy way to change the color without doing anything to the drywall? Are there cheap temporary wall panels I can put up and paint?

A. Sounds like you have bold taste, and it is definitely time to get rid of that baby blue. One option might be to promise to paint the room back to whatever color your parents choose when you leave, but I think you may be happier implementing your bold choices in a different way to create more focus and impact to your design.

Suggest painting the walls a dark or light gray that your parents could approve, and then incorporating the bold black and orange colors in furniture, linens and accessories. If you take a look at the following websites, you can see that the bold colors you love really "pop" against the more neutral, contrasting background.

I noticed that several of these photos have a feature wall, or portion of a feature wall, that is painted orange. You could get the same impact by making a large headboard covered with orange fabric or out of wood, painted orange. Have attached a website with simple ideas for headboards.

Hope this helps!

Can I use an AC wall light dimmer as a 12V voltage regulator?
Q. Hi. I need to reduce the voltage of a DC power supply from 16V (external laptop battery) down to 12V so I can use it as a power supply for my other 12 volts gadgets. Can I use an AC wall light dimmer for this? I've read that this works by reducing voltage so an incandescent lamp can be dimmed. I'd like to know your thoughts if it will work for my purpose.

A. You need to learn what regulation means. You might get it to reduce the voltage but that is NOT regulating it.

do i paint my cabinets dark and walls light or the other way around?
Q. I want to paint my kitchen walls and cabinets but dont know if the walls should be a little darker than the cabinets or maybe the walls light and the cabinets dark. Also I have paneling I want to paint so do I paint it a different color than the walls and cabinets.

A. I'd paint the cabinets lighter and the walls a little darker shade. Nothing hardly makes a house look as old or as out of style as dark cabinets. Dark cabinets just scream 1970's and 1980's. The paneling color partly depends on where it is. You also may want to use some wood putty over the grooves in the wood paneling if it's the wide 1970's style paneling. If the panels are narrower (about 2" or so), I'd leave the grooves in place.

Don't worry about the room being too dark if you go with a slightly darker color for the walls. The walls don't have to be all that much darker than the cabinets. I'd go with a medium tone for the walls and a light tone for the cabinets.

What are the major (and minor) risks in owning a home built in 1916?

Q. I came across a beautiful Craftsman style home built in 1916 and wonder how much of a task it would be to keep up a home that old.

A. Old homes can have character. I bought a home built in 1910 and my only apprehension was that I knew nothing about steam heat. But the boiler was only 1 year old and heatinghelp.com helped me tune that for comfort and efficiency, so I now actually prefer that over scorched air. The steel combo storm/screens are quite old, but seal the old windows up in winter for no drafts, and previous owner had insulated. Thermal mass of drywall over plaster holds the temperature, and residual heat from steam radiators makes a lower temperature comfortable. So my highest gas bill for 3 bedroom home in sub-zero F temperatures has been under $200.

Basically hire someone to do a good inspection to see if the home has issues or if it has had upgrades that would minimize anything major in the near future.

How can i get home building materials at builders cost?
Q. all home building supplies at the best price and home blueprint

A. The idea of material suppliers giving wholesale or discounted prices has to do with perceived volume of business. If you are building a house, take the total material list to a couple of lumber yards for a bid on the total package. Most of the time, a lumber yard will bid a complete house material package at or near the wholesale price. Builders who buy half a million dollars a year from a lumber yard are going to get the best prices and likely have an assigned salesman to cater to him. Having an apartment building or a contractor's license is not going to give someone the right to demand any significant discount. If you are a high volume buyer with the money to pay, that will the only credential you will need for the best service and the best prices from any business you walk into.

If you are just wanting wholesale prices on small quantity odds and ends, your best bet is to go to a place like Home Depot. I have found the level of service at Home Depot to be in line with the volume of my business there, which is minimal.

Where to begin the custom-home building process?
Q. Can someone point me to a good consumer-oriented website or offer advice on the steps toward getting a custom home built? My wife and I have a couple lots in mind, we're narrowing down a list of floor plans. We could use some guidance as far what tasks â and in what order â we should be planning for.

