Do my dining room furnitrure have to match the colors of my living room furniture?

Q. My dining room is part of my living room (its a combo). Do u think my dining room furniture has to match the colors of my living room furniture, or can it be a different color scheme?

A. Since it is one room there should be something similar in the design or colours. Example..if you have espresso coloured tables in the livingroom, then a dark or espresso dining set would be nice with the same lines as the livingroom furniture. You can use the same curtains in both ends of the room, or pick up similar colours in art or photos on the wall, or use the same runners on tables..that sort of thing. You can be different, but if you are doing that, then make it a colour for example of the chair upholstry that will match well with the livingroom. Just keep something uniform between the two rooms to unify them.

Any ideas for area rugs in my living and dining rooms, please?
Q. My living and dining rooms are in an open L shape. The walls are pale cream. Dining room furniture is cream lacquer with brass trim. Living room furniture is a cream background with a narrow old rose stripe and a wide delicate leafy floral stripe in pale green/old rose/blue. I have two slate-ish blue chairs. The floors are oak hardwood (I just ripped up cream wall to wall). I need area rugs, but I'm baffled by trying to get something to go with the floral furniture. I thought to get a green in the living room and the same rug but lapis in the dining room. I don't want anything dark, my whole house is airy and light colored. I'm looking at Milliken border rugs. I like the Remington but am afraid it's too severe. I looked at one with an Ionica border, but am not sure about the floral border with my floral furniture even tho they are both delicate. Oriental style is not an option. I have grandsons who are often here so a too light color might not be good. Any help is greatly appreciated.
What I really need is suggestions on patterns.

A. Go into your local carpet store and select a really nice carpet that suits your style. Have them order a large enough piece and have it bound to the exact size you want it.

Then you can get a really nice, well wearing rug and not spend an arm and a leg on it.

what would be the best color or stain to match black dining room set of black w mahoghony top?
Q. Dining room furniture is matte black w mahogony top and china cabinet is also black w mahogony accents. The home we purchased is circa 1900 w 2 bulit-in cabinets in the dining room which were refinished in a shotty manner and stained cherry but look horrible. What other color may be suitable w my dining set??/

A. About a year ago, We painted the laminate sink cabinet & mirror in my bathroom with a red primer, and then a light layer of black on top (done with a foam brush). It looks great, almost like mahogany. Perhaps you could try that technique.

Is it legal for a home improvement contractor to walk off the job?

Q. We hired a home improvement contractor for a major landscaping job. He completed about 80% of the work but then disappeared. Right before he disappeared, he asked if we minded paying him for the work he already completed. He seemed nice so we agreed. Then, he vanished, even though he signed a contract with us saying that he was supposed to do our driveway (which he didn't -- and now it is near winter and we have no driveway). Can he legally do this? (walk off a job even though the work in the contract is incomplete)

A. Never Pay until the job is DONE.

Never

No matter HOW NICE he seems.

Of course if he is contractually obligated to finish the job - but Now YOU have got to compel him to do it. (and you've lost hour hammer)

(no pun on the contracting thing)

It will probably be cost effective to hire someone to finish the job... and consider this a lesson learned.

I assume you've called him to ask "what's up"? And I also assume he's UNAVAILABLE, right?

Do you select your friends by their work skills?
Q. You know, slowly befriend a home contractor, drywall install/finish person, mechanic, electrician, pool installer, appliance repair person, plumber, HVAC person, landscaping person, mover person, computer specialist, etc.?

When something at home goes amiss, you just pick up the phone and get the work done for free or at a reduced rate?

A. Let's just say that if I ever want someone to help me sniff strangers butts and inhale paint fumes - I'm pretty well covered.

Where can I leave complaints about a business?
Q. Like Angieslist, but free? I had an experience with a home contractor that was simply horrible.

What kind of window treatments can you do on an arched window?

Q. I need window treatments for a 10 foot, arched window in a casual living room. I DO NOT wants swags... any ideas? I don't want to cover the whole window with long "boring" curtains... Any ideas? Pictures? Takes on where I can look? Oh, and I can sew so I could make them if you have just a picture of a great idea. thanks so much.