A. the process is going to be different for different areas. i would recommend going to amazon.com and buying a few books on how to be your own general contractor, and how to build your own home. (i have i think is called "building your own home on a shoe string") some go into more detail than others. but read a few and get aquainted with some of the terms and such. they will also go through the steps.
but here are the basic steps.
1) find /buy land. make sure it meets all of your requirements, and the local requirements for building. consider a perk test, septic planning, access roads, frontage, any minimum size requirements.
2) site planning. where is the septic located (or are you on town sewer and water). where is the house going, where is the well going (if not on town water) where is the electric going to come in from. and which way will the house be oriented (stake out the corners)
3) excavation and foundation (this will go off the plans that you have decided on) (be prepared for the unexpected, who knows what they will find when they dig)
4) framing
5) skinning (roof and exterior walls and maybe siding, windows) inside is now protected from the elements)
6) electric, plumbing, hvac
7) insulating
8) interior walls, floors, ceilings
9) appliances, painting, finish electrical and plubing fixtures.
10) final walkthrough, cleanup, touchup.

those are the basics

How can I get the security light to turn off on my Buick?

Q. I had a new stereo put in and the security light is stuck on, because you need the OEM stereo system to put in the code to turn it off(I think, unless you think I can put the codes in the new deck by pushing buttons on it). I have to take a driver safety test and was wondering if there is an easy way to take a fuse out or cut a wire to get it off.

Or the other option to put a piece of electrical tape over it, or maybe use a black sharpie pin? But will that make the driving inspector suspicious thinking I am covering up the check engine light?

Will they even care if I have warning lights going off during the drive test anyways?

A. I sort of doubt they will care about the security light being on. But if they see that it has been covered up they will certainly get suspicious. I don't think the security light has anything to do with the stereo not being stock. A GM dealership is the only place that has the equipment needed to diagnose and repair the problem.

Is it best to install security lights on their own switch, or not?
Q. I am having security lights- with a motion detector that trips the light for 20 seconds- installed on the outside of my home. Should I get the electrician to install them on a switch that I can turn on and off? Is there any reason I wouldn't put them on a switch, (it does cost more to wire that way). I just don't want to have to get it done later if it is best for them to be on a switch.

A. I recommend you put them on a switch, if you ever need them to stay on for an extended period of time you will be able to control them, if you get the proper security light.

The security light is on my 2001 buick regal LS wont start how do I fix this?
Q. I have a 2001 buick regal LS. I recently had to change the steering column out and now the care will not start. I am thinking its because the security light is on. Does anyone know how to reset the code to make the security light go off so the car will start? Or if maybe it could be something else?

A. Try this to reset the pass-lock security system.

This is free and all it takes is about 35 minutes of your time. If it doesn't work, all you are out is a little bit of your time.

First. make sure the battery is fully charged. If you have automatic headlights or daytime running lights disable them and it will help save your battery power. You should find instructions for this in your owner's manual. You could park the car in the sunlight which would not activate your head lights on most models.

Turn off all of the vehicle accessories. Roll down the windows. You roll down the windows just in case your doors lock while resetting your pass-lock security system.

Place the key in the ignition. Turn the key to the run position but don't start the engine. Don't use the accessories position as this will not work.

Leave the ignition in the on position for 10 minutes. At the 10 minute mark the security light will flash.

When the security light flashes turn the ignition off.

Wait a minute

Repeat these steps two more times. Do not start the engine or place the ignition in the accessories position or you will need to start over from the beginning.

After the third time of doing this your security system should be reset.

You say you changed the steering column. If this procedure does not work you may need to take the car to your nearest GM service department and get that "Great GM Feeling". If you did not install the original ignition switch with the new steering column it is very possible that the new ignition switch needs to be matched with the Pass Lock security system. This can only be done by a GM dealer because this process requires the use of a special scan tool connected to the diagnostic port. Most likely the only person that you will find with this scan tool is a GM dealer.

And no, the Pass Lock 2 security system can not be disabled. It is integrated into the car's computer systems and can not be bypassed or disabled.

How do home energy audits save money for utility companies?

Q. Recently my home was given a free home energy audit in which a number of energy saving fixtures were added to my home. I understand the obvious ways in which this saves money for me, the end user, but I'm struggling to understand how this saves money for the utilities. In the end, I'm paying them less as a result. Someone please help me understand their business model?

A. Our government believes that it's very very difficult by now to think that the building of more electric generating plants (to c reat e more electricity) is very "worth it" any more, if we can avoid it somehow such as by conserving electricity in various ways to use and need less or at least no "more"
The reasons experts think this, is various things, such as too much unhealthful pollution already from existing power plants, and also other problems like, finding places to put them (putting them way off into vacant land many many miles from anywhere, isn't too good a way because during the transmitting of the power over electrical lines over long distances, a great deal of the electricity gets lost sort of up into the air, I guess, before it reaches the users). And too much fuel use to run the plants.

Therefore, some of our governments or their agencies, are offering a business offer to many of the power plant companies, saying to them: Convince or help your customers to somehow use less energy at home per person or per household, and we'll give you money benefits for doing so. Those money benefits are probably reductions in how much taxes the companies have to pay on their profits (yes, companies ,like people, pay some taxes, on things like income. The reasoning for that, is partly that companies benefit greatly from things they need that the government provides: roads, fire protection, security like police protection, and many other things, and they tend to cost a lot of money, so all those benefiting, including companies have to pay taxes to help pay for everything.).

Also , probably the percentage of profit c ompanies get from selling electricity, is or would be higher from existing plants , than from new ones because of how expensive new ones are to build. So, even separate from getting their taxes lowered by not building new plants, they benefit probably separately by getting electricity conserved by things like energy audits: because if they can conserve electricity and tend to have the existing plants be enough for the needs, they profit more because of more profits resulting from existing plants compared to new ones.

How do I become a home energy auditor?
Q. I think there will be a lot of future demand for home energy audits as energy costs continue to rise. How do I get certified to conduct home energy audits?

A. Am,here

Can anyone tell me about Home Energy Auditor courses online?
Q. My husband wants to become a certified home energy auditor. We checked online and there are several courses. Can someone tell us who is reputable and offers an online course?

A. I think he's making a good choice. We've known for years that we need to cut energy usage where ever we can.I've written some articles about saving energy and you can read them here:
http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Dave_Stefko

Now the government is giving us incentives like the tax credits for renewable energy. Some states are giving credits and/or rebates. We also have them for energy saving devices.I personally think we will see a growing need for Certified Home Energy Auditors.
. There are several online schools, but what you want is one that offers certification. Check out the resource box for a link to a great site.

What is the best, if any, way to sell my oak bedroom furniture, please read ?

Q. I have a beutiful set of oak bedroom furniture that i actually got for next to nothing but it is great. I don't know anything about the value of furniture, but now that I am 56, I am finding that things I have in my house are actually collectibles etc. I guess there is something good about being on the wrong side of 50 :) :) :) I bought it "used" in 1989 but it is like perfect and includes 2 night stands, big chester drawers with mirror and head for bed. ?? thanks for you furniture people I can help with children things and sewing :) and selling on ebay and of course jesus things