A. Not sure why you would want to cover such a beautiful window, but if you need to for privacy or to block strong light, here is what I would do. I would buy a narrow pleated shade to fit from just below the arched section to the bottom and mount it. Then, for the arched section, I would buy another pleated shade half the width of the window and then cut off the top rail and use the pleated material to create like a Japanese fan that would stretch across the curve at the top. You would have to figure a way to attach it to the top rail of the straight blind.

You could also do this with any fabric -- a sheer would be pretty. You could use heavy wire or a piece of flexible thin fiberglass (like the rods for the flags that go on kid's bikes) to create an arch to match the curve of the upper window. Then sew a pocket hem in the sheer, slip it over the rod, bend it into place and gather the fabric together at the bottom to make a gathered fan in the upper section. Use a spring-loaded rod to hang a separate straight sheer panel below it.

Here is a site that shows what I mean (along with some other unique suggestions):

What color paint and window treatments should we choose?
Q. My wife and I are about to renovate our living room. We plan to repaint our walls, add new window treatments, and possibly add chair rails and crown molding.

We plan on keeping our black leather sofa and red leather easy chairs. We also have medium brown hard wood floors and dark brown baseboards and doors. The walls are currently a textured egg shell white. Lastly we have ample natural lighting from the sliding glass door and large living room windows.

Please give us suggestions on what color to paint our walls and a suggested window treatment for the sliding glass door and windows. If possible provide a web link to show the colors and treatments.
BTW, we are looking for a more modern or exotic look. Oh, we're not a fan of wall paper. Would beige paint look ok?

A. First, you have to decide the style that you like. Is it traditional? Modern? Exotic? Then decorate your home accordingly. If you like exotic influences but don't want to go overboard, just have accent pieces here and there, e.g. use cushions with African pattern or have mini elephant statues or Chinese-inspired vases or something.

Since you don't mention it, I'll just give you a suggestion based on what I like. I prefer a traditional look, just because I think it's both elegant and comfortable.

Since you have red arm chairs, why don't you have a bit more red in the room? Maybe a red rug for the living area? Or red cushions for the black sofa? Make sure the textures of the cushion and the leather don't clash, though. Or you could have red curtains or walls. If you do go with curtain, make sure it's lined or it's a blackout material, because otherwise the light entering your house when the curtains are closed may be too eerie. Oh, instead of curtains, maybe you could use Roman blinds; stay away from vertical or horizontal blinds. (Except if you got the latter in the wooden varieties - those look so elegant!)

Personally, I think it's best to keep the curtains a bit more neutral, though. So, maybe use something more beige or sheer curtains. Instead, use red on the walls, BUT don't go crazy. I think the more burgundy, dark red colours would look better than bright reds. Also, depending on your budget, you could choose to use wallpapers instead. With wallpapers, you could play around with patterns as well. I'd go with beige/cream wallpaper with red accents, and red borders. That would look awesome! Or, if you prefer to paint, your current wall seems okay, maybe just paint ONE wall red. For instance, if you have a fireplace, maybe that wall could be red, and the rest could be more neutral?

Otherwise, you could play up the browns of the wood floor and door. That would be great as well. Play with textures. Look for curtain material that's not plain to prevent your home from looking drab.

Or, you could actually keep both the walls and curtains neutral, and instead have more wooden furniture, and keep your house bright. This will give the feel of a larger, more open space.

Also, play with lights. You know how there are the yellowish lights and the white, daylight sort of lights? They can really change the atmosphere of your room. So decide which one you like better, and then see if they'll go with your decor. I mean, if you like the white, daylight sort of light (like the sort they use in offices), then that probably won't work with red walls. The yellowish lights would work better in that case, as it creates a certain ambiance. However, I would go with your light preference first, since you spend more time at home at night. So if you don't like yellow lights but insist on using them just so they go with your decor, you probably will not like spending time in that room.

Hope I helped a bit. Sorry for not giving a shorter answer. I'm bored and I miss my interior decorator dad. Good luck with your home! :)

EDIT: Sure, beige goes well with both black and red, and it's a whole lot better than white.
Maybe you better re-post this question to get input from more people :) Try to post it when the traffic is slightly heavier, so there would be more people reading.