A. The sad part of having anything beautiful, like well-made furniture, is that many people can't or won't appreciate it. I found this to be true when an Appraiser came through an estate I was handling and put these ridiculously small values on some fine pieces of furniture. His answer was that there is a small market for "used" furniture; most young people today would rather go to a "Big Box" store and buy some "you-build-it" crap made out of particle board than spend a few dollars more and have something they can cherish for years.
You can certainly try selling the suite on eBay, but unless the set is really old, you may not find a buyer...
You may want to try placing an ad in the classifieds of your local paper, but that usually entails alot of unwarranted phone calls.
We have "consignment" shops in this area that will take in items like this, but, if you have a timely need for cash, you may have to wait a while before the set sells.
Auction houses are always looking for quality merchandise, but there again you have to be careful, as their costs may eat up a lot of your possible gain.
Word-of-mouth may be the easiest; letting people know at work, your place of worship, etc.
And then, there is always donation. You state that you got for "next to nothing", so if you're not looking to make a few bucks, need the space, and want to feel good about it, you can call a local charitable orgainzation. They could come pick it up for nothing and you get a decent tax write off.
Good luck....Like I said, nice pieces can be difficult to "get rid" of. I have two of my parents solid mahogany dressers that neither of my sons want, so I don't know where they will end up..........

How long does it usually take to get bedroom furniture? Do most stores have you "order" the furniture?
Q. I'm in the market for some new bedroom furniture. I'm not necessarily in a hurry to get it, but I am curious about how long I can expect the process to take. I plan on buying from a "showroom" type furniture store, as opposed to a warehouse or clearance center. Plus, I'm getting a king bed and I hear that most stores cater towards customers looking for queens. I guess I will have to "order" the furniture. If you ordered from a store like this, how long did it take?

Also, I did find one set that i like, but i was told they cant deliver for 7-8 weeks due to back order. Is that standard wait time or way too long?

A. If you really like the set and the price, then I guess it is worth the wait.

I had to wait that long to get the living room sofa I special ordered.

And my bed took even longer but then we had an artist make a special headboard.

How can I camouflage a bright stainless steel washer?

Q. It's in the middle of my kitchen cabinetry, next to the dishwasher, thanks to my landlord who really should have stuck a cabinet door in front of it. Something solid like a mirror won't work, given the fact that the washer already sticks out a bit from the surrounding cabinetry. I'm thinking of an attractive appliance film of some kind, cut to allow for all the hills and valleys; maybe just a darker shade of metal would hide it. Any ideas?

A. If you put other stainless steel items in your kitchen, like the face of the dishwasher, the refrigerator, etc. Then the washer may not stick out as much. Also if you could paint the lower cabinets to either match or gray, that might help. Roxanne

What color dining room table should I get for my nook?
Q. My entire kitchen cabinetry is oak wood that is stained a medium-mojagany. In my nook area, I have a ton of cabinetry in there, so I'm thinking if I try to match the table to the cabinets, it may be too much. I was thinking a lighter color table... does anyone have suggestions? It cannot be glass of any sort because we have 5 young kids that will use the table for each meal. Thanks in advance!

A. Go with something painted that coordinates with your kitchen outside of the cabinet color/grain -- cream, blue, green, yellow, red, or black. Or change materials -- get a metal and slate/tile table. Or, mix light and dark wood tones so it breaks up the look, but looks deliberate, not mismatched. Or go ahead and match your cabinets for the top of the table, but have the rest be metal or painted another color.

Commercial lighting fixtures - where to get reliable reviews?
Q. We are making a complete lighting plan for a new warehouse and we need a good site with reliable commercial lighting fixtures reviews. Any suggestions?

A. What kind of commercial lighting fixtures are you interested in? If you need a general review site, I would recommend http://www.commerciallightingfixtures.org/.

Does anyone know of a commercial lightset that can be raised on a flagpole to make it a Christmas tree?
Q. This is a 30' pole. I think that someone makes a commercial light "kit" that can be raised on the pole to make it look like a large Christmas tree at night.

A. Due to wind and tangeling the tree you want has to be secure. Here's what you have to do to make the tree, i use to do this for amusement parks in California. You have to make a small steel ring for the top and a larger steel ring for the bottom.Start at the center at bottom of large ring and pull up to small ring connecting each strand then towards the center again, then plug in to a power strip on the pole. Repeat with all strands, the rings must be secured to the pole either by cables or clamps. and to be safe a snorkle lift or cherry picker should be used for safty. Good luck

I have looked and craigslist and searched the web, but I guess perhaps the best thing would to be contact other companies who build homes and see if they have any entry positions? also What kind of schooling is required to be a general contractor, I want to eventually be in the supervisory position once Ive learned everything.