What type of window treatments should i use for our basement appartment windows?
Q. We live in a basement apartment where the windows are at ceiling height, small, and wide. Im having trouble with finding nice window treatments. Im tired of blinds, and ugly curtains. Someone help?

A. Have you considered cellular shades? They're not "industrial" looking like mini-blinds can be, and they'll add some texture and fabric to your windows. They're also great insulators, which you may need if you're living somewhere with cold winters.

Symphony Double Honeycomb cellular shades offer tons of colors to choose from so you can choose a pattern that fits your style. You can find them at http://www.blindcrafter.com/Symphony/symphony.cfm. And if they're not your style, you can do your window treatment research at BlindCrafter.com, too. They have a variety of styles and fabrics to choose from.

I hope that this insight helps.

Happy Designing!

Looking for a square glass shade for a ceiling light. Where can I find one?

Q. I have an ceiling lighting fixture that has a square glass shade that I broke last night. It is just a square piece of glass with a hole in the middle that is attached to the fixture via a screw that goes through the whole and then a cap that is put on the screw to hold the glass in place. Does anyone know if they sell these shades at a Loews, Home Depot or Target type store? I found one on amazon, but they're charging over $8 in shipping for a $3 item. Please help! Thanks!

How do I convert a fan light kit to a ceiling light?
Q. I want to use a fan light kit as a ceiling light. What do I need to do to make sure this works out?

A. I may be reading this wrong. I am certainly reading it differently than others. You want to use light kit made for a ceiling fan as a ceiling light, without a ceiling fan.

The problem here lies in the way the two are made to mount. A ceiling light has a bracket and matching holes and/or bolts to work with an electrical box. A ceiling fan light kit is made to attach to the bottom of the ceiling fan and generally has a hub base with holes on the side to attach it to the fan assembly.

I have never seen an adapter to make them work, although I am sure there is one. You will not find anything like that at Lowes or Home Depot, although they may be able to order one. Check out your local electric supply shops, the ones the electrical contractors use, Price may make it less practical.

Can you paint a ceiling light fixture? I want the actual glass globe painted - is this possible?
Q. I'm looking to paint the ceiling light fixture in my baby's bedroom. I am doing a Dr. Seuss theme and I haven't been able to find a ceiling light fixture and that's what I want. So, I want to know if it's possible to do and if so what type of paint is safe to use (non toxic, non flammable and so on) to paint Dr. Seuss characters on it. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

A. Seems like a bad idea. It will block the light and, if you ever want to change the theme, you will have to buy a new light. Just paint the ceiling around the light.

What is a good wireless home security system?
Q. Hi,
I am looking for a wireless home security system.
I don't need a system with cameras; I need windows/door sensors and motion detectors.
The most important thing is that the range coverage for the receiver should be large because the device is going to be installed in a concrete large house.

Thank you.

How can I get the security light to turn off on my Buick?

Q. I had a new stereo put in and the security light is stuck on, because you need the OEM stereo system to put in the code to turn it off(I think, unless you think I can put the codes in the new deck by pushing buttons on it). I have to take a driver safety test and was wondering if there is an easy way to take a fuse out or cut a wire to get it off.

Or the other option to put a piece of electrical tape over it, or maybe use a black sharpie pin? But will that make the driving inspector suspicious thinking I am covering up the check engine light?

Will they even care if I have warning lights going off during the drive test anyways?

A. I sort of doubt they will care about the security light being on. But if they see that it has been covered up they will certainly get suspicious. I don't think the security light has anything to do with the stereo not being stock. A GM dealership is the only place that has the equipment needed to diagnose and repair the problem.

Is it best to install security lights on their own switch, or not?
Q. I am having security lights- with a motion detector that trips the light for 20 seconds- installed on the outside of my home. Should I get the electrician to install them on a switch that I can turn on and off? Is there any reason I wouldn't put them on a switch, (it does cost more to wire that way). I just don't want to have to get it done later if it is best for them to be on a switch.

A. I recommend you put them on a switch, if you ever need them to stay on for an extended period of time you will be able to control them, if you get the proper security light.

The security light is on my 2001 buick regal LS wont start how do I fix this?
Q. I have a 2001 buick regal LS. I recently had to change the steering column out and now the care will not start. I am thinking its because the security light is on. Does anyone know how to reset the code to make the security light go off so the car will start? Or if maybe it could be something else?

A. Try this to reset the pass-lock security system.

This is free and all it takes is about 35 minutes of your time. If it doesn't work, all you are out is a little bit of your time.

First. make sure the battery is fully charged. If you have automatic headlights or daytime running lights disable them and it will help save your battery power. You should find instructions for this in your owner's manual. You could park the car in the sunlight which would not activate your head lights on most models.

Turn off all of the vehicle accessories. Roll down the windows. You roll down the windows just in case your doors lock while resetting your pass-lock security system.

Place the key in the ignition. Turn the key to the run position but don't start the engine. Don't use the accessories position as this will not work.

Leave the ignition in the on position for 10 minutes. At the 10 minute mark the security light will flash.

When the security light flashes turn the ignition off.

Wait a minute

Repeat these steps two more times. Do not start the engine or place the ignition in the accessories position or you will need to start over from the beginning.

After the third time of doing this your security system should be reset.

You say you changed the steering column. If this procedure does not work you may need to take the car to your nearest GM service department and get that "Great GM Feeling". If you did not install the original ignition switch with the new steering column it is very possible that the new ignition switch needs to be matched with the Pass Lock security system. This can only be done by a GM dealer because this process requires the use of a special scan tool connected to the diagnostic port. Most likely the only person that you will find with this scan tool is a GM dealer.

And no, the Pass Lock 2 security system can not be disabled. It is integrated into the car's computer systems and can not be bypassed or disabled.

Help with color scheme for living room/dining room combo room?

Q. I need help with picking the colors for the rugs, curtians, pictures and pillows.....Sadly the walls must stay white, but I have white leather furniture, a mahogony wood with a cherry colored stain shrunk. In the 2 curio cabinets in the shrunk I have crystal and Lladro porcelian figurines. My dining room furniture consists of a china cabinet and hutch and a dining table that seats 6 the wood is mahogony with a cherry stain. In my china cabinet I have diffrent sets of crystal glasses along with china. The pattern on the china is pink and red roses set on what looks like an opal color the way an opal kinda shines and has that translucent effect. However, I do not want to decorate in pink and red, the roses do not stand out enough to have to pick these colors.
The style of the wood pieces can best be described as british coloniel with a slightly updated touch to it. I hope that makes scence. Thanks for your help.
I hope I dont have to buy new as I just spent 8,000 on this new stuff.....

A. How about adding curtains/ area rugs in a golden wheat tone, the white of the furniture will play nicely off it, and you could add a few inexpensive accessories with your china to tie it all together. Amber hue'd wine glasses, sixties art glass in a golden tone. Fresh white or stargazer lilies in a vase will immediately make the rooms feel more modern, elegant & pulled together. Mixing less formal stoneware with your china, will help to make the china pattern a lovely accent. Also painting a large inexpensive canvas with an accent color is a great solution for adding color without painting a wall.

How do you determine the asking price for items you place in a garage sale?
Q. Specifically, I have a few larger ticket items, such as some nice living room/dining room furniture that I got from a decorator about 7 years ago. It was hardly used, but the sofa was about $1500 and I have a set of 4 matching upholstered parsons chairs that were about $1200.

Is it fair to label the sofa $20 and the set of 4 chairs for $20 and be willing to bargain down to $16 for each?

I have no idea, since I normally take goods and donate them.

A. Start higher, 200-300 and bargin down.

I want to change the finish of my dining room furniture. How can I do this?
Q. I have high gloss furniture in my dining room. I'd like to make it matte, or at least get rid of the high gloss. And of course, I'm looking for easiest (I have to do this myself) and cheapest way (I have very little to spend on this). Do I have to remove the high gloss varnish (if i did, could I just leave a little of the finish on it?) or can I just put some sort of clear matte finish on it?

A. my husband works for sherwin williams, and if you stop in a local store, they will answer any question you have. they will tell you exactly what to do, and what to buy.
hope this helped!