A. 1. You should possess a degree or basic qualification in construction, civil engineering or related subjects.

Is it legal for a home improvement contractor to walk off the job?
Q. We hired a home improvement contractor for a major landscaping job. He completed about 80% of the work but then disappeared. Right before he disappeared, he asked if we minded paying him for the work he already completed. He seemed nice so we agreed. Then, he vanished, even though he signed a contract with us saying that he was supposed to do our driveway (which he didn't -- and now it is near winter and we have no driveway). Can he legally do this? (walk off a job even though the work in the contract is incomplete)

A. Never Pay until the job is DONE.

Never

No matter HOW NICE he seems.

Of course if he is contractually obligated to finish the job - but Now YOU have got to compel him to do it. (and you've lost hour hammer)

(no pun on the contracting thing)

It will probably be cost effective to hire someone to finish the job... and consider this a lesson learned.

I assume you've called him to ask "what's up"? And I also assume he's UNAVAILABLE, right?

What home security system should we get?

Q. My wife and I are thinking about getting a home security system. We live in the Los Angeles area. Any thoughts or suggestions?

A. This is a pretty general question and is really influenced by what your looking for. Security systems range from the ghetto ones you install yourself that just make noise, to really high tech equipment. Most people tend to settle for a home security system that is sold by a dealer that is installed by a trained technician, and is actively monitored by a company and can link up with the police. I'm not sure which dealers would be selling around there if any, but a little research should be able to tell you that much. After that it's just a matter of finding out how much you want to pay, because the standard monthly monitoring rate varies from about $35 to $49.99. Typically two-way systems which communicate trough the landline are cheapest, while cell primary systems which communicate through a cell unit attached to the system cost more. Don't get fooled into paying any activation fee's though, and fight to get at least 6 points of equipment. Motion sensors, glassbreak sensors, and smokes are worth 2 each, while door/window sensors, and keyfobs are worth 1. That way the sales rep won't be ripping you off. Just be sure to READ the contract they'll make you sign, because they won't tell you the whole truth.

How to change home security system battery?
Q. We have a low batter signal on our home security system, and we can't figure out how to change the battery and the "headquarters" are closed so we can't reach anybody tonight. Does anyone know how to do it?

A. Locate the battery compartment on your home security system. Most of the time it is located under the keypad cover.

Step 2Use a flat-head screwdriver to gently pry off any covers over the battery compartment, if necessary.

Step 3Determine which size of batteries your system uses by looking at the old batteries in the compartment, or by checking the instruction manual that came with the system. Also notice the position the batteries are in. Get the size of battery you need.

Step 4Check to see if the old batteries have leaked into the battery compartment. Use caution when removing them and cleaning the compartment.

Step 5Once the old batteries have been removed, immediately discard them so that you wonât mistakenly put them back in the compartment.

Step 6Install the new batteries, making sure you put them in properly.

Step 7Run the battery check test, following the instructions in the manual for the system.

Help me find a good home security system?
Q. I am having problems with the new home security system I bought for my home. It just doesn't work right. Can someone please recommend a good home security system I can buy for my home.

A. There are lot of home security systems available on the market for sale. Most of these home security systems are complete junk, so it is always advisable to do a little research before you go and spend your money to purchase them. You wouldn't have had this problem If you did some research on the security system before you went out and spend money on it.

Where can I get fairly good living room furniture, for a good price?

Q. hey im 20 and getting ready to move out of moms for not twice but the THIRD time ;p anways this time im living on my own without roomates, we rented really nice leather furniture last time.....but this time i dont want to go down that route again, where can i get GOOD cheap living room furniture/tv stands etc.?

A. You are going to get your best furniture for the money second-hand.

I used to sell new furniture and I was surprised to find the $3000.00 bedroom sets I was selling were attractive veneer over pressed wood. (A corner chipped from the footboard of the bed and exposed the pressed wood.)

I used to be in the antiques and collectibles biz and your best furniture for the money will be from the 1950's and before. It will be solid wood. The dresser drawers will have solid wood sides, backs, and bottoms. The back of the piece will often be wood, also. They may even have dovetailed construction attaching the sides of the drawers to the front of the drawer. Check out drawers nowadays. The sides and back are not wood, and neither is the back of the piece. They use this cardboardish stuff a lot of the time.

The dining tables will be solid wood, as will the cocktail and end tables. Find a piece with the shape or design you like. You can always spray paint it and/or change out the hardware. One or both of those two steps can completely transform a piece.

I had an incredibly unattractive chest of drawers once-they were in brown and yellow. I was going to get rid of it but before I did that, I examined it. It was superbly constructed-I just hadn't paid much attention to it because I had found it at a great price and bought it for resale. I re-did it for a child in my family in blue and white with pewter looking Winnie the Pooh hardware (knobs). It looked great.

You can get armoires from the 1940's that are sturdy and can be used for your TV and other electronics. (Make sure the sides and back can support the strong shelving you need.) Since they are not that old or valuable you don't have to feel badly about drilling holes in the back (for the cords) or installing shelves. Dealers order this furniture from England in big shipping cartons. Find someone who does that-you can probably get the piece for $150 or less. You can change out the piece later and install bookshelves or as a hanging closet (it's original use) if you choose to.

Another TV stand option is a sofa table, cocktail table, or chest of drawers. The drawers can be used to store music and DVDs. You can paint it a flat black and put silver or pewter hardware on the drawers for a contemporary look. You can even put a piece of clear glass or mirror on top for more sparkle.

Thrift stores, garage sales, consignment shops and even the curb (you can't believe what I have found on people's curbs that they were discarding) are all good furniture options. Think outside the box, look at the lines of the furniture and what it can be, not what it currently looks like. (That's what paint is for). Avoid cheap furniture-anything of pressed wood or with pseudo wood grain on it.

Note: There are some specific techniques to spray painting:
1-Initially shake the can upside-down for three minutes. I know it is boring but it makes a difference.
2-Do not try to cover the piece in the first coat. Each coat must be light. The first coat will leave much of the original finish showing. Count on at least three coats. Four if it is a surface that will get handled or used a lot. Shake often. If you get impatient and coat it too heavily, it will run. Not attractive and easily avoided with care and patience.
3-Unless it is a small, inexpensive, decorative piece that will rarely get handled, don't buy the cheapest spray paint at $1.00 per can. There is a quality difference. The more expensive paints have more pigment and cover better.

Good luck with your new place.
You'll have more success if you don't worry about furnishing it instantly and take your time looking. Great things will pop up if you are patient.
It does not have to be done in one week or even a month.

If your room seems empty as you are looking for furniture, add a couple of large trees or plants to the space. Tell people you are going for the minimalist look :)

Where to buy living room furniture on budget?
Q. I am going to medical school and am buying my first condo. I have saved substantially for this moment, but I am by no means rich. I will be renting out a room in the condo to pay the billls. The point is, I don't have a lot of money. Where can I buy living room furniture on a budget? I've tried rooms-to-go. Any other suggestions??

A. Ikea often has very cheap but good and fashionable furniture. You could also try a local Salvation Army thrift store or one run by a similar charity.

Certain pieces can be got on the cheap from places like Target - they may not sell couches and armchairs, but they have cheap and durable coffee tables, shelves and TV stands.

I'd also suggest yard sales and a local classified ad section, and asking friends if they have any furniture to get rid of. Look also for estate sales.

What are industry standard rates for home staging?

Q. I've been asked to stage a few homes for a builder/contractor. I have interior design experience through furniture sales companies so my compensation has always been commission on sales. The spaces are vacant and someone else has already ordered upholstery and case goods and supposedly lighting, accessories and rugs as well.... should I charge an hourly rate? per square foot? flat fee per home? should I include a materials allowance if there aren't enough lamps or if they forgot bedding or a tablecloth or candles for the candlesticks?

A. OK depending where you are in the country, and what neighborhood your in. You can do several things. If they are supplying all the furnishings you can't up charge a fee on that, you can put a contingency in the contract that if all materials supplied by the other party are not on site, you can charge a fee for that per day it is missing. I wouldn't do an hourly rate, I would either do per square foot or flat fee for the home. Say if the home is 1800 sf and two floors and in an OK area and must be sold ASAP! Also it should only take 4-5 days to stage I would charge about $2,000. If it's your first and want to cut them a break, and you don't have a certification in home staging then probably only $500-$800. Hope I was helpful!

is there a catalog like AVON, that people can work for commissions selling home interior decorations?

Q. I know someone who saw this particular catalog, but did not get the name other than "home interior decorations". the door to door seller
would go with this catalog in a very AVON-lady way.

Is there one particular company or many? I'm not talking about direct mail services, but where an individual seller can work on commission for.

A. I believe it what you are referring to is Home Interiors & Gifts, Inc. It has no relation to Avon although Avon has its own separate home design catalog. Anyway, they're not in business anymore because they got bankrupt.

Can you help me identify and locate an old home interior picture?
Q. I can remember almost 30 years ago my mother bought me a home interior picture that was in a very heavy metal frame with a rounded glass, the print was a small boy kneeling and praying into a beam shining down on him.
I know that I have seen the picture in some bibles and I would like to know the name of the print. I would also know how I might be able to buy the picture, frame, glass etc. that was purchased for me. I have tried the homeco and the home int. web site but without the name of the print I'm having no luck.

A. If you go to "vintage pictures.com" you may get the help you need. Lots of luck to you!

Would converting a bedroom to a second bathroom add or subtract value to my home?

Q. I have a 5 bedroom home (more like 4 bedroom and a den.) I was wondering if converting one of the upstairs bedrooms into a second full bathroom would increase or decrease the value of my home?
My father is a contractor so i would pay minimal cost. Would it be more appealing to the market as 4 bed 2 bath or 5 bed 1 bath?

A. Increase especially if it is part of the Master bedroom. Most buyers want at least a 2 1/2 bathroom house

How can I turn my bedroom into a spa retreat? Please give me tips to make it a relaxing & tranquil atmosphere?
Q. My bedroom has gray-lavender walls, with white ceilings and light hardwood floors. Very simple.

I would really want to turing it into something that looks like a spa room. Something with beautiful (but contemporary/modern) decorations and ultra soft, romantic glowing lights.

Any tips?

A. Your walls are a perfect color as are your floors. They speak to a contemporary look. Choose a rich silver blue fabric for your bedding. Night tables should be simple and elegant or build them into the wall on either side of the bed. Use wall sconces with up/down lighting on either side as opposed to table lamps. If you can wire your ceiling hang a classy chandelier on dimmers. Use silk floor to ceiling drapes at your windows. If your bedroom is large enough, add an ottoman in a rich lustrous fabric....something soft. Add a soft furlike throw to the bottom of the bed. A wonderful chair/lounger in a soft fabric would be a great addition if you have room. Accessories should be simple. A few tall floor vases with reeds, pick up additional colors by adding simple contemporary artwork, and keep your dressers clean and simple. Comfort and spa is defined by clean lines and mute colors. It doesn't mean you can't have a piece of artwork that adds a burst of color. It's more about clean soft comfy fabrics and colors.

In a bedroom would a different color in a walk in a walk in closet look odd ?
Q. The paint that I used for my bedroom is expensive and I have an off white/tan extra paint on hand. My bedroom is a pastel light shade of orange, if I painted the walk in closet the off white/tan shade-- would that look odd and a mismatch ? Or would you for sure buy the same paint as the bedroom ?

A. If the closet has a door, it would be fine to paint it another color. If it were a dressing room that opened directly into the bedroom, the same color would be preferable, but for a closet? It would certainly be okay - and smart - to use the neutral, light paint you have on hand.
